“My cultural background/upbringing contributes to who I am as a artist in that…”
This competency accurately represents my expression of identity in this piece. I incorporated aspects of my childhood (‘upbringing’) and my favourite memories as well as my hobbies in order to create this reflection of myself. It is very much focused on the idea of maximalism, which is seen through the colours, textures, and personal connections. To make this, I emphasized my background and upbringing to make it more unique. The flags at the top show my family’s orgins, the patchwork represents my love of sewing, and the trees with the kids symbolize my sister and I when we were little. These are all scraps of me put together to create this piece of my identity.
I think My Career Report is my best work for a number of reasons. Firstly, I completed it as in-depth as I could, considering angles such as what I want to pursue, my personal thoughts, opinions, and experiences, as well as schools that interested me. This project gave me a look into the paths I could take based off of what I wanted to pursue post-secondary. During this project, I was met with several obstacles such as not getting enough information or not being able to find accurate information on a course/school. I got past this by working extra outside of school and getting an extension so I could do my best and most thorough work. Overall, I’m really happy with how this report came together.
My Takeaways
My few biggest takeaways from CLE 10 would have to be the skills to navigate post-secondary options, knowing where to access resources to find information, and making connections that could help me in the future (e.g. with my career). There are so many things that helped me gain an understanding of my options, which is a really valuable takeaway for me because I think a lot about what I want to do post-secondary, with my career, and in life. Some of the most helpful assignments for me would be my Career Report, my resume, the career interview, and the mock interview. In the future, I know I am able to review and seek assistance from teachers and family members to help me make decisions about the future, and that is a really valuable takeaway for me.
Core Competency Reflection
“I can reflect on my strengths and identify my potential as a leaders in my community”
There are several ways in which my learning resonated with this statement. For one thing, we made a point of always reflecting on our learning in this class, and I was able to reflect on my strengths through goal-setting and personal reflection. I showed some leadership in this course and tried my best in all of my work. I demonstrated deep thinking and tried to go above and beyond in all assignments/projects. In this course, I am proud how much effort I put into my learning and I think that reflected in my work and grades.
A leadership quality I possess would be my organizational abilities. I am good at managing my time wisely and distributing jobs to group members to effectively execute the task at hand. It helps me to not only lead and assist others in a collaborative environment, but also to schedule my own life in a way that allows me to get everything done. For example, almost daily I make to-do lists for myself to stick to so that I can be more efficient.
A leadership skill that I possess would be communication. I demonstrate this by collaborating with other members in a group and presenting my ideas clearly. I can give instructions and tasks to others to complete the task efficiently, and I can do so in an encouraging way. In addition to this, I am good at updating and touching base with others. For example, to remind people of an upcoming event or if I need clarification (really anything to make the collaboration process smoother), I often will send out an email or text to stay in touch with group members.
By the end of this course, a leadership quality I’d like to possess would be demonstration of flexibility. Often, I strongly prefer to have a set schedule that I can follow, mainly because that ties into my organizational quality. It is easier for me to just know what we’re doing and stick to that. I think it would be beneficial for me as a leader to be able to adapt a little more and let go of control when needed. I should also accept that even though my idea may be the best one in my view, it is sometimes necessary to be open to new ideas. If I can achieve a more open point of view, then it will be a positive thing for my leadership journey.
A leadership skill I hope to obtain would be delegation. Not so much in the sense of carrying out the act of delegating tasks to group members, but rather the trust within that itself. What I mean by this is trusting other group members to follow through. I like to be in control and take care of things myself, that way it is a guarantee that things get done. I would love to improve in this category so that the collaborative process of ideas, work and progress lets me let go of some responsibility, which shows my compatibility and trust with others. Overall, I want to improve my delegation, trust, and collaboration skills.
I can encourage others to share their voice and value diverse perspectives…
I can encourage others to share their voice by being a reliable and respectful group member. For me, when someone is supportive and kind to me that motivates me to share more of my ideas in-depth or share things that maybe I wouldn’t before. If I can channel that as a leader, it will cause others to want to share their perspective a little bit more. I think my ability to encourage and uplift others is good, but there is always room for improvement. This year in leadership, I can keep this in mind when meeting others and encouraging them to share their thoughts/opinions in order to grow and improve.
I used Exel to make the first bar graph. The second graph is a template from Canva, which I modified to make it more personal and aesthetically pleasing. I find that it makes for a better presentation when there is a colour scheme, so that is why I made 2.
3) Justification
This method of making your money grow has its ups and downs. Some strengths are the fact that you have a solid outcome; a guarantee that you will make money. In the stock market, you don’t get this same confirmation. This is good and bad, because locking your money into a non-redeemable GIC means it’s secure, but that also means that you can’t access it at any time. If you find yourself in a situation where you need money, you can’t get it until the GIC matures. These are the main points of risk, which is okay if you know you’ll manage without this amount of money. I think the stock market is also a good way to invest your funds, but there is the factor of chance. That’s why a GIC is helpful; you know full well you are getting money back.
4) Collaboration and Contributions
1. How did you find working with your group?
If I understand the concept, sometimes I prefer to work alone. However, I see lots of benefits when working with a group because we can work through problems together, since you experiment with methods that work and make sense to you, assisted by others. Essentially, we help each other!
2. How did you contribute to the group? And how did others in the group contribute to your learning?
I contributed to the group by writing out (most of) the mathematical equations and then we worked together to solve the question. We came together to fix the problem when we were doing an equation wrong, and understood what we did to work past it. Then we were able to get specific answers that were relevant to this project, and I would say that that is a success.
3. Did you use any other the solutions proposed by your group? Why or why not?
We were all on the same page for this, so I would say that our solution methods were all the same.
4. How would you rate your ability to collaborate with others in your group on a scale of 1-4 (1 not good; 4- excellent)
I would rate myself in the range of a 4. I would say that I’m a leader, and I like to get things done, so I try to help others or learn from others so that we collaborate smoothly. Once in a while I prefer to work alone, if a group isn’t necessary, but mostly I think it’s valuable to work with others since you get to hear other ideas and reflect on thinking processes.
5) Core Competency Reflections
I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.
I demonstrated this when we were writing out the equations. I wrote them out in a clear and simple way so that they would be easy to translate into data, information, the final solution and a bar graph. Organizing the steps we took made it easy to see our thinking process, so I think that was helpful.
2) If I notice …, that’s a sign that my group needs help and we can get support by…
If I notice something wrong in the math calculations, I get help from a teacher. My group and I were stumped during one part of the question, and we realized something was wrong. We got some clarification from a teacher on what we needed to do, and that was all it took for us to get back on the right track. When it comes to subjects that are difficult to me (one of them being math) I find that it pays off to double-check you know what you’re doing, or if you don’t, asking for help.
3) I can analyze evidence to make judgements.
If I think something is off in the math process (e.g. a flaw in the calculations, something looking off in the data, etc.) I go through the problem again or ask for an outside insight. In my bar graph, I realized something looked off and had to go back through and fix my numbers. If I hadn’t noticed this, then it would have been incorrect.
4) My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…
When we did the disadvantages/advantages about stocks, GICs, and saving accounts, I used some past information I had to add some personal thoughts to the assignment. It’s helpful when you have some experience with the matter at hand because then you know a little more about what you’re talking about. Specifically, I knew some stuff already about stocks since my family taught me about them. Other strategies I use are connecting with others or searching it up online from a trusted source.
