French 10 Skit

This is a just one of many props we had for our Chapter 6 script

My friends and I had to create a script from everything we learned in Chapter 6. We faced a couple challenges since we had to present it a day earlier than everyone else. This left us very stressed and unprepared. Luckily we used our core competency skills to finish our script in time. Some examples of communication skills that I used were communicating clearly and purposefully. I also listened to every ones ideas and tried using different perspectives to see how it could work. Overall I’m really proud of how quickly and thoroughly we were abt to finish our script.

Creative Writing 10

My Writing

This is a free verse poem I wrote using metaphors about my grandma.

Core Competency Reflection

This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences: I think using the metaphor of a lion to describe my grandma really helps everyone understand what impact I wanted to create. Most people of different backgrounds have some knowledge about lions so it was easy for me to communicate my feelings. I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by… Since this was a free verse poem I had to try many different options of how I wanted my poem to look. I used critical thinking to decide what way the line breaks worked the best. When it seems the good ideas just won’t come to me, I …. to help calm myself or create space in my mind to… I was stuck quite a bit on what metaphor to use for my grandma and I was a little stressed since I had no ideas. But I actually called my grandma just to talk to her and really notice what type of vibe she has. I also talked to my cousin and we came up with the idea of a lion, so talking to my family really helped me come up with creative ideas.

One goal that I’m working on is boosting my mood or re-focusing. A lot of the times I get frustrated when working because my ideas just aren’t working and I notice the quality of my work also decreases. So I’ve been working on it by taking breaks when I feel stuck and coming back with a fresh mind. I hope by the end of the school year I have gotten into a habit of letting myself take breaks when necessary.

CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

“Are You Ready to Do CPR?” Verywell Health, https://www.verywellhealth.com/how-to-do-cpr-1298446. Accessed 7 Dec. 2022.

CPR Reflection

Something new that I learned this unit that I hadn’t considered before was using an AED. I had always seen them used in movies but I didn’t know I could use one myself to help save someone’s life. I also didn’t know exactly know how an AED works but this unit thought me how they send a shock wave through the body to jump start the heart. A key takeaway from this unit is learning the signs of a heart attack and stroke. I will make sure to always look out for the five P’s of a heart attack and to recognize FAST for a stroke. The CPR unit connects to the nutrition unit because during the CPR unit we learned that having a unhealthy diet can cause a heart attack, whether it’s from high cholesterol, diabetes, or obesity. During the nutrition unit we learned how to have a balanced diet that will allow us to live a long healthy life.

Core Competency Reflection

I can describe how learning about CPR relates to my life because both of my grandpas have had heart attacks and are at high risk. So knowing CPR could potentially help me save them incase they have another heart attack. Examples of where I communicated clearly and purposefully can be seen in lessons when I participated with any information that I already knew about CPR from before this unit. I appreciated feedback on my CPR knowledge and skills when it came in the form of helping improve my technique. I want to know if I need to go deeper or faster because in real life I need to have proper technique for CPR to work.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical Thinking

Button Classification Assignment

At the beginning of the year my Life Science 11 class did this activity to practice classifying with buttons. I worked with my partner Alethea, together we had to sort the buttons into different species and give them scientific names. We had to use critical thinking because we needed an understanding what to eliminate and what goes together, like a puzzle. I definitely improved in noticing smaller details to make my decisions and this improved my overall critical thinking skills. Alethea and I had many different ideas so I was able to realize that different people have different ways of sorting things when it comes to priority. Overall this assignment really turned on my critical thinking for the rest of the year and helped me understand what taxonomists do in their job.

Core Competency Goals

I plan to show I am actively listening ~

Although I may think I’m listening to the teacher or speaker I tend to notice my body is not. I’m going to work on my body language to show I am giving my full attention. I will put my phone away so I won’t get distracted and sit so I’m completely facing the speaker. I hope I can achieve this goal and turn it into a habit that I don’t have to think about.

I need to give myself more time to study ~

I am not very personally responsible when it comes to time after school. I like to leave homework, assignments, and studying last minute. This has caused me a lot of difficulties in the past. So if I can try to give myself more time to do school work rather then going on my phone I know that’ll benefit me a lot.

I will improve my focus during tests ~

I never do bad on tests but that’s only because I double check. When I finish a test I always go through it again. If I don’t I’ll probably get multiple questions wrong for silly mistakes. It bugs me that I even make these mistakes because they’re so small they shouldn’t happen in the first place. Maybe it’s because I’m nervous and lose my attention to detail. I really think if I put more time into each question to make sure everything is right I will see improvements when I go back to double check.

My Artifact

Hunger Games Mutation Project

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Create and Communicate: While doing this assignment we had to present our project to the class. This made me work on my speaking skills. When we had to draw a photo of our mutated animal I used my representation skills to show what we imagined. We also made a PowerPoint to explain our idea in more depth. This helped me grow a lot in those areas.

Core Competencies Reflection

Creative Thinking: I definitely grew during this project because I had to use creative thinking a lot. To come up with new ideas of mixed animals with pros and cons helped me improve my creative thinking. I am very proud of this project because it really shows our creativity and design.

Ma famille

A Page from “Ma famille” French Project

For my final project in French I chose to make a book describing all my family members. The photo above is just one of the pages. I used my creative thinking skills to come up with sentences to write about each person. I also had to use creative thinking to think of ways to decorate it. I think I have improved a lot this semester. I can write full sentences on my own now. I can also carry a basic conversation and have learned lots of new grammar points. I also enjoy listening to French music. One artist I like is Indila. I think this project has really reflected all the hard work work I’ve done in French this semester.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Collaborating

This is a photo of the Rube Goldberg Machine that Nikta, Natalya, and I created.

Collaborating is something my group did a lot. The goal of our machine was to break the fortune cookie. We had some troubles trying to figure out how to do that. Because of our problem we had to collaborate very much and it thought me some new things. We FaceTimed each other to try to experiment at home as to how we would build it at school. I definitely learned the importance of collaborating and communication in general. When any of us had ideas we would build off of it and create an even better idea all together. I think the success of our project really showed that. I think
I would still like to continue in being more patient with my group. I have always had trouble trying to understand other perspectives but doing collaborative things like this has really helped me improve on myself. Overall I am very proud of what we accomplished with each others help and collaboration.

My Project

Public Speaking

I have learned a lot about public speaking this semester. Being a good speaker means having lots of eye contact with the audience, speaking loud and confidently, having a nice pace when speaking, and having the speech memorized or prepared. From what I have learned a good speech has a thoughtful hook at the beginning that keeps the audience interested, all the information is in an order that makes sense, and the topic is something the audience can relate to or be interested in. A good audience member listens actively to the speaker by making eye contact and facing them. They also don’t go on their phones or get distracted by other things. They clap at the end of the speech if appropriate and don’t talk during it.

Collaborating Core Competency Reflection

Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include noticing who has strengths in what areas. When we were splitting up the work I knew Nikta has better drawing skills than me so she drew the Skeleon but I coloured it and we divided everything else up by who had more strengths in that area.. I show that I value feedback from others in my group by asking them to read what I wrote and change anything that they think would sound better. I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see us working quickly and our group members talking about how proud they are of all the work being done. When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I get to know them better and ask them what part of the project they would want to work on. One goal I have for myself is working on being a better public speaker. I noticed I need to work more on eye contact and slowing down when speaking. I will achieve my goal by getting over my nerves of speaking publicly which would help me focus more on eye contact and pacing.
