Core Competency Self-Assessment Chemistry

“I can analyze evidence to make judgements.” During this lab we learned how to titrate a solution and find the concentration of hydrochloric acid. We added the base which was sodium hydroxide into the hydrochloric acid bit by bit until the new solution became a light pink colour that stays for a minute. We did two trials and in these two trials I had to look at what went well and what didn’t. I analyzed everything that happened and was prepared for our next trial, we figured out what we wanted to change and adapted. On our second try we got it to the perfect shade of pink.

Spanish 10 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication

Profile 3: I communicate purposefully, using forms and strategies I have practiced.

I communicate purposefully, in Spanish we learn tons of words and most of them are verbs. We learn how to communicate with others using these verbs and we learn how to listen to others and pickup on what they are saying. In this project we worked on learning about new words that aren’t verbs but clothing items. I learned words such as caña, polleras, or flecha. Caña translates to cane in Spanish, Pollera translates to skirt, and flecha translates to arrow. This presentation reflected my learning of new vocabulary and how it will consistently help me understand others and communicate even better with others in Spanish. A challenge when working with this core competency is that it can be hard to understand what someone is saying all the time especially if I haven’t learned the words they are using yet. It can also be hard to tell someone about something when I don’t know the words to describe it. I learned that the more you see words in Spanish your brain starts to pick up on them and eventually it becomes way easier to understand someone because you hear common phrases over and over again. I can keep learning Spanish everyday but putting myself in situations where I hear it. I use Duolingo a few days a week and it helps refresh my mind and teaches me all kinds of new words.

Physics Unit Core Competency Reflection

Braden

These two pictures represent the work my group and I did. It has the materials we used and the mass of them. We calculated the kinetic energy, as well as the velocity for each experiment.

My Role:

In this project I think I acted more as a leader. I set all the experiments up and got what we needed to do the experiment. I made sure everyone was doing something in this project. I did most of the calculations on the worksheets above. I also helped my partner Danilo with calculations that he didn’t understand and walked him through the basic steps. I showed him how to calculate Kinetic Energy and showed him how to do a question.

Curricular Competencies

Strength-ThinkingCC:

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. In this project I analyzed most of the evidence. I noticed that not all the tests were the same time, this could be because when I clicked stop and go on the stop watch I wasn’t perfectly accurate. For example, when we did the bean bag drop we did 5 tests. The tests ranged from 0.26 seconds all the way to 0.53 seconds. I think this was my fault since I was the time calculator but the average time came out to 0.37 seconds which seems pretty accurate to me. When we did the wall ball throw there is more than one factor that could affect the time from when the ball is released from the hand and when it hits the wall. The person throwing could be throwing faster sometimes and slower other times. The time keeper could also be off when taking the time. There are many different variables each time you record an answer.

Stretch-SocialCC:

I can support others when they need it. I often get caught up in doing my work and forget that there are other people that could use my help and might not understand how to do the work. I like to think that I am pretty good at science and I can understand it very well. I should prioritize helping others first if I understand the concept fully. In this project I was reminded by my teacher to make sure the other people in the group are doing some of the work and understand it. In the future it is my goal to be able to help others and think about what else I can do when I really understand something.

Socials 10 Midterm Reflection

Core Competency

Inquiry:

My strengths are research and evidence. I am good at finding good solid evidence and research points from many different perspectives. It is something I have learned how to do in the past 6-12 months and have been working towards a personal goal of mine. I think I have accomplished a lot and it has helped me a ton with research projects. When I go to research a project the first thing I do is get as much information as possible from at least 3 different sources. When doing this I start to see patterns and certain information has been said more than once and I know it is probably important information. Then I go back and find information that is interesting and isn’t talked about a lot. For the project I just did I looked at the negative affects of fashion changing in the past 100 years, I came across someone speaking up about fast fashion and how it is causing pollution. I have also been taking my time more and seeing details normally I would pass.

Cause and Consequence:

An area of growth would be with cause and consequence. I can usually spot out basic causes and consequences but I want to be able to go on a deeper level and look at all the little things that not many people look at and find some causes that may relate to the consequence that were so little but could be very important. I can start to do this by taking an extra 5-10 minutes after I think I’m done to find a few more that normally I would miss. My goal is that doing this every time I see an assignment with cause and consequence is that the not so obvious ones will become more obvious. If I do the same thing I did with my last goal I should start to see results by next year. I don’t just want to do be able to go on a deeper level one time I want to be able to consistently.

Curricular Competency

communication:

One of my strengths is communication when working in group. Not a lot of people take initiative so usually I am the one to do so. I enjoy taking leadership and I think I am good at involving everyone and getting them to share their ideas. There has been multiple examples of me taking leadership. In class we did a debate where the class is split into two groups. I took leadership and was “captain” of my debate team where I had to get the group together and involve everyone.

Creative Thinking:

This is an area I am trying to improve in. I want to be able to generate and develop more ideas on my own without help from others. This also ties into wanting to go deeper with cause and consequence. I feel most of the time my ideas and original but sometimes I can’t think of anything and have to go off of someone else’s ideas just to make my own. I can improve in this by starting with my own idea even if it is super small and then go and see other peoples perspectives to build on mine.

Describe career-life goals, personal growth and initial planning for preferred career-life pathway

This career life project is a bit of a wake up call for me. I wasn’t to sure on what classes I should be taking to become an architect. Researching this path and getting advice from blogs, i’ve found a lot of advice on which classes are necessary. I should be trying to put myself in classes like drafting to get some experience of what I could be doing in architecture. My life goals for this career is to get a masters in architecture, this will take me around 7 years of schooling. My preferred school to go to is UBC, I think they have fantastic programs and they are pretty close to home. Another goal of mine is to play for their soccer team. My preferred pathway is to get a job working in construction for a year or two. I hope I can work part time while going to school at UBC. This way once I graduate having this experience in construction will put me ahead of other architectures and will give me a kick start on my career.

Core Competency Reflection

Personal Awareness & Responsibility

  1. I can identify my strengths and limits, find internal motivation, and act on opportunities for self-growth. I take responsibility for making ethical decisions. I can identify my strengths and I know they are in math, and creativity. I can use my strengths to the best of my ability and learn what I can grow to become a better architect. In this project It made me outline my skills and I became more aware of them. One thing I am getting better at is self growth from this project.
  2. I can recognize my strengths and take responsibility for using strategies to focus, manage stress, and accomplish my goals. I can maintain my focus by giving myself little goals to work towards. Once I finish a goal I can take a quick break and get ready to tackle another problem. I’m not a very stressed person but if I am stressed I like to do everything in my power to solve what ever is stressing me. I work best when I have a goal to work towards and I found that out with this project. I would try to finish one slide at a time and once I finished the first one I would take a small break.

Creative Thinking

  1. I can develop a body of creative work over time in an area of interest or passion. I am really good at working on something that I am passionate about. I am very passionate about architecture and sometimes when I am so passionate about something I overwork myself. I can definitely develop a body of creative work in architecture and it won’t take too long because I get hyper focused if I am passionate about something.
  2. I can get new ideas or reinterpret others’ ideas in novel ways. I can get new ideas quicker and develop more ideas when other ideas are mentioned that are different from mine. I am good at having my own ideas but when someone else talks about theirs, it completely changes my perspective on things. I start going down a whole new rabbit hole of new ideas just because someone else shared their thoughts. I had an interpretation of what I thought architecture was about, when I found a blog giving advice to young aspiring architects I have a whole new perception of it.

Goal for the future:

I can get new ideas or reinterpret others’ ideas in novel ways. I want to get better at recognizing other ideas before others tell me them. Usually I get so focused on one idea that all the other ones disappear and I often skip over them. I can work towards this goal by going over my projects or research assignments trying to find other ways to look at them.

Creative Writing 10

Core Competency communication

1. The ways I communicate at school differ from how I communicate in soccer. Soccer is my favourite sport and I am quite good at it. I have earned a lot of respect from others through the sport and made many friends. At my soccer practices and games I am a leader and I communicate with every single person on the field. I am also one of the youngest players on my team but that doesn’t stop me from being confident and communicate well with everyone. At school I am still confident but I don’t communicate as much. I find school doesn’t need the same communication that soccer does so I don’t try to force it. When communication is needed, for example, in a group setting, I step up and try to get everyone talking. The main difference is more communication is needed in my sport so thats why we communicate differently and more often.

2. Examples of where I can communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in my work when I relate to something. If I am writing an english paper that is about something I had just learned or something I don’t know much about; it is hard for me to communicate purposefully because I don’t connect to this topic or information given. If I have freedom in what I am going to write, I become much more creative, and confident in my writing. An in class example of this would be when we had writing assignments to do with the Indian horse book, I got a lower mark and felt like it was hard to write about it. It was also hard to make my writing interesting. Whereas when we had an assignment where we wrote our own short story about anything we wanted, I received a better grade, I felt more confident in my writing ability, and lastly I connected to the story and it was clear.

Domain and Range

Domain: x ∈ R (x belongs to the set of all real numbers)

The domain is the sets of input and output values in a graph also known as x and y

my graph is a one to one function and I know this because none of my x values repeat and none of my y values repeat.

Range: y > 0

Self Assessment:

  1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in multiple ways?

In this case the mathematical idea i represented in multiple ways is:

and I also showed this in graph form as-well.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

“x belongs to the set of all real numbers” this means that x is any number that is a real number and the mathematical vocabulary I used is “all real numbers”

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

I used numbers to show each question, I used bold headings, and I used picture. I also spaced different sections so it is clear which section is seperate.

Goal Setting

Communication goal: Some of my stretches are that I don’t talk enough in class and I plan to address this topic more this year. I will participate in class more by raising my hand to answer questions that are asked to the class. Hopefully by the end of the school year I will be able to communicate more with my classmates and overall feel more comfortable doing so.

Thinking goal: To get new ideas about something is a goal for me. For example, I want to be able to explore a topic or an issue from different view points, this will allow me to understand the topic/ issue better and overall get more research. I find whenever I am researching something I tend to focus on one viewpoint instead of opening my eyes to other pathways. If I learn to do this I will gain a lot more knowledge of what the topic is.

What I am proud of

I am proud of a paragraph write I did at the start of the year. This was an article we had to rewrite using quotes from the text.

Paragraph write:

Goals that seem crazy may be closer than you think

In the CBC kids news article “This teen can’t drive a car, but he can fly a plane” Lucien Distler is an interesting young man who decides to try something a little different. Lucien is a 14 year old who lives in Oakville, Ontario and is a very hardworking and diligent towards his interest in flying planes. In the article it states “One year later, he had earned his student pilot permit. It allows him to fly a small plane all by himself.” This shows that even if it may have been a spontaneous decision he still had to put in work and studying for a whole year for the piloting tests he had to take. Another trait to describe Lucien is being a risktaker. I chose this trait because if someone who doesn’t want to take any risks at all would never want to fly a plane all alone. Lucien says “It didn’t really hit [him] until [he] was on the ground, but [he] definitely was not stressed or anxious,” This shows he is comfortable and calm in a situation that very much could go sideways but the amount of risk of flying a plane by yourself shows he is a risk taker. Finally, a last trait that best describes Lucien is he is adept which means he can pick up and learn new skills quickly. Lucien’s dad said “Lucien tends to pick up things quickly, and this was true regarding both his flight training and theory classes as well. He actually scored higher in his written exam than [his father] did!” If this doesn’t show that he can learn skills quickly and adapt then I don’t know what does. After this year long of him working to get his piloting license it is clear that Lucien proved he is Hardworking, a risktaker, and lastly he picks up things very quickly (adept). Achieving ones goals comes with hard work, discipline and a little risk.

Curricular Competencies Reflection:

In this task I learned how to properly take quotes out of a article or website and properly put them into a summary. This developed my writing skills because now I can properly show facts and if I want to show my opinion I can back it up with quotes or text from the article. I also learned how to rephrase the title of the article by using the same words but finding synonyms and rewording the phrase.

Core Competencies Reflection:

ThinkingCC Critical/ Reflective thinking

I analyzed all the evidence I read in this article. I read it over twice to get a good full understanding of what happened then I had to make a decision on what I think the big picture of all this is. I finally landed on the fact that in the article you need a bit of discipline to stay on top of your goals but you also need to reach for the stars and try new things. For next time I think I should try and use more complex words. I am a decent writer but sometimes my word choice is too boring, for next time I will find new words and try them taking some risks along the way.
