My Movie
Character, Setting and Mood
This ADL project based on, In the Heat of the Night, helped me learn how the characters, setting and mood are developed within a novel. To learn about my character, I used the author’s description, paid attention to how my character acted in different situations, and how other characters described and interacted with my character. For my Avatar, I used the information I gathered and visualized what I thought the character would look like to choose his characteristics. To figure out the setting and time period of the story, I paid attention to how the author described the buildings, homes, surrounding areas, and characters’ clothing. In literature mood describes the emotion that the author wants the reader to feel. The mood of the movie my group created was serious since the novel dealt with discrimination and murder. Our group also recognized that there are some “celebratory” scenes in the book, for example when Harvey is released, and Virgil’s skills are recognized and accepted. Our group’s music choice reflected these ideas. In conclusion, I used the assignments in this project to further understand characters, settings, and moods within a given story.
Core Competency Reflection
- Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include each member’s strengths and interests, and difficulty of the task. In my group we each created an Avatar as that was something we enjoyed. We decided that each of us were going to do two setting pictures as that seemed manageable. As I don’t listen to music a lot,. someone else choose our background music for the video.
2.+3 If the group is not productive, I can encourage others (I said that Nick’s setting picture was really good), ask if anyone needs help (since Kaleb was away, I explained what we had done last class and asked if he needed help), ask others to do a specific thing (I asked Nick to think of one thing that happened to Harvey in the novel), remind others of what we need to be doing at the moment to get the assignment completed, and if all that fails ask for assistance from the teacher (I explained that I felt like I was doing most of the work to my teachers at the end of a period). This experience also helped me to learn how to respectfully advocate for my needs.
4. I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this project in order to complete my Avatar, choose images for my setting, By examining how the author described my character Harvey, looking at how my character reacted in different situations in the novel, and how other characters described and interacted with my character I formed my Avatar image. To find images for the setting I had to find details in the story, such as Wells was a small town, that Virgil was black and that the rest of the town was white. In addition to complete the voice over, I needed to find specific actions that my character did and infer what he might have said or thought.
