Transforming Parabolas

y =

y = 6(x+4)² – 5

y = -3/2(x – 3)² + 1

y = 1/6(x – 7)² + 1

y = 1/65x² – 10

In each of these equations, the parameters a, h, and k play crucial roles in determining the transformations of the parabola y = x². The value of “a” controls the vertical stretch or compression and the direction of the parabola. When “a” is greater than 1, as in y = 6(x+4)² − 5, the parabola is vertically stretched, making it narrower than y=x². In contrast, when “a” is between 0 and 1, as seen in y = 1/6(x−7)² + 1, the parabolas are vertically compressed, appearing wider; this transformation is made more dramatic in y = 1/65x² – 10. If “a” is negative, as in y = −3/2(x−3)² + 1, the parabola opens downward, indicating a reflection across the x-axis. The values of “h” and “k” independently control the horizontal and vertical translations. The “h” value moves the parabola left or right; for example, in y = 6(x+4)²− 5, shifting the parabola 4 units left. The “k” value, like in y = −3/2(x−3)² + 1, where k = 1, moves the parabola vertically, in this case, 1 unit up. By examining the graphs of each equation, I could see how each transformation affected the width, direction, and position of each specific parabola, with the differences in stretch, compression, and translations visible between the graphs.

Self-Assessment

How did you represent the same mathematical idea in multiple ways in this assignment?
I represented the transformations of parabolas by using equations and corresponding graphs. The equations showed how changes in “a”, “h”, and “k” values transformed the shape and position of the parabolas, and the graphs provided a visual representation of these transformations.

State some of the relevant mathematical vocabulary words you used to demonstrate your understanding and their definitions. State where you found the definitions (your own memory, class notes, online?).
I used terms like “vertical stretch,” “compression,” “reflection,” “horizontal translation,” and “vertical translation.” These terms came from my memory and class notes, where we discussed how each part of the parabola equation affects the graph.

How did you use formatting to share your information in a clear and organized way?
I used a paragraph format with logical progression, introducing each parameter (a, h, and k) and explaining its effect on the graph. In addition, bullet points for the self-assessment kept my responses organized and easy to follow.

A) I learned how to apply an AED to help save a life. By using a shock from the AED, it can help restart the heart’s beating and get it back into rhythm.

B) A key takeaway from the practical CPR test would be to call for help, even if you believe you are certified and trained it is still better if others are aware of the situation and find help.
C) This unit connects to the nutrition unit because people can help prevent heart attacks and strokes before they even happen, with healthy eating.

Core Competency Reflections

In this unit, I am proud that I accomplished my CPR certification by learning the steps on how to save a life and passing this test.

One lesson that stimulated my thinking about the importance of CPR was hearing all the people in others’ family and seeing how many people have been affected.

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by sharing my ideas and introducing new ways of thinking to others’.

Science Reflection

Core Competency 1: Communication (Self-Reflection)

Reflecting on my communication skills during the biofuels presentation, I recognize the importance of clarity and engagement. I aimed to convey complex scientific information in a way that everyone in the audience could understand. I used visual aids effectively, including diagrams and charts, to enhance the overall comprehension of biofuels and their significance. Encouraging questions and interactions helped create a more dynamic and inclusive presentation environment.

One aspect I believe I excelled in was adapting my language to the audience’s level of scientific understanding. I made an effort to strike a balance between technical terms and accessible explanations, ensuring that everyone could grasp the key concepts. However, upon reflection, I realize there might be areas where I could have further improved clarity or adjusted my communication style to better connect with certain audience members.

In future presentations, I aim to continue refining my communication skills, paying close attention to audience feedback and adjusting my approach accordingly. This self-awareness will be valuable in tailoring my communication style for diverse audiences and making science more accessible to a broader range of people.

I was particularly adept at highlighting the limitations and challenges associated with biofuels, promoting a thoughtful consideration of the broader implications. By acknowledging potential drawbacks, such as competition for agricultural land and sustainability concerns, I aimed to engage the audience in a more nuanced discussion.

Looking forward, I recognize the ongoing importance of critical thinking in my scientific endeavors. I plan to continue exploring the complexities of biofuels and other scientific topics, encouraging myself and others to question assumptions, analyze information critically, and contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the subjects at hand. This reflective approach will be instrumental in my growth as a communicator and critical thinker in the field of science.

Reflecting on My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

This year I enjoyed the freedom that came with being in a new school. With the newfound independence in grade 9, I have the freedom to explore a wider range of subjects and extracurricular activities. Being a part of the basketball team and competing in high stake games during our season helped me meet new people and create close friendships with my teammates. Moreover, the large school results in no longer being confined to a single classroom, but instead, moving from class to class, interacting with different teachers and classmates. Grade 9 was memorable because of all the new people and lasting friendships I created.

My Favourite Website

Litbug this year has been helpful for me to view summaries and analyses of the various novels and short stories we covered throughout the year. Litbug gave me a source to compare my answers and read points of view I might have missed in a story.

My Favourite Video

At the beginning of Spanish 9, I was struggling to memorize the alphabet and the proper pronunciation. Therefore, my teacher supplied us with a few videos to help us learn the alphabet, one was Senor Jordan. In this video, the use of acronyms helped me to memorize and correlate sounds and letters in this video.

My Favourite Image

This photo depicted one of our greatest successes during our basketball season. Being a part of the district champion team gave me an introduction to High School Basketball. Throughout our entire district run, I learned the many aspects that contribute to a successful season. such as watching film on the opposing team, learning their player’s habits, and developing strategies.

My Favourite Quote

We learn from failure, not from success

—  Bram Stoker

I chose this quote because, with all my work and assignments, especially this year, I have improved most when I received feedback in areas I can improve. Viewing feedback on my work gives me focus points in my assignments, resulting in improved marks.

Learning the Scientific Method: Self Assessment

My Golf Ball Tower
My Egg Dropper

Curricular Response

While working on my paper tower and egg dropper I learned how to problem solve and find new ways to reach a goal. I encountered many problems when I was working on my paper tower, but one was how my tower would cave in. Due to the height of my tower it couldn’t support the weight of the golf ball, so I added more support to my base. Overcoming problem in my structure helped me learn to problem solve and test different possibilities.

Core Competency Self Assessment and Creative Thinking

When trying new things, I expect setbacks and failure and use them to develop my ideas. An example of this from the Scientific Method labs would be while making my golf ball tower, using a three leg design for the base made the tower unstable and difficult to stand. Instead, I went back and tested my hypothesis to create a more stable base by attaching all the legs to one point, so it created a more stable base. Experiencing these set backs and challenges made my golf tower the lab I’m most proud of.

A Spanish-Speaking Country

Uruguay

Comparison To Your Own Country

Iran and Uruguay are two very different countries with distinct cultures, histories, and political systems. Iran is located in the Middle East, and has a population of around 82 million people; the economy is heavily dependent on oil exports. Uruguay, on the other hand, is located in South America and has a population of around 3.5 million people. It is a democratic country with a president as the head of state. The economy is based on agriculture, industry, and services. Both countries have a rich culture, with Iran known for its rich history, art, and literature, and Uruguay for its tango music and dance. Despite these differences, both countries have a strong sense of national identity and pride.

Core Competency Reflection

I work with others the achieve a goal. I worked with a partner to complete the country project, by sharing ideas and using criticism from each other we created a poster talking about our country.

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others. When collaborating in a group I was able to listen to others’ ideas and provide criticism.

I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. I was able to split the project’s elements with everyone in my group, while taking on my part, I was able to help others and receive criticism to improve.

I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I am going to convey it. During the country project, I gathered information on our country and displayed it on a poster with images, and present the project in front of the class.

Goal

For a future goal, I would want to work on communicating with all my group members and ask for their opinions before making a decision myself; therefore everyone can be involved and have a say.

Scale Factor Project Reflection

Core Competency Reflection

  1. If there is a disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to hear all possible solutions and let everyone share their ideas. Hearing everyone’s opinion opens up new perspectives and ways to approach something.

2. I know the group is working well together when I see everyone working towards the same goal in mind and no one is left out.

3. I show that I value feedback from others in my group by asking for everyones opinions and changing my plan accordingly.

Goals

A goal I would like to work towards is coming up with more creative ideas and being able to build of others to create a plan that everyone agrees with.
