Core Competency Self-Assessment for Chem 12

I can work with others to achieve a goal.

I demonstrated working with others to achieve a common goal during this Chemistry 12 lab. In this lab we were in groups of two and the first step was to prepare different concentrations of Pb(NO3)2 and KI by diluting with water. It was important for me and my partner to work together and communicate as I was measuring out different amounts of water and pouring it into different amounts of PB(NO3)2 and KI that my partner prepared. If we didn’t communicate effectively this lab would have been difficult to be precise and make sure we we had the correct amounts of water in each test tubes to get an accurate result. Next we had to mix the test tubes with KI and Pb(NO3)2 together to make a solution and see what ones precipitated (as shown in the photo). Again communication was important to ensure we mixed the right solutions together. The last step we had to do was heat the test tubes up until the precipitate was fully dissolved. This step also involved teamwork, as I would watch the thermometer, while my partner was seeing when the precipitate dissolved. Overall I had to work in a group of two people to achieve a common goal in for this lab.

Drafting and Design 12 Self Assessment

I enjoyed designing this duplex in Autodesk Revit for Drafting and Design 12. I first researched some different styles of houses and floor plans to get some inspiration for my project and to decide what styles I liked and what styles I did not like as much. The next step was for me to take those ideas and come up with a floor plan that made sense for a duplex. Once I had the floorplan drawn in Revit, I had to make the roof. I found this step quite tricky to get the roof to the shape I wanted, as I did not want just a basic roof. I had to watch some additional tutorial videos to learn how to do a more complex roof by extrusion. Another challenge was adding millwork, fixtures, appliances, and furniture to the inside of my house. This was challenging because, unlike in Chief Architect, for Revit you have to download all the furniture and cabinets from the internet. This made it tricky to find Revit families that looked good beside each other, and it took a long time to have to download everything that I wanted to put in my house. Overall, I enjoyed this project, though I wish we had a bit more time on this project because I found it to be a bit of a time crunch.

Collaboration and Communication

In the Mini Lab on Friction I was able to demonstrate collaborating and communicating skills. In this lab we had to work together in a group of two to measure the force of friction on two different surfaces and use those measurements to calculate the coefficient of μ. We worked together to gather the data, one of us would measure how many newtons of force and the other person would record on to a sheet of paper. We also had to collaborate when writing in the lab. We worked together to do the calculations and then split up the other work between us. I also showed communication skills in this Lab, as it is important to clearly present your data and your results.

Drafting and Design 11 Self Assement.

I enjoyed designing my cabinet for several reasons. I explored a variety of cabinets online and in my house to get a sense of what design elements I liked and did not like.  Based on my research I decided on the style of my cabinet. The next step was figuring out the dimensions of my cabinet, which let me use my measurement skills.  I explored the different materials I could use including finishes, and colors and how each changed the look of my cabinet.  I definitely like a more modern look.

The hardest thing for me was to make the top and bottom parts of my cabinet work together. I really like the way the bottom of my cabinet looked but I had to play around with colour and design for the top half to make the cabinet look cohesive.  It was fun to explore features like adjustable shelves, glass, and hardware.  Each decision conveyed different design profiles, some I liked, others not so much.  Playing around with different patterns and materials for the countertop was interesting and I learned how to import different options beyond those that were in the program. I also used parametric measurements to efficiently make the different sized cabinets and drawers. I had some trouble getting it to snap and align to different components, but was able to figure it out.

Core Competency

I build on others’ ideas and add new ideas of my own or combine other people’s ideas in new ways to create new things or solve straight forward problems (Thinking)

I can build the skills I need to make Ideas work, and usually succeed, even if it takes a few tries (Thinking)

Core Competencies relating to the Podcast assignment.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Our group split the podcast into two hosts and one guest speaker which we worked together on deciding who would do what.  I thought about what my strengths and likes are (factual, detailed, using technology) and what the rest of my groups’ strengths and interests were (more conversationalists, listened to more podcasts, etc.) hence I became the guest speaker, and in charge of overseeing the revision of the podcast, while another group member was in charge of setting up mics, etc.
  • I collected information for each of the sections by going back into the novel and finding examples or quotes that I could share with my group to include in our outline.  I was able to ask questions about the others’ ideas so that we could clarify what was important.  I also showed that I was an active listener by nodding my head, and saying things like, “good idea”, or “I see what you mean”.
  • It was difficult to find a time outside of class when the group was available to work on and record the podcast.  I made sure that I was flexible when I could meet, and was prepared with my ideas so that we could be ready to go.  If someone, needed help I would help them.

Critical and Reflective Thinking and Creative Thinking

  • When reading this novel, I was able to connect some of the main character’s personality to my own.  We both like routine, clear instructions, logic, order, math, and science.
  • I knew someone in a class who had “Autism”.  I am able to better understand his actions and thinking now.
  • I am not strong at creative tasks like podcasts. I only listen to one podcast and that is about technology.  I took a risk in doing this type of project. A strategy I used with this task was to get the facts, and then go back and see if I could talk about it and add a word or line to make it more humorous or interesting.

Core Competency Reflection Wood 10

In woodworking I learned how to use fusion 360. I used fusion to design a engraving to put on my cutting board. I had to measure my board and draw it on fusion, and if my board was not the exact size it would not cut properly on the CNC router. If I were to do this again I would set the height to 0.03 instead of 0.04, so it does not cut so deep.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCE REFLECTION

Fall concert

Circular Competency Reflection

Some of the musical skills I have shown in this experience are sight reading, and colaborating to make the song sound good. Another skill I have shown is being able to play on stage without being distacted with the audience. I would like to improve on my drumming skills, by trying some more challenging songs. I plan to continue with Concert and Jazz band next year, and audition for the small ensemble concert.

Core Competency Reflection

During this project, I used my collaboration skills in working with the other people in the perccussion section. We had to coordinate with each other to make sure we were in time with each other, playing at the same tempo, and helping each other if we were unsure. We practiced specific parts that were “troublesome”.

Core Compentency Goals

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I like to do physical activities. My goal is to do more
exercise this semester to help relief my stress and boost my mood. This will include participating in all PE classes and making sure that I get outside at lunch hour to do some exercise — even if it just a walk around the school. I find that exercise relaxes me and helps me focus on school work.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see everyone is participating equally. I will
make sure everyone is included and participating in group projects I am working on. When everyone participates in a group project we often end up with a better result because everyone has contributed their strengths.

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is woodworking. I will become more proficient in woodworking. I want to learn more advanced woodworking techniques and how to use more of the woodworking tools. I like to further my knowledge in woodworking as I find it very interesting and fun to do.

Core Competency Reflection

I am good at parkour, which requires agility, and precision. Another thing i am good at is building, which requires problem solving and math skills.

I really liked designing a house, on Chief Architect, in Drafting Design and Animation 9. it was special because it was a program I would not normally use and I got to be creative in a logical and mathematical way. I am also really proud of my Mach-E sign I made in woodworking because it was hands-on and I designed it on a computer.

My family does a lot together, whether it is doing something physical, building inside with Lego or playing a board game. I am encouraged to take part in the activities I enjoy (parkour, ropes courses, etc.) by myself or with friends. My friends have the same values as me. My family set a positive example to be kind, respectful and hardworking.

Before making decisions, I “think, before I do”. I think whether the choice I make will be good for me (or others) and reflect my values. If I am not sure what to do, I ask my parents opinion.

The things that make me unique are: my sense of humour, my agility to do parkour, and my creative thinking shown thourgh Lego modles.
