I learned about the stories of the Indigenous territory I am now living on. I gained a deeper knowledge on what place conscious learning is and how it can help me build a reciprocal relationship with the land. It encourages me to embrace the legacy of nature. And through pictures, I was able to construct meaningful personal connections and transform ideas and information using a different form.
Core Competencies Reflection
In this project, I also demonstrated critical and reflective thinking core competency skills. I took time to think about how the place influences my actions today and how it may have shaped my identity. To gain a better understanding of Indigenous communities, I reflect and develop my ideas about Indigenous culture, specifically how they value their connection to the land. I’ve realized that by understanding the historical, cultural, and social significance of Indigenous worldviews, we can promote a mutual respect.
Throughout the first half of the English First People 11 course, I have gained a deeper understanding of Indigenous themes, issues, and perspectives. One assignment that I am particularly proud of is my Pocahontas Synthesis Essay, which required me to analyze the Disney adaptation of the story of Pocahontas and compare it to the true history.
Through this assignment, I learned that while both the movie and the historical account highlight the misunderstandings between two cultures, the movie portrays Pocahontas and Indigenous in a distorted and biased manner. Completing this essay enabled me to acquire a more profound comprehension of the impact of stereotypical views against the Indigenous, specifically related to the portrayal of Indigenous peoples in mainstream media. The representation of historical figures and events in films, as well as other forms of media, can lead to a more severe cultural misinterpretation if the biases are not recognized.
my artifact
I was able to demonstrate growth in my ability to create and communicate curricular competencies and critical thinking core competencies in several ways. I realized the importance of using credible sources to support my writing, especially when discussing sensitive and complex issues such as the perversion of history and the conventional image of minorities. In terms of my writing and representing skills, this assignment allowed me to compile and synthesize information and express my opinion using a purposeful tone and various conventions of language appropriately. The outlining process also helped me immensely in planning and developing my content in a more structured and organized way. By filling out each section of the outline, I was able to establish a clear and logical flow to my writing, making it easier to follow.
Moving forward, I plan to take what I have learned about Indigenous themes, issues, and perspectives and use it towards working on reconciliation. I will continue to study stereotypes and biases in media representations. By understanding the miscomprehended depiction of Indigenous characters and stories, we can honor the Indigenous legacy and contribute to a more accurate and respectful understanding of Indigenous cultures. Our actions can have a significant impact on the community. I believe that by doing so, we can challenge historical inaccuracies and contribute towards a more respectful and just society for all.
In the classifying buttons activity, I demonstrated critical thinking core competency skills with my partner. We observe the buttons and find how they are similar to and different from each other. We went through the classifying process quite a few times and each time we make some judgments while analyzing evidence. My partner and I take on roles and responsibilities to finish this project. We worked together and share our opinions while classifying buttons and tried to make the classification clearer every time we check. We value each other’s opinions and improve our work through collaboration.
I can generate new ideas and build on the ideas of others to create new things. Making a paper bag waist for my shorts is an example of something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about. I searched for some examples to look at when I begin to work on the designing part of the shorts because I did not want to follow every single step in the pattern pieces and I wanted to make some creative changes to make my shorts look unique. This is my very first sewing project, I took a significant risk in my thinking and sewing process. Throughout the process, I also demonstrated critical thinking abilities. I followed the teacher’s instructions to take out the wrong stitches and redid them when I felt dissatisfied with them. I improved my projects by asking for feedback and suggestions. I also reflected on my project based on the criteria and the teacher’s comments. I used my time wisely and kept evaluating how I would spend my time. The skill of critical and creative thinking is important in our daily life, applying critical and creative thinking skills will usually result in a more satisfactory outcome. It not only encourages problem-solving but also increases an individual’s potential for change to become better.
