Core Competency Self Assessment

My artifact from 20C Titration Lab

Thinking

I can analyze evidence to make judgments. While in the lab you should always make qualitative observations because it shows you are actively watching and paying attention while reading and doing the lab procedure. When doing the 20C Titration Lab I made qualitative observations like the colour which was a pale pink, liquid, translucent, when the base met with the acid it made a bright pink colour but then went away when mixed together and the more base you add to the acid the more harder it is to get rid of the pink. I believe I showed this Core Competency while in the Lab.

Quadratic Equations in Vertex Form

Red f(x)=x2 This is an example of a parent function parabola. The vertex is (0,0) because the h and k values are both 0 and together they make the vertex. The parabola opens upward because the ‘a’ value is positive 1.

Purple y=1(x-3)2 +1 This is an example of a parabola that is shifted up vertically. The vertex is (3,1) because the h value is 3 and the k value is 1. The parabola opens upward because the ‘a’ value is 1 and its opens upward when the ‘a’ value is positive. The h value is what shifted it to the right because the h value is 3. The k value is what shifted the parabola up 1 because the k value is 1.

Green y=-3(x+2)2-1 This is an example of a parabola that shifted down vertically. The vertex is (-2,-1) because the h value is -2 and the k value is -1. The parabola opens downwards because the ‘a’ value is -3 and it opens downwards when the ‘a’ value is negative. The h value is what shifted it to the left because its value is -2. The k value is -1 which shifted the parabola down 1.

Yellow y=3(x+2)2+0 This is an example of a parabola that is shifted left horizontally. The vertex is (-2,0) because the h value is -2 and the k value is 0 and together they make the vertex. The parabola opens upwards because the ‘a’ value is 3. It has shifted to the left because the h value is -2. The parabola did not move up or down because the k value is 0, therefor it cant go up.

Black y=-2(x-2)2-1 This is an example of a parabola that is shifted right horizontally. The vertex is (2,-1) because the h value is 2 and the k value is -1. The parabola opens downwards because the ‘a’ value is -2. It has shifted to the right because the h value is 2. It has also moved down 1 because the k value is -1.

Red y=-10(x+4)2-1 This is an example of a parabola that is stretched vertically. The vertex is (-4,-1) because the h value is -4 and the k value is -1 and together they make the vertex. The parabola has shifted to the left because the h value is -4. It has moved down 1 because the k value is -1. It has also been stretched vertically because the ‘a’ value is -10 and for the parabola to be narrow the a value must be greater than 1 or smaller than -1.

Blue y=1÷3(x+5)2+1 This is an example of a parabola that is compressed vertically. The vertex is (-5,1) because the h value is -5 and the k value is 1. The parabola is shifted to the left because the h value is -5. It has moved up 1 because the k value is 1. The reason its been compressed is because the a value is 1÷3 and for the parabola to be compressed the ‘a’ value must be greater than and or smaller than 1.

Communication Core Competency Reflection

I can understand and share information in a clear, organized way. I made sure my writing and graphs are are organized and neat. When creating my graph I made sure to not bunch all the parabolas together and I was also mindful to not spread them out too much. I also made sure to do a variety of different types of quadratic equations. When writing my reflection on my graph I wrote it in an organized way.

I think about what I am going to convey and to whom i will convey it to. When writing my reflection on my graphing I made sure to explain the roles of the ‘a’ ,h’ and ‘k’ values, like why the parabola was shifted left or right, why it was moved up or down, why its facing upward or downward and lastly how it is stretched or compressed.

Life Saving Measures

I learned a lot from the CPR, Naloxone and Substances Presentation. From the CPR and Naloxone Presentation learned that there is a law called the “Good Samaritan Act” that protects individuals who attempt or save a person without getting charged, they could have done CPR or use Naloxone on an individual who has overdosed. From the CPR Presentation I learned that when giving a baby CPR you use two fingers and not your whole palm. Lastly I learned from the Naloxone Presentation that Naloxone only lasts for 20-30 minute until it wears off. These three presentations benefited me and the others around me so I know what to do in an emergency, that could be having to give CPR or giving Naloxone to and individual.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

“I can analyze evidence to make judgements.” This prompt relates to myself because I am able to analyze a situation and then be able to make quick decisions. This would be good for in a situation there is someone who needs CPR, I will be able to make a quick decision to help them.

Chanson Francophone Presentation Project

Core Competencies

As an active listener, I notice that I … was able to put and use many structures we learned in class into my slides and my speech. The structures I used and talked about make sense to me.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in… when I only used structures we learned in class so when I talk my class can understand what I am saying and I understand what I am saying.

Unit Core Competency Self-Assessment Life Science 11

  1. Artifact I am most proud of the worm dissection lab
  2. Explanation; Share the experience of collaboration for your artifact (Consider roles and responsibilities, strategies used to navigate project goals and any misunderstandings, how you shared ideas with one another, and what you would improve on for next time).
  3. For this lab we dissected an earthworm and it was very interesting for me and my lab partner. My lab partner and I had equally fair roles. One of my roles was to put the pins into the worm to open it up and my lab partner was cutting it open. We helped our peers when they were stuck on something and they helped us when we were stuck on something. When we didn’t understand something we went and advocated for ourselves. When my lab partner and I had different ideas we were able to compromise. Something I would improve for next time would to ask more questions so I understood more.

Book Club/Group Work Reflection

Curricular Response- respond to any of the following questions in three to four questions.

Describe some of the challenges you faced reading your book club book and describe how you overcame those challenges. What was something about the author’s writing style that you liked or disliked when reading your book club book? In the beginning of the book I was confused because Christopher was going from talking about his personal life to talking about calculations. This made me confused and lose interest in the book. I liked how the author went from the book from being boring to very interesting.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

5. I was able to focus on what we needed to do throughout the process of our task and kept working even when I found something challenging. I think fit this criteria because I was able to stay focus while others might have not been and I was able to tackle hard challenges. 2. I listened to others’ ideas, considered their points of view and offered constructive suggestions. I almost fit with this criteria but sometimes its hard for me to understand some peoples ideas.

Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Mind Map

Core Competency:  What core competencies did you demonstrate with the Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Mind Map Assignment?  Explain

I deliberately learn about things that interest me, and new ideas pop into my head. I decided to do my mind map song on my favorite singer, Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift interests me in what she dose and her songs she makes. By me researching something I love I was able to get more ideas and build them together to form my mind map.

Monopoly Assignment Reflection

Core Competency:  What core competencies did you demonstrate with the Monopoly Assignment?  Explain.

“I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.” This Core Competency was in the Communication section. On my Monopoly Assignment I showed that I can understand what the terms mean by writing the chance cards with scenarios that correspond to the term. I also show I understand the topic because I know which terms go with each other.

Core Competency Goal Setting

When it seems, the good ideas just won’t come to me, I want to stop what I am doing so I can focus on thinking of good ideas instead of blanking out of ideas. Sometimes it is hard for me to do two tasks at a time so I think if I do one task at a time I will be able to come up with good ideas.

When I am sad, angry or frustrated, I want to stop what I am doing a take a small break to regain my focus back. Ways I can regain my focus could be going for a walk, read a book, organize or anything that can keep my mind away from whatever was making me stressed or overwhelmed.
