Core Competency Reflection

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is determining each person’s role in the project at the beginning so there is no confusion or conflict when working on the project.

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I typically get to know them a little better first. Starting off on the right foot helps the group work more effectively and minimizes conflict in the future.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I… During this semester, my heavy school schedule made it necessary to eliminate procrastination and use effective study methods in order to succeed. During study sessions, I often found myself distracted and unmotivated. In the future I intend to find ways to focus and motivate myself while studying. I do not have any plan of what to do to achieve this goal as of yet.

Math Self Assessment

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is the importance of linear and quadratic expressions, equations, systems, and inequalities. Throughout the semester I practiced using a variety of methods to solve problems involving those topics and discovered how these concepts can be applied to real life situations.

To celebrate an accomplishment, such as doing well on an exam, I take a break to do something I enjoy, such as playing video games. However, I try to limit the amount of time I spend doing low-effort, high-dopamine activities, devoting as much time as possible to higher-effort tasks that are more rewarding in the end.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in my assignments and tests, where I strive to make it clear how I arrived at the answer, including steps and calculations.

By being friendly and respectful in the classroom, I make a positive difference to my peers.

Core Competency Self-Assessment – Chemistry 11

I can work with others to achieve a goal.

In our titration lab, I worked with my group to titrate an HCl solution of unknown concentration. Because I was absent the first day, I was somewhat unsure of what to do, but my group members helped me. As a group, we exchanged thoughts and ideas while ensuring everyone took equal part in the work.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility: How I manage school-related stress

Artifact: 😤

When I get stuck on a problem, I have strategies for what to do next. They include taking a short break, re-reading the question slowly, and breaking the problem into smaller steps. If I still don’t get it, I’ll ask a classmate or look up a similar example in my notes. This helps me feel less stuck and more in control.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I either go for a quick walk, grab a snack, or listen to music for a few minutes. Doing something physical or changing my environment helps me reset my brain so I can return to my work with more focus and energy.

I can prevent some school-related stress by planning ahead and breaking assignments into smaller tasks. I use a calendar to keep track of tests and due dates, and I try not to leave everything until the last minute. Being organized helps me feel more confident and less overwhelmed.

When I make mistakes, I don’t beat myself up. Instead, I try to learn from them. I ask myself what went wrong and what I can do differently next time. I know that mistakes are part of the learning process, especially in a subject like math where practicing and correcting errors helps me improve.

Cilantro Lime Honey Chicken + Black Bean Burrito

Making and Sharing Reflection

For the Cilantro Lime Honey Chicken + Black Bean Burrito, we used basic kitchen tools provided at school, like cutting boards, knives, and frying pans. We chose simple, affordable ingredients that could be prepared within the time we had in class. While cooking, our group tasted the food and gave each other feedback, which helped us decide how much lime and honey to use to balance the flavors.

We shared the finished burritos with the rest of our cooking group during class. Looking back on the process, I realized that adding something creamy like sour cream or avocado could improve the texture. If I made this again, I’d also try creating a vegetarian version with roasted vegetables or tofu.

Core Competency Reflection

While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extend understanding by asking questions if I’m unsure about something and checking in with my group to make sure we’re on the same page. I also try to repeat instructions or explain steps out loud so everyone understands what we’re doing next. This keeps us organized and helps avoid confusion while cooking.

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to go over the recipe together at the start and assign roles so everyone knows what to do. I like to make sure we all understand the final goal, especially with timing, so we stay focused and finish on time.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by listening to their suggestions, giving them a chance to lead certain parts, and thanking them for their help. Even small actions, like helping clean up or encouraging someone while they cook, show that I respect and appreciate their effort.

One goal I have for myself going forward is to improve how I handle disagreements in group settings. If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to listen to everyone’s point of view before jumping in with my own opinion. I’m working on this goal because I sometimes try to avoid conflict by staying quiet, but I’ve learned that respectful discussion can actually lead to better teamwork and solutions. To achieve this, I will practice staying calm, asking questions to understand others’ ideas, and suggesting compromises when needed so everyone feels heard and included.

Core Competency Reflection

· I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…

When people are cooperating, there is more talking and less shouting. People tend to be happier when they agree with each other, so that might show on their faces.

· I show that I value feedback from others in my group by…

When people present feedback, I think it’s important to not only consider their feedback but also discuss it with them so it can be better understood and implemented.

· Some short/ long term goals for myself include… and my plan to achieve them is… (include where you might seek help from others)

A goal I have for myself is to limit procrastination and improve my work ethic. I want to work on this goal because I know I can go much farther academically if I simply work harder. To achieve this goal, I plan to set smaller goals for myself such as working hard on an assignment for an hour and then taking a break.

Critical and Reflective Thinking

News Article For Science 9

The process of researching and writing about deforestation in British Columbia has significantly enhanced my critical thinking skills. I gained expertise in research and analysis, evaluating credible sources, and understanding the multifaceted impacts of deforestation on the biosphere, atmosphere, and water cycle. Additionally, I developed problem-solving skills by identifying potential solutions, such as stricter logging laws and alternative materials like bamboo. Moving forward, I aim to improve my work ethic and discipline to minimize distractions, ensuring more focused and efficient research and analysis in future projects.

Focaccia

Making And Sharing Reflection

Creating Focaccia involved several important steps. Firstly, I made a step-by-step plan for production by thoroughly reading the recipe and actively participating in demonstrations, ensuring I understood each step. Secondly, I worked both individually and collaboratively, making necessary adjustments to improve the texture and flavor. Lastly, I identified and used appropriate equipment such as a loaf pan and mixing bowl, along with materials and processes like kneading dough and practicing proper fermentation techniques.

When it came to sharing the Focaccia, I decided to share it with my family. I critically evaluated the success of the recipe by tasting and gathering feedback, which helped me identify areas for improvement. Additionally, I assessed my ability to work effectively both as an individual and in collaboration with others, ensuring that the final product was well-received and delicious.

French 9 Edublog

In French 9, I improved my understanding of sentence structure and grammar. However, I still find speaking in French very challenging.

I am proud of my Family Tree (Arbre de Famille) project. Although it might have been lacking creativity, I am glad I managed to finish it despite it being the bottom of my priorities. I really had to push myself to even start the project, which I started a day before I was due to present.

What went well?

In the end, I got the project done and out of the way.

What might I have done differently?

Many, many things. For one, I could have started it the day it was assigned instead of leaving it in the back of my mind to rot until the day before I was presenting. The Thinking core competency could be better utilized in this situation by limiting procrastination and the endless distractions. The Communication competency could be utilized in this situation by asking for help on the project (mostly the creative aspects). Despite spending time to complete this reflection (if only because my mother would never let me hear the end of it if I failed to complete this Edublog), none of the improvements I mentioned will be applied in the near (and far) future. The kind of person I am just prevents me from telling my procrastination monkey to shut up. Instead, this “monkey” grabs me by the neck and makes me surf the Internet until a day before the due date, when the deadline monster scares him away. After that, the deadline monster forces me to complete the project (meant to be done in 2 weeks) in 24 hours. So far, I have managed to hang on, but I know this procrastinating primate will not serve me well in the future.

ADL Social Studies – Ethical judgement

Is violence justified during a protest?

A) How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project?

AI (mostly ChatGPT) helped find real-life examples to strengthen my argument. Instead of trying to find information on Google, using ChatGPT worked better because AI is better at finding exactly what you’re searching for.

B) How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of the AI?

I only used AI to give me an idea of what to write about. My part of the script was written entirely by me. I did not need to “ensure” anything, because when using the AI, all I asked the AI was “examples of when violence is justified in a protest” instead of “Argument for why violence is justified in a protest”.

C) Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

I initially did not agree with the position I was arguing, but after some research on the subject, I began to understand that violence is necessary in some circumstances.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include…

I often use the Internet, as it’s convenient and mostly yields useful results. Rarely, I will consult another person and gather information that way.

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I…

In such a scenario, I work as I normally would. School assignments rarely require a connection between group members, and while it is nice to know people, it doesn’t change how I approach the assignment.
