CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

How to Perform CPR: Guidelines, Procedure, and Ratio. 10 June 2020, https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324712.

CPR Reflection

  1. What was something you learned that you didn’t know or consider before?

I learned the proper order of steps in how to perform CPR- and not only that- but I also learned what comes before and after, which would be the recognition of the need for CPR and how to help afterwards (assisting EMS and letting them know what happened).

  1. What is a key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit?

A key takeaway for me was symptoms to recognize. It could be dangerous to do CPR when it is not necessary (you likely will break their ribs) but now I know how to identify when someone might require it (no pulse, unconscious, not breathing, the 5 P’s, etc) which I didn’t know how to before.

  1. How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously?

This unit connects to nutrition because we learned that several health risks and factors for someone to have a heart attack/stroke comes from a poor diet, which we learned all about in our nutrition unit (how to eat properly to stay healthy).

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicated clearly and purposefully can be seen in…

When performing the CPR live assessment, I was vocal and loud when communicating what I needed from others (‘Call 911! Get an AED!’). I clearly stated my steps out loud to be straightforward and focused. For example, I counted chest compressions, talked the victim through the process, and was firm when giving directions to myself and others.

One lesson that stimulated my thinking about the importance of CPR was…

During the CPR live assessment, I realized that this wasn’t just for others. People in my family could go into cardiac arrest, in which I would be knowledgeable to save them. This realization is scary but made me realize how important it is to have the life saving knowledge and skills to potentially save someone’s life… or my own family’s life.

In this unit, I am proud that I accomplished …. By ….

In this unit, I am proud to have done well on the live assessment and that I have a clear and thorough understanding of CPR. I am proud to have accomplished successful completion of this course and now the ability to save other’s lives if necessary. For me, this is an important achievement and an essential skill to have because it could literally mean life and death.

Core Competency Self-Reflection- Leadership

Critical and Reflective Thinking

A leadership quality I possess would be my organizational abilities. I am good at managing my time wisely and distributing jobs to group members to effectively execute the task at hand. It helps me to not only lead and assist others in a collaborative environment, but also to schedule my own life in a way that allows me to get everything done. For example, almost daily I make to-do lists for myself to stick to so that I can be more efficient.

A leadership skill that I possess would be communication. I demonstrate this by collaborating with other members in a group and presenting my ideas clearly. I can give instructions and tasks to others to complete the task efficiently, and I can do so in an encouraging way. In addition to this, I am good at updating and touching base with others. For example, to remind people of an upcoming event or if I need clarification (really anything to make the collaboration process smoother), I often will send out an email or text to stay in touch with group members.

By the end of this course, a leadership quality I’d like to possess would be demonstration of flexibility. Often, I strongly prefer to have a set schedule that I can follow, mainly because that ties into my organizational quality. It is easier for me to just know what we’re doing and stick to that. I think it would be beneficial for me as a leader to be able to adapt a little more and let go of control when needed. I should also accept that even though my idea may be the best one in my view, it is sometimes necessary to be open to new ideas. If I can achieve a more open point of view, then it will be a positive thing for my leadership journey.

A leadership skill I hope to obtain would be delegation. Not so much in the sense of carrying out the act of delegating tasks to group members, but rather the trust within that itself. What I mean by this is trusting other group members to follow through. I like to be in control and take care of things myself, that way it is a guarantee that things get done. I would love to improve in this category so that the collaborative process of ideas, work and progress lets me let go of some responsibility, which shows my compatibility and trust with others. Overall, I want to improve my delegation, trust, and collaboration skills.

I can encourage others to share their voice and value diverse perspectives…

I can encourage others to share their voice by being a reliable and respectful group member. For me, when someone is supportive and kind to me that motivates me to share more of my ideas in-depth or share things that maybe I wouldn’t before. If I can channel that as a leader, it will cause others to want to share their perspective a little bit more. I think my ability to encourage and uplift others is good, but there is always room for improvement. This year in leadership, I can keep this in mind when meeting others and encouraging them to share their thoughts/opinions in order to grow and improve.

Positive Social Media

Positive Social Media Posts

Reflection

CC: “Identify risks and appreciate benefits associated with personal and public digital footprints”

With every post, there are many up-sides as well as drawbacks. Some would include that if you have a public account, your social media posts/history is there for everyone to see- possible employers, schools, your peers… if your posts are something you wouldn’t want those people to see, then you shouldn’t be posting it. That would be the biggest risk when it comes to a more public digital footprint. But there are upsides, too. If you do something positive- for example, volunteering- then people/employers will see that and likely think better of you. The opposite applies for a public account- no one can see your positive impact, therefore that can be a downside of a personal digital footprint.

Core Competency Reflection

“I can work to inform myself about issues surrounding me.”

With this post (which isn’t the actual post, but I did post about this specific volunteering event), I demonstrated the prompt above by helping out in my community. Hazel Trembath needed welcoming into the community after a devastating fire, and I banded together with leadership and went to help. It was a big issue for them and I wanted to be involved, which is what this post conveys in a positive way.

“I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself.”

I demonstrated this by making the post itself. I was proud of my volunteer work and the rest of leadership for coming together to help, so the post was the product of taking pride in helping out the community.

“I can represent my learning and tell how it connects to my experiences.”

In this post, the way I represented my learning was through the caption and image. The post connected to my experience of helping the community, and it was represented through a post designed to have a positive impact that supported and spread awareness throughout the community.

“I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share.”

This post demonstrates this competency in the sense of responsibility. This post shows future employers/schools that I am responsible and willing to do my part in a group, and possibly go above and beyond by volunteering my time.

My Goal Moving Forward

“I can give, receive and act on feedback to progress in my goals.”

When I have my mind set on something, it can be hard to wrap my head around changing the way I get there or the goal itself. It’s like my heart is set on it. What I want to do to get around this is be better at accepting criticism and feedback from others. I think that if I can adapt to this, I will make better and more progress towards my goals in life. I will do this by trying my best to be open to others ideas and thoughts, while still considering my own to overall help me successfully reach my goals.

Desmos Polygraph Activity

Core Competency Reflection

“I can identify my strengths and limits, find internal motivation, and act on opportunities for self-growth.”

In this assignment, I found my motivation by wanting to expand my knowledge about graphs in preparation for the unit test. I found it helpful to ask for help with my polygraph vocabulary so I could bring a deeper understanding to what I was talking about.

Reflecting on My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

This year I learned that my actions/decisions have an impact. I discovered this by working hard; which resulted in good grades. I gained new study habits to help me adapt to high school, which was a big change. I’ve learned in-depth and expanded my knowledge in my subjects/electives- Part of this included asking for help. As I’ve learned, that has an impact because you get a better understanding of what you’re doing: clarifying what I need to do has supported me through my learning and I certainly can see results from that. Not only this, but when I found strategies that helped me work on projects and prepare for tests, it showed that I’ve grown academically and that hard work pays off. Overall, I’ve significantly grown in my subjects in both semesters and worked hard to see results.

My Favourite Website

https://www.canva.com/

This website, Canva, I feel supported my learning by being a source where I can combine my assignments with my ideas. It assisted me with the math ADL project by being a website where I could lay out my graphs in an aesthetically pleasing format. It also was a big help in my English class, where I did my Characterization of Me project and it was perfectly suited for me because I could take lots of creative license!

Favourite Video

I chose this video because it really got me thinking about how my decisions could affect my school year. It made me realize that if I put in the effort I could make myself proud and bring my grades where I want them to be. It’s hopeful how it is suggested that you have the power to change your life at any point, as said in this video.

My Favourite Image

This image is the 2023 Student Leadership Council flyer for this years’ wrap-up conference. I specifically wanted to focus on the Who Are You? part of this picture with the silhouette and the question mark, because that was the big theme. This year I have participated in every meeting and been an active (and the only person from Centennial) member of SLC, which is why it is one of the things that stands out in my grade 9 year.

My Favourite Quote

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.”

-Abraham Lincoln

I chose this quote because I felt that I thought along those lines this year when it came to my study habits. Relating to the video above, I knew I could make it happen but that to do that I would need to work hard. This quote literally is telling you to create your future, and I demonstrated it through asking questions, studying, and quality work so that I could see results and know my actions were/are paying off.

ADL- Financial Literacy

Data and Solutions:

3 Year GIC

Year 1- $80,000 x 1.042 = $83,360 (4.2% increase)

Year 2- $83,360 x 1.042 = $86,861.12

Year 3- $86,861.12 x 1.042 = $90,509.287

Savings- $30,000

$90509.287 + $30,000= $120,509.287

Total: $120,509.287

2) Visual Representation

I used Exel to make the first bar graph. The second graph is a template from Canva, which I modified to make it more personal and aesthetically pleasing. I find that it makes for a better presentation when there is a colour scheme, so that is why I made 2.

3) Justification

This method of making your money grow has its ups and downs. Some strengths are the fact that you have a solid outcome; a guarantee that you will make money. In the stock market, you don’t get this same confirmation. This is good and bad, because locking your money into a non-redeemable GIC means it’s secure, but that also means that you can’t access it at any time. If you find yourself in a situation where you need money, you can’t get it until the GIC matures. These are the main points of risk, which is okay if you know you’ll manage without this amount of money. I think the stock market is also a good way to invest your funds, but there is the factor of chance. That’s why a GIC is helpful; you know full well you are getting money back.

4) Collaboration and Contributions

1. How did you find working with your group?

If I understand the concept, sometimes I prefer to work alone. However, I see lots of benefits when working with a group because we can work through problems together, since you experiment with methods that work and make sense to you, assisted by others. Essentially, we help each other!

2. How did you contribute to the group? And how did others in the group contribute to your learning?

I contributed to the group by writing out (most of) the mathematical equations and then we worked together to solve the question. We came together to fix the problem when we were doing an equation wrong, and understood what we did to work past it. Then we were able to get specific answers that were relevant to this project, and I would say that that is a success.

3. Did you use any other the solutions proposed by your group? Why or why not?

We were all on the same page for this, so I would say that our solution methods were all the same.

4. How would you rate your ability to collaborate with others in your group on a scale of 1-4 (1 not good; 4- excellent)

I would rate myself in the range of a 4. I would say that I’m a leader, and I like to get things done, so I try to help others or learn from others so that we collaborate smoothly. Once in a while I prefer to work alone, if a group isn’t necessary, but mostly I think it’s valuable to work with others since you get to hear other ideas and reflect on thinking processes.

5) Core Competency Reflections

  1. I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.

I demonstrated this when we were writing out the equations. I wrote them out in a clear and simple way so that they would be easy to translate into data, information, the final solution and a bar graph. Organizing the steps we took made it easy to see our thinking process, so I think that was helpful.

2) If I notice …, that’s a sign that my group needs help and we can get support by…

If I notice something wrong in the math calculations, I get help from a teacher. My group and I were stumped during one part of the question, and we realized something was wrong. We got some clarification from a teacher on what we needed to do, and that was all it took for us to get back on the right track. When it comes to subjects that are difficult to me (one of them being math) I find that it pays off to double-check you know what you’re doing, or if you don’t, asking for help.

3) I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

If I think something is off in the math process (e.g. a flaw in the calculations, something looking off in the data, etc.) I go through the problem again or ask for an outside insight. In my bar graph, I realized something looked off and had to go back through and fix my numbers. If I hadn’t noticed this, then it would have been incorrect.

4) My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

When we did the disadvantages/advantages about stocks, GICs, and saving accounts, I used some past information I had to add some personal thoughts to the assignment. It’s helpful when you have some experience with the matter at hand because then you know a little more about what you’re talking about. Specifically, I knew some stuff already about stocks since my family taught me about them. Other strategies I use are connecting with others or searching it up online from a trusted source.

French Skit Reflection

The Skit Process

For this French skit, my two group members and I started by putting together an idea of what we wanted to present. Since we already knew the concept would be a cafe, and the rest would be standard cafe stuff (ordering, paying, comments on food) we wanted to spice it up a bit so that it would be different from the others. That is why we added in an arguing couple to make it interesting for the audience, because we thought that would be funny and a little out-of-the-box. My role in our project was writing the script and translating it. This would be a demonstration of the core competency “I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share.” I think for me, I showed this by bringing most of the props, dressing the role of my character, and writing the script. Something I could improve on would actually be the same core competency. While I did my share, I felt like I did more work than was entitled to me. Next time, we could improve on even distribution of roles and work on communication, so that it comes together a little smoother next time.

Overall, I learned more about small talk in French and using the verb ‘aller.’ My group and I learned how we work together and collaborate, and I think that I can conclude it as a success.

English 9 Final Reflection

Artifact: My Identity Poem

Sound devices/figurative language used:

  • Rhyme
  • Alliteration
  • Onomatopoeia
  • Simile
  • Hyperbole
  • Metaphor

Annaliesa is my name,

Part of my identity.

That and a whole lot more make me who I am and want to be. (rhyme)

I’ve got blonde hair, a brace face

Eyes that shift between blue and green

I love to work with clay, as well as sew while watching tv

It is my artist’s medium.

I enjoy thrifting, shopping second-hand

From their closet to mine

I have a lot of thoughts and opinions

And not a whole lot of free time

I fill my calendar with sports and such,

Busy as a bee (simile)

I buzz around and try to please those I know best, (Onomatopoeia)

Then read and try to get some rest (rhyme)

My hands play piano and fill the margins of my page with sketches

Maybe my drawings reflect my life? (Metaphor)

It’s fun to be creative, personally I love to write

Fingers clicking at the keyboard day and night (Hyperbole and rhyme)

I want to publish a book one day

A splendid story that I can simply call mine. (Alliteration)

All my interests

Abilities

And what I do with my time

Make up my identity

And that, I find sublime. (rhyme)

This poem circling around my identity was a project that stuck out to me, because I enjoyed it but also got to use things we’ve been learning in class to bring it all together.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

During this project, I developed my writing skills specifically using sound devices and figurative language. Unlike and poetry unit I’ve done before, we got full creative license to use the sound devices and figurative language in our own, original free verse poem. To me, was more engaging than doing a bunch of other poems, like haiku’s, limericks, sonnets, etc. That way, we got to do less build-up and more writing, which was very enjoyable for me.

Thinking- Core Competency Reflection

“I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas.”

I showed the core competency above when I was writing my identity poem. The process I used was a brainstorm page to spill my ideas for the poem onto the page, then used them to craft a rough draft of my poem. This was the method I used to develop my poem, ideas, and aspects of my identity before then combining them into one. Some challenges I had while writing this poem were being able to incorporate all of the required sound devices/figurative language. A few of them just didn’t blend into the poem like I wanted them to, and so I changed a few lines up and played around with how it sounded out loud to make it exactly how I wanted it. That is how I used perseverance to work around setbacks to ripen and curate this poem to my taste. Next time, I might try planning out how I want to use the poetic devices instead of doing them as I went along with the writing process. Building on top of my ideas worked for me, but maybe next time I will think more of the structure in the poem beforehand.
