Titration lab

competency explanation

Titration is a lab technique used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution by gradually adding a solution of known concentration until a reaction occurs, often indicated by a color change. In this lab, we used titration to figure out the concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl) by adding sodium hydroxide (NaOH). We set up a burette with NaOH and a flask with HCl and phenolphthalein. The goal was to find out how much NaOH we needed to add to completely react with the acid. The endpoint of the titration was reached when the solution turned a very faint pink that lasted for about 30 seconds. We knew we were close to the endpoint when the pink color didn’t disappear quickly. To avoid adding too much NaOH, we used half drops near the endpoint. If we added too much, the solution turned very pink. In our first test trial, we used 14.15mL of NaOH, starting with 2.56mL, we ended with a light pink shade, so we adjusted in the second trial. We used slower half drops and reached a better endpoint at 13.41 mL. In the third trial, we got 13.63mL, but the trials didnt agree within a +- 0.1 mL with each other. After adjusting, we got a better result with the right color on trial 4, 13.76mL and an average of 0.137M +- 1.7%.

core competency reflection

In this lab, I used communication and critical thinking skills. I worked closely with my partner and talked to my peers to make sure we were doing things correctly. I also asked a few questions to the teacher whenever i was unsure if our results were correct. I used critical thinking by looking at the data we collected and using it to draw conclusions. For example, after seeing the results from the first trial, and properly knowing how to do full/half drops I knew that for the second and third trials, we could pour 10.00 mL of NaOH into the HCl without worrying about the solution turning dark or having a misreading.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

When collecting relevant information for a specific task, it’s essential to first define clear objectives. This means understanding the purpose of the task and identifying the key questions you need to answer. Like for all of our assignments around watching a video or an article, I’m able to identify the key idea. Next, it’s important to identify reliable sources. Sources, such as books from the library, videos provided by the teacher , or original research, provide direct insight into your task. Finally, formatting your work in an organized matter. Organizing work may seem like a tedious task but it helps me organize all my work into information that is readable for myself or the teacher. Doing these strategies ensure to get amazing information for assignments.

If there is a disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to encourage open communication and active listening. It’s important to create an environment where everyone feels heard and understood, even if our opinions aren’t all the same . I would start by asking each person to express their perspective clearly so we can fully understand their perspective. I also find it helpful to find a common ground. Finding a common ground in group work assists with projects or in class discussions, I make sure that everyone’s voices are heard in the answer. When we don’t talk much, I try to keep the conversation focused on the task at hand, or initiate the conversation. I also encourage brainstorming potential solutions together, rather than everyone having a different answer.

One goal I have for myself is to…

Focus on my critical and reflective thinking core competency . To achieve this goal I will ask others to read over my work to make sure I’m doing the correct thing. I can also reach this goal by expanding my knowledge by researching through books and online sources. If I do all these things I’ll be able to reach my goal by the end of the semester.

Core competency goals

Some of the things I plan to do to stay mentally and physically healthy include… creating time for myself away from anything stressful. That may be taking a walk around the neighbourhood or just having a pair of headphones and listening to my favourite music.

Some of the ways I plan to work to build and maintain relationships is by… spending quality time with my peers. During group work, I will go out of my way to make a conversation with them to create a stronger bond.

Goal 1

My goals for this year is to maintain a high gpa. This will be through having enough sleep at least 8 hours and to eat balanced meals so my brain is capable of all these new information. Another way I could do this is to spend more time preparing for my tests and to write more notes.

Goal 2

My second goal will be to ask for help whenever i need. I will ask more questions with the teachers to fully understand.

Persuasion and Advertisement Unit Reflection

The hunger games project is a presentation that allows us to show our creativity in a way of persuasion. It is a visual project that can be in the form of a brochure, power point, or a poster. This was assigned to us to show our ways of advertising a make believe project to our peers.

it’s important to remember because it gives you a base in who your trying to persuade. It gives the viewer a brief description for who you’re trying to sell it to, and helps them imagine they’re in the moment too.

One form of persuasion that I think is the most important is to have is logical appeal. I picked logical appeal because I only argue through facts. Some way to surely persuade me is to have true facts that I cannot rebut against. Logical appeal is when you have a product that is surely beneficial to whoever you’re selling it to.

Eye appeal is important because it gives the viewer an image in their mind and something they’d enjoy to look at. Personally I can get really bored when only listening to whoever is speaking, a video or image keeps me engaged.

Core Competency Reflection

One strategy or activity that stimulated my imagination on this project was…

having the freedom to showcase our creativity. In my project I added animation on an app called “FlipaClip” because I love drawing! I’m not so good at public speaking so I added a voiceover as if it’s an actual commercial.

I respectfully advocated for my needs on this project by…

spending all the free time I had to work on the project. I was able to complete the project quickly and even allowed my teacher to look through it and tell me what I can fix. I was able to present the project with ease and I was super proud with how it turned out.

This is how I selected images and words to create impact for my planned audience:

I created my whole project, from the logo to all the perks. I selected my images from the voiceover to make it connect more. The rest of my images were all created by me!

I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is…

I wanted to do this whole entire project by myself to push myself out there. Another reason I also wanted to present by myself was to get some extra marks for being brave and going almost first. I can ask teachers and peers for reviews to help me see what I got wrong.
