One thing I learned was how to safely and properly use an AED in the event that I ever need to use one. My key takeaway from this unit was how much your eating and lifestyle habits affect your chances of having a serious cardiac episode, as well as the benefits of daily exercise throughout your entire life. This unit connects to the nutrition unit because both of them emphasized the effects of red meats, and how it is linked to heart problems down the road.
Core Competency Reflection
I can describe how learning about CPR relates to my life because in the event that I ever see someone having a cardiac episode I have the ability to help them until first responders arrive. I also am more conscious about how the foods I eat can affect my health when I become older. One lesson that stimulated my thinking about the importance of CPR was learning about how quickly a person can sustain major internal damage without some kind of blood circulating through their body. Another lesson that showed me the importance of CPR, was being assertive during an incident in order to keep a person alive. I appreciated feedback on my CPR knowledge and skills when it came in the form of constructive criticism, because it lets me know that I did something right, but if I do something wrong it can be detrimental to the objective of CPR.
The alternative energy project made us use communication and collaboration, because we only had 2 class days to complete it, which required all of us to work efficiently, by doing research and summarizing it onto the poster. We had to all work together to cover different points on the poster in order to complete the poster. I learned that that tidal energy is very hard to harness as it requires very specific locations. When we presented the poster we needed to ensure that everybody presented evenly and everybody was ok with the amount/what they were presenting. If I were to improve on one thing, it would be that we practice presenting our poster, because we were not presenting to the best of our groups ability.

To me the main thing that stood out was that these children had a powder put all over them, and then they were burnt with lighters. This stood out to me because not only is it cruel, but it is also something new that I have learned about the abuse in residential schools. What also stood out to me was when John Henderson mentioned that all the history books about Canada mentions that it was discovered by the Europeans, when the indigenous peoples had already settled here, and the Europeans found Canada but did not discover it. I was also surprised to learn that the indigenous peoples had helped the discovery people when their ships got stuck, and whenever they got lost. John had also made a very true point that I never appreciated until he mentioned it, and it was that I can roam the school freely, I get the privilege to choose what I learn. But the one thing that had the biggest effect on me was that if someone came and took me from my home/school there would be outrage and the police would be there right away, while children who were taken to residential schools were forced by the government, and if anyone tried to free the children they would go to jail. The line that Joe said that made me feel the effect of residential schools was when he said, “kill the Indian in the children.”
One connection I made between John Henderson’s talk and Rita Joe’s poem, was that one of the first things that happened was the children were taught English, and had their traditional language stripped from them.
My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include looking on several different websites to ensure that the information that I am using is legitimate and is not fake. When it seems the good ideas just won’t come to me, I take a step back, and take a brain break because is I am frustrated, or annoyed with the work I am not productive, and taking a step back will eliminate those feelings, in order to help calm myself and become as productive as possible. If I notice that my group is not getting any work done, that’s a sign that my group needs help and we can get support by asking the teacher or peer tutor to help us gain some ideas, and correct any mistakes that we may have made.
Some of the most important things I learned was safety, and the proper way to operate machines and tools, not only to keep myself safe, but to also prevent the machine from being damaged. I also learned very useful skills such as welding, with both oxy-acetylene, and mig welding. I also learned different strategies on how to do projects, by getting help from others.
I feel normal because usually my day is uneventful and is the same every day.
Health and Wellness Core Competency Reflection
Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle include playing sports year round, eating healthier, and working out on the days that I have nothing. Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include taking breaks when I need them so I don’t burn myself out, and I try to work on my assignments over a few days rather than one night. When I am sad, angry or frustrated, doing things that I have fun doing help me be more productive or calm. This is because these things get my mind off of my work and let me reset. When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I have something to eat so that I have some energy in me and that usually is what I need.
I appreciate feedback on what I could work on and prefer it comes in the form of constructive criticism rather than trying to tell me that what I am doing is wrong and not helping me do it the right way. When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I step back from my work, and re assess what I am working on. And I think about what is a better way to deal with the task at hand. I respectfully advocate for my needs by asking my classmates for help, and if that does not help then I ask the peer tutor or teacher. To celebrate an accomplishment such as completing a certain amount of work, I take a break from my work and watching tv. Sometimes I will even end my work for the day if I feel I did enough.
I chose this image because a lock represents being secure and it is on a laptop which shows being secure or safe on the internet and on your devices.
What is your digital footprint?
Your digital footprint is what you leave behind after each search, post, and view that you do. Your digital footprint is used for everything from personalizing advertisements to employers using it to see what type of person you are outside of the workplace. The digital footprint that you leave behind can never be deleted and just magically go away because someone can screenshot it and send it to someone, but also all your information is stored on a server and can be recovered fer a certain amount of time.
What does it mean to stay safe on the internet?
Staying safe on the internet includes deleting old accounts, not over posting, and not posting personal information. Deleting old accounts keeps you safe because by not deleting your old accounts you are leaving it for everyone to easily see. By not over posting you reduce the risk of accidentally posting something you may regret or not mean to post. Not posting personal information is important because it is personal for a reason.
What are steps you can take to be safer online?
Some ways to control your digital footprint is to make accounts private, and all social media platforms allow this and there are many YouTube tutorials on how to do this. Make your accounts only visible to certain people, and search up your name occasionally, to see what shows when someone does search your name.
What to do if there is something that concerns you?
If there is something that concerns, you about your social media you should delete the post. If someone else is falsely posting about you, Google has an option for you to report the person and have their whole account or website removed without their discretion. You can also confront the person in their DM’s or in the comments section if you have the confidence to. If someone is attacking you online block them and if it is up to a certain level, you can contact the authorities if that is what you want.
Personal/Social Core Competency Self Assessment
I know my digital footprint can have both positive and negative consequences including account bans so I adjust my actions to make a positive footprint by not posting as much, and only posting what is necessary and gives a positive attitude.
I make digital ethical choices such as not posting certain things, and reporting content in order to make my online areas safer and more positive for myself and others who want the same.
Some short/ long term goals with my digital spaces include learning about other peoples perspectives and my plan to achieve them is to be open minded when someone makes a post that does is not what my personal beliefs are, and listen in an unbiased way.

Problem: This family of 4 needs a schedule and a plan for their dinner this week. As a group, we need to figure out who and what each person will make and when they will make it. We must think about their cooking skills, free time, cooking time, and when the whole family is at home. We also need to think about what meals will keep them full for any activities they have after.

Justification:
Monday- Teen 2 cooks Monday because that’s when they have the most free time when everyone else is more busy. They made grilled cheese sandwiches because its easy, and they don’t have much cooking experience.
Tuesday – Parent A is cooking because they have free time and a good cooking experience to make experienced food recipe. The Vegetable Thai Pad is a filling meal and has good nutrients for things such as sports. For teen 2 for example, it can be used for tomorrow’s lunch or breakfast, as leftovers
Wednesday – Teen 1 is cooking tonight because they wanted to help her parents and make dinner before she needed to leave for an activity. They chose to do chicken noodle soup because it’s a filling meal and there can be some left over.
Thursday – Parent B cooks because it is there turn to cook. They made black bean tacos because they parent B has an activity at 7:30 and this is one of the easiest and quickest meals available.
Friday- Teen 1 & 2 are cooking together because they have a lot of free time that day. They are making spaghetti because it is a quick and simple meal that they can both cook that the whole family can enjoy.
Our group shared information by making a plan at the beginning of the assignment and decided what everyone was going to do, and how our group would divide up.
Our group used technology to create the entire project, except for when we wrote in our own versions of the project. The technology helped because it was less time consuming, but if we didn’t have a laptop/tablet then it was very hard to get anything done.
We distributed our tasks by splitting our group into two groups so that we all could get help from a partner. We assigned each group a parent, and a kid, as well as a day to solve for. From there is was each partnership that would decide what they would do.
I did the chart for Thursday, as well as the justification for Thursday which is below the solution chart.
Self Assessment: Collaboration and Critical Thinking
Some things I thought about before dividing up the tasks between our group was how can we all do our fair share of work without any excessive repetition.
I knew the group was working well when we get to work and I could see work being done by everybody on the word document, and nobody was finding any major issues with our system that was in place.
I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work because when I see the criteria, and I know what I have to do in order to get a certain mark.
I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches like when I read Ms. Lam’s feedback and made the necessary corrections, and noticed why I needed to make that revision and how it made my project look better.
Examples if where I communicate clearly and purposely can be seen when I do the whiteboard work with a partner because I have to work effectively with a partner that the teacher assigns in order to be able to move on. This also helped me learn new ways how to do the math because I am learning other ways to do math when I work with a partner. In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by asking questions of something doesn’t make sense. The ways I communicate at school differ from how I communicate at my sports because at school I am here to learn and get an education, while at my sports I am there to perform better, and in order to win I need to give my teammates feedback and info about other teams and players.
