Literary Studies Core Competencies

Thinking

I learned to analyze and make judgments about several works and plays. I reflected to consider purpose and perspectives, pinpoint evidence, and draw conclusions. A play where this was evident was Shakespeare’s Macbeth. I read the play and listened to the audiobook to fully develop my ideas. I then wrote extensive notes on each act, breaking down themes, characters, and significant passages. This approach allowed me to analyze the play in depth and gain insights into its meaning.

I applied critical and reflective thinking to acquire and interpret information, and to make choices about how to communicate my ideas. I implemented this into my book response that I shared with the class. I analyzed a book of my choice, breaking down characters and key plot points. I then strategized on how to communicate my thoughts effectively and in a attention catching way.

Berry Pavlova with Lemon Curd

Making and Sharing Reflection

To create this dessert, key tools include an electric mixer, whisk, small measures, pot and mixing bowls. Technologies like the oven are critical, while refrigeration is necessary to store the components overnight. The stove is used to make the tangy lemon curd. Food sources include eggs, sugar, cream, fresh berries, butter, and lemons, with pantry staples such as vanilla extract. Processes involve making the meringue and lemon curd on day one, and assembling the dessert with whipped cream, heated lemon curd and berries on day two. Costs were cheap, as we already had the majority of the ingredients. My group and I shared this meal with various teachers and peers.

Core Competency Reflection

As an active listener, I notice that I stop what I am doing when the teacher is speaking. I focus on key points such as ingredients we will need and various procedures we can follow.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in several steps of each lab. Before the process, my group and I communicate about our duties and what steps will take place. During the process I ask for help when I am confused and help peers who are struggling.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by acknowledging their help and support. I ensure that I do my share as well. This shows that I am not taking advantage of their time and energy.

A goal I have for the future is to perfect my baking and cooking skills by experimenting with more intricate meals and desserts, such as tarts. This will positively impact my cooking experience later in life. I can share them with peers to receive criticism and develop my skills.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication/Collaboration

My above artifact is a squid my partner and I dissected together during a lab activity. Before starting the lab, we thoroughly planned our approach. We discussed who was going to collect the necessary tools, and what our personal duties were. This ensured that we were prepared before beginning the lab, making the process smooth. We collaborated all throughout the class, communicating and working together to maintain an efficient and successful lab. My partner collected the squid while I gathered the dissection tools. Together, we found various parts on the squid and labeled our scientific drawings, ensuring accuracy. I used several strategies to collect relevant information for the lab, including asking my partner clarifying questions and seeking guidance from the teacher when needed. This collaborative approach allowed us to successfully complete the lab while learning significant information about squid anatomy. I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener when my partner is unsure about a task.

Reflection on my learning in Marketing and Promotion 11 course

Curricular Competency Reflection

My partners and I used various styles and themes to create two creative and eye-catching posters. For the Redbull poster, we used celebrity endorsement, displaying Shaquille O’Neal as someone who enjoys our product, using it to reach his full potential on the court. For the SpongeBob poster, we utilized character presenter, to showcase the new Krabby Patty meal at Wendys. Throughout the development of our posters, the website Adobe helped us edit and design. Our target market for each product is quite broad. We were hoping to appeal to numerous kinds of consumers, gaining traction from many. We spent time thinking through our ideas, and how to properly convey our message. We also looked at inspiration advertising posters to get ideas and learn how to create an appealing design.

Core Competency Reflection

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include using multiple sources of information, gaining as much insight as possible. I use my own sources, such as YouTube, Google, or Pinterest, as well as the ones provided for me by the teacher. This may include PowerPoints or links to videos.

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to discuss beforehand about what our jobs are and how we can collaborate to make a proficient piece of work. If anyone gets confused throughout the process, we ask each other/the teacher questions.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is brainstorming ideas on a scrap piece of paper or a blank word document before starting the good copy. This allows me to get multiple ideas out before forgetting. Additionally, I got inspiration through other people’s ads and posters before beginning.

Core Competency

Personal awareness and responsibility

1) Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle include eating healthy and working out regularly. I take a morning fitness and conditioning class, and plan on joining the senior basketball team to help me achieve this goal. I also exercise on my own time and drink lots of water.

2) This year, I want to take on leadership roles. Some skills that make me a leader in the area of athletics (basketball) are being a team player, showing up to every practice, and helping my struggling teammates. I was the captain of the team last year and hope to do so again.

CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

CPR Reflection

In this unit, I learned the proper steps of performing CPR. I also learned the major differences between a heart attack, a cardiac arrest and a stroke. Additionally, I learned about the several risk factors that can lead to these incidents. This includes lack of exercise, stress, and smoking.

A key takeaway from this unit was how to perform CPR. If you are trained, step in and make a difference. Never assume someone else will.

Throughout the nutrition unit, we discovered what components make up a healthy diet. This includes a balance of fruits, veggies, grains, proteins and water. If someone’s diet is considered “unhealthy” They are more likely to
have the risk factors that increase the chance of heart disease or stroke. This includes obesity and high blood cholesterol.

Core Competency Reflection

I can describe how CPR relates to my life. I have had various family members suffer from a stroke. If this happens again, I will know what to do. I understand “hazards and holler,” and “PLT,” and can transfer this to a real life situation.

In this unit, I am proud that I received a 29/30 on the exam. I accomplished this by paying attention in class, and studying the booklet we were given.

In discussions and conversations, I help to build understanding by filling out the booklet questions after every class. This helped me refresh my memory and obtain new knowledge.

My Spanish conversation

Spanish comparison to english

My first language is english. Writing a conversation in a different language can be challenging for several reasons. For me, one of the hardest parts was understanding and using the correct grammar rules. Different languages have unique sentence structures and verb conjugations, which can feel overwhelming at first. Another difficulty I faced was expanding my vocabulary. It takes time and practice to learn new words and phrases, especially when trying to express complex ideas or emotions. Additionally, pronunciation and accent was very tricky .

Core Competency reflection

-I work with others to achieve a goal. My partner and I collaborated easily while working on our conversation.

-I find it easy to be part of a group. My partner and I had no issues while bouncing ideas off of eachother.

-I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. My partner and I equally contributed to the conversation.

-I can form new ideas to create new things, while building on the ideas of others.

Core Competency Self-Assessment: Food Studies

Communication and collaboration

meatball sliders and garlic bread

During this lab I demonstrated communication and collaboration with my group mates. First we spoke about who will be unit and ingredient person. We then ensured that we were all aware of what part of the dish we were making (meatballs or garlic bread), and what jobs we were doing (dishwasher, dish dryer, special duties, unit manager). We collaborated throughout the whole lab by talking to each-other and working together. We helped each other out with our duties and weren’t afraid to ask for help. For example, everyone helped out with dish washing and drying, although it wasn’t everyone’s jobs. I would like to continue collaborating and communicating with my group mates to make for more smooth and fun labs.
