≪•◦ ❈ ◦•≫ By creating a unique Rube Goldberg Machine ≪•◦ ❈ ◦•≫

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ For this project, I’m reflecting on the core competency of creative thinking. Building a Rube Goldberg machine really challenged us to think creatively. The goal wasn’t just to complete a simple task, it was to do it in a fun, intricate, and imaginative way. We aimed to design a machine that would ultimately return a marble to its ‘house’ through a series of interconnected mechanisms. Coming up with ideas for each step, especially finding ways to maintain smooth motion, truly pushed our creative boundaries.

Throughout the design process, several aspects of the machine went exceptionally well. We took great pride in the variety of machines we employed to activate each step, particularly the cup mechanism. One component featured a cup that held a marble, while another part of the machine was designed to trigger the cup to tilt forward, thereby allowing the marble to escape and propagate the chain reaction. It required considerable trial and error to achieve functionality, but once it was operational, it became one of the most rewarding component of the entire machine.

However, not everything functioned perfectly on the first attempt. One of the most significant challenges we faced was timing. At times, one component would operate either too quickly or too slowly, disrupting the entire machine’s performance. Another difficulty involved achieving the precise tilt of the cup, we had to repeatedly adjust the weight, angle, and triggering mechanism. Individually, I concentrated on adjusting my section and experimenting with various solutions until we found one that succeeded. As a team, we maintained constant communication, exchanged ideas, and assisted one another in testing and refining each segment. Teamwork was essential. ˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚

Originally, our end goal was always to get the marble into its house, and thankfully, that goal never changed. What did change was how we got there. Some of our early ideas had to be adjusted or replaced when they didn’t work as expected. For example, we tried using a lever at first but later swapped it out for a ramp when we realized the lever wasn’t triggering consistently.

If I could do this project again, I would start testing the entire chain earlier instead of initially focusing only on individual sections. This approach would have allowed us to identify problems with transitions between parts sooner. I would also use more consistent materials, some pieces lacked sufficient weight or friction, which led to delays or failures.

Overall, this project was an excellent opportunity to practice creative thinking and problem solving in a hands-on manner. It was really fun to see how all our ideas came together in the end, and even better when the marble finally made it home.

To improve retention of math lessons, I’ll start by reviewing each day’s lesson for a few minutes after class. I’ll set aside specific times during the week to go over past material to stay on top of everything and avoid cramming. For unit tests, I’ll create a study schedule, breaking down the material into manageable chunks and practicing regularly with problems related to each topic. Additionally, I’ll make sure to actively recall what I’ve learned to make sure I’m retaining the information. Leading up to the June exam, I’ll stay consistent with daily reviews and incorporate active learning techniques such as teaching the material to others to deepen my understanding. Social Studies 10: Reflection

This semester, I completed an independent inquiry project about the reasons why individuals are willing to sacrifice their lives for their country. The project explored many motivations such as patriotism, duty, and the sense of unity within military organizations like the U.S. Marine Corps. The most interesting part of my project was exploring how deep emotional connections to one’s country, like patriotism, drive individuals to make extreme sacrifices. I also focused on the role of military unity, particularly through the example of the Montford Point Marines during WWII, as an important factor in motivating people to risk their lives. The project also looked at how these motivations are influenced by cultural expectations and societal pressures.I gathered information by using a variety of sources, including articles, books, and academic studies. One of the best pieces of evidence I used was a study from ScienceDaily, which discussed how identity fusion, or the emotional bond soldiers feel with their group, often leads to extreme acts of self-sacrifice. This helped explain why soldiers, like the Montford Point Marines, were willing to risk their lives for the greater good of their nation.This topic matters today because it helps us understand the motivations behind the sacrifices made by military personnel, especially as war and international conflicts continue to impact societies globally. I’m interested in medical research and have a strong desire to make others feel comfortable about their skin, which is why I want to become a dermatologist. This journey requires me to grow personally since I need to have empathy, effective communication skills, and an extensive knowledge of dermatological problems and treatments. My primary goal is to apply to medical school after earning my undergraduate degree in an appropriate field and getting experience through volunteer work or internships in healthcare facilities. I’m committed to continuous learning to stay updated with the latest advancements in dermatology. ೃ⁀➷ One thing that stands out is the importance of proper hand placement and compression depth during CPR. It’s important to push firmly enough (approximately 2 inches deep) and at the right rate (100-120 compressions per minute), despite the widely held belief that chest compressions are only beneficial when performed properly. This guarantees that important organs, including the heart and brain, receive enough oxygen and blood flow. I may not have realized at the time how accurate the approach must be in order to have a significant impact in an emergency.

What is a key takeaway?

ೃ⁀➷ The importance of responding immediately when someone experiences cardiac arrest is among the most crucial concepts I learned during my CPR unit. The probability of survival and recovery increases with the speed at which CPR is performed. The ability to do compressions technically is important, but so is the ability to remain calm and confident under pressure. You can potentially save a life in an emergency if you have received CPR training.

How does this unit connect to the nutrition unit learned previously?

ೃ⁀➷ The nutrition unit and the CPR unit are related to overall wellness and health. Maintaining cardiovascular health is crucial for preventing heart-related problems that could result in cardiac arrest. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats, for instance, can help control blood pressure and cholesterol. Understanding how important healthy eating is can help us make better lifestyle decisions that lower our risk of heart disease, which may lessen the need for CPR.

Examples of where I communicated clearly and purposefully can be seen in the CPR unit. Clear communication was crucial throughout the theoretical and practical sessions to make sure I knew the proper protocols and could give the appropriate orders in an emergency. As I practiced CPR, I made careful to communicate clearly with my peers, emphasizing the significance of keeping the proper compression depth and pattern.

One area of CPR in which I’d like to spend more time learning is how to perform CPR on infants and babies. Although I am confident in my abilities to administer CPR on adults, I am aware that newborns’ delicate size and physiology necessitate the use of different approaches. To make sure I can give the best care possible, I want to learn more about the proper hand positioning, compression depth, and breath delivery technique.

I am quite proud of my progress in Spanish 9. I went from knowing nothing to being able to communicate and understand an acceptable amount of Spanish. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Toure, she was a truly remarkable teacher. How much I learned in such a short period of time truly astonished me. During that time, I gained knowledge about how to form plural sentences, use the verbs ar, er, and ir, ser, estar, dar, as well as the days of the week and months of the year. My pronunciation was terrible, but this class really helped me become stronger at it, though I still struggle with it.

I completed a presentation this semester where the assignment was to choose a Spanish-speaking nation then present it to the class. You have to go above and beyond to satisfy the ex factor. For instance, you may dress up, provide food, or play music. Considering Mexico was my chosen nation, I brought churros, and I’m rather pleased with how they turned out due to having created the dipping sauce from scratch. Additionally, I’m quite pleased with the way my presentation was formatted. I wished I had more opportunity to rehearse as it was difficult for me to practice my speech given that I had another presentation the day before.

Throughout my PowerPoint presentation, I was able to communicate information, thoughts, and opinions in a successful way using both spoken and visual language. I tried talking with confidence and clarity, making sure that my classmates could easily understand the information presented on each slide.

In order to fulfill the deadline and accomplish my presentation goals, I effectively organized what needed to be done in my Spanish presentation, showcasing my time management skills. I made thoughtful time limits for both the research and the PowerPoint slide creation.

Overall in all, I had a fantastic and pleasant experience in this class, and I’m excited for Spanish 10 to expand my knowledge.

So far, my ninth grade year has been incredible. I gained a tremendous amount of new knowledge while having an excellent time at Centennial thus far. Everything that I write is still entirely original, even though AI helps me out. AI is a tool that helps me search information and receive responses, however I add to and rephrase everything. Therefore, even though AI is a great help, everything you receive and see from me is all original.

Writing on why violence does not end conflicts was required of me. The same goes for myself and for violence. I agree that finding nonviolent ways to use force in order to voice our opinions and influence change is crucial during a revolution or protest. The chance for positive change relies among peaceful means, such as speech, peaceful protests, and awareness raising. It comes down to defending what we believe while respecting other people’s rights and personal space.

Core Competency Reflection

When I work with people I don’t know well, I make an effort to be incredibly approachable and open. I strive to be very friendly and I always have a wide smile. Along with listening to their thoughts and opinions, I also don’t hesitate to share my own. It is all about developing  communication and trust. I always make sure to use evidence to support my conclusions and judgments when I have to make them. Making decisions based on evidence allows me to make better, more logical choices. It’s a really useful skill to have, particularly when there are several options or points of view to consider.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ My progress in both my math competency and the communication portion of my core competency was shown by the completion of several assessments and my Scale Factor Project. My mathematics knowledge from the recent tasks has enabled me to successfully explain and demonstrate math ideas to my peers who have struggled with math this semester. I was able to make my points understandable to my peers and improve their understanding of the concepts. I was able to demonstrate my ability to think logically and solve problems as I worked with shapes, calculated proportions, and took precise measurements. I was able to precisely identify and understand the original shapes as well as their scaled equivalents thanks to these approaches. Math was a hard subject for me in the eighth grade. I received an overall grade of developing and emerging/developing on nearly all of the tests. I was aware that I was capable of more. I gave an immense amount of effort this year, and as a result, I received proficiency and high proficiency on every test and assignment. I felt quite proud of myself, knowing that I have a lot of potential to keep growing. ✧ ˚ · . ⋆·˚ ༘ *

╭┈◦•◦❥•◦ Personal/Social + Foods 10 ˚ ◌༘♡ ⋆。˚ ꕥ

Increasing the amount of healthy foods in my diet is one of the things I have been doing lately to stay healthier. I learned about the effects that whole grains, fruits, and vegetables have on our bodies. Not only are they delicious, but they are also packed with all the nutrients our bodies require for growth. My foods 10 class taught me about their advantages, and I’ve been interested ever since. I’ve participated in many enjoyable food classes with my classmates, where we collaborated to prepare delicious and nutritious meals. It involves taking responsibility for my own duties and collaborating in creating tasty and nourishing foods. I worked with my group to plan, prepare, and perform the recipes while highlighting the many duties and obligations that each team member had. Through this experience, I also gained useful skills like problem solving, teamwork, and communication. This is the dish my group and I created through using the skills listed above. ◦•●◉✿✿◉●•◦

Throughout my book report in English using PowerPoint on the book Caraval, I allowed my creativity to wander. I was inspired to design unique transitions to capture the mood of the game, which resembles a colourful and mysterious carnival. I have also picked interesting quotes from the book. Another idea I had was making a slide that showcased the many characters and their unique outfits and abilities. I attempted to include some interactive features, such as a quick game that is connected to the book, but I was unable to locate a website that would let me do so. I made the most of all of my senses by including visual elements that improved the liveness of my characterization of Caraval, such a unique transitions as I said before. I chose the song “Carousel” by Melaine Martinez for my presentation’s soundtrack given that it has a connection to the book and helps to set the right tone. I intended to include props for touch that would have allowed my audience to interact with the story physically, but they were all quite pricey, so I decided against it. For smell, I decided to wear a perfume that I thought would go well with Scarlett’s fragrance.

Conclusion:

╭┈──── ◌ೄ◌ྀ ˊˎ Overall, this year has been incredible, and I’ve grown and learned a lot throughout it. Over the course of the year, I have made a lot of unforgettable memories and discovered a new passion, science. Anticipating what lies ahead for me, I am excited to strive.
