Food Studies Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication and Collaboration skills

This lab wasn’t very easy, we had several recipes to prepare so I think it’s an excellent example of how important communication and collaboration is in the kitchen. My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include stopping to talk for a few minutes before starting the lab so that everyone knows what their role is and there will be no future problems. Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen from the fact that I have worked with raw meat and I believe there is a need for a high level of communication, both because I handled a knife which can be very dangerous but also because there was a great risk of contamination. This is why I was very careful when talking to my groupmates, to make sure we were all safe. I think I can work with others to achieve a goal and you can just look at how well this recipe came out, we all did what was expected of us, respecting the time we were given. I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group and I show that I value feedback from others in my group by not being too stubborn and understanding when someone else’s idea is better and more functional, to be able to work in a group is very important include everyone and understand when you’re wrong!
