Natural Selection Critical Thinking Self-Assessment

This experiement is designed to show how the process of natural selection occurs in a predator/prey relationship. The prey is the insect
(Yummi treatus) which is represented by the licorice candy in the photo i have provided. There are two pigmentations red and black for this species. The predator is a large bird which is you called the Dodo studentus.

Critical Thinking Self-Assessment Prompts:

I demonstrated that i can collect and analyse evidence when i… participated as the predator to catch the preys on different coloured backgrounds. I analysed evidence by comparing my results to each background to note which prey survived better given to their environment/background.

I demonstrated that i can connect evidence i collected to big ideas when i…am using the data and procedure of the experiment in order to connect it to real life applications or where the background represents in an environment for that specific species.

I demonstrated that i can make predictions based on evidence when i…know the purpose of the experiment and the results that will be discovered, i can predict these results based on my understanding of “camoflouge” and the importance that blending in has on which prey the predator will most likley choose in each scenario.

Learning Strength: Managing my time/ meeting my deadlines.

I’m a very organized person, what I mean by that is I like to start working immediately as I receive an assignment or task. I feel less anxious and flustered when I have accomplished something.

Core Competency Reflection

An example of me using time management is when I was in my LEC class, which this class is for finishing your other classes homework. I used time management when I had many tasks and deadlines for all my classes, by concentrating on one of my classes then doing the others one by one. This helped me be successful in the further week because I was able to stay on track and forget about being over loaded with work by using this method.

What is the game you played?

I played the game called “Arrange Numbers”. Move one tile at a time to arrange the numbers in order with the fewest moves.

What was some strategies that you used to win the game?

Describe whether you think the game uses inductive or deductive reasoning?

The game uses inductive and deductive reasoning because you use inductive to move the numbers but it’s deductive as well because you know the order of the numbers.

How did you study? 

I studied by using a partner with them quizzing me by either reading a word and I write it or them saying a word in Spanish and I write what I heard.

How much did you study?

I didn’t study much because I knew most of the things that were going to be on the test but I just looked over so about one hour at least.

Were you proud of your mark?

Yes, I was proud of my mark because I thought I did really good on it.

one concept or idea that you feel you understood well in this unit?

I understood how to find the mean, median, mode and range very easily. Also liked finding the z-scores in word problem sometimes.

one concept you would like to find out more about?

I don’t want to find out about anything more I think everything I learnt so far is good enough for me.

one example of how you might use stats in the future?

I could use it in my future job depending what future path I want to take. Marketing, politics, sports, health sciences, investing in houses etc.

Core Competency: What core competencies did you demonstrate with the Research Assignment?  Explain.

I find it easy to be part of a group becuase if im not sure about something i can ask my partner instead of the teacher.

I am kind to others, and support others when they need it becuase i know it can be hard to share ideas with new people but i make sure that their comfortable and not pressured into doing it.

I can identify and describe my qualitites by sharing my thoughts and ideas with the class or contributing in group activities and with my neighbor beside me.

What are your strengths as a person? How do you use your strengths and abilities in your family, relationship and community? 

Some of my strengths as a person are that I’m extremely organized, good at time management and hardworking. I use my strengths and my abilities in my family, relationship and community. For example, I do my chores and other chores around the house to keep things tidy and ready for the day or the week coming up. I use time management in school if I have lots of homework or assignments to do so I don’t fall behind and to make sure I have a schedule. Lastly, I’m hardworking with daily tasks like finishing my chores or putting my full effort into my classes. 

The ways I communicate at school differ from how I communicate at lacrosse in these ways: 

For school I am very focused and advocate for myself in my classes. I want to do my best, so I study and get tutors for classes I struggle with. I’m very shy when it comes to new people but when I’m with my friends and people I know well I’m more outgoing. As for lacrosse I am a team player and work well with everyone on my team. Lacrosse can be very aggressive, and at times quite rough but it’s fun and I enjoy playing it.  

Others find my feedback useful because I… always have a different perspective than they do. I think about all the possible ways to approach an assignment. My group mates find my ideas quite useful when doing projects because I like to think outside the box and come up with unique thoughts to add towards the work. I am creative and love to add my input into sometimes boring topics to make it more interesting.

Self Reflection

  1. What skills of you does this showcase? This project shows off my skills by researching up infomation and putting data into a powerpoint.
  1. What core competency does this fill? The project filled in the Critical and Reflective Thinking becasue i had to brainstorm my own ideas/ thoughts and anwser my own questions becasue i was working by myself.
  1. Why did you choose this?  I chose this because i did a really good job on this assignment by taking it seriously and working above and beyound on it.
  1. What did you learn during this project? I learned a little more about my backround/ cutlure and also learned more of my history.

Core Competecny Reflection

I can understand and share infomation about a topic interest in a clear, organized way. I chose this one because i find it talks about me in a short sentence easily.

I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. This “i can” statement describes me very well because im a good listener and contribute to my classmates questions.

I am kind to others, and support others when they need it. Im always their for a friend and classmate when they are having a hard time and always there to comfort them if they want me to.

I work with others to achieve a goal. I am working on this goal because sometimes when working with new people i dont attend the conversation once confortable but i plan on achieving this goal by joining after school activities to get more social and get more outside my comfort zone.

My Future Career

In order to achieve my career there are a few steps i need to take. First, i need to graduate high school so that i can apply to Douglas’ Criminology Program. At the same time i will also need a job so i can pay for tuition throughout my degree. Once graduated i can apply at various insitutions to start my career as a detective. I may or may not start with that job tittle right away but i will work towards it. Therefore, in order to earn my position as a detective, i will need to graduate high school, obtain a criminology degree, graduate post-secondary, and finally apply myself and work towards becoming a detective.

Core Competency Reflection

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others. I chose this one because i use my ideas wisely to create unique things, and collaborate my thoughts/ideas with others frequently. I also connect with this “i can statement” very well becuase it describes me a lot.

I can develop a body of creative work over time in an area of interest or passion. I can get ideas that are groundbreaking ordisruptive and can develop them to form a body of work over time that has a impact in my community or beyond.

I can reflect on my thinking. I am working on that goal becuase i want to start thinking about my future and make sure that i am on the right path towards my goals. In order to achieve this goal i will right now my thoughts/plans and sort out the most effecient route forward.
