Reflecting on My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

Some words that described my year are: Different, Exciting, and New. It was different because I previously went to Hillcrest, which was set up like an elementary school (classes in neighbouring rooms for Grades 7-8) to Centennial, with classes on other sides of the building! We also changed to the semester system, which meant that we would only have 4 “main” courses at a time. I am grateful for this because I would otherwise have an even heavier bag to walk to school with. It was exciting because I got to organize a chess club and work with other schools to organize events. I also joined the Math Club and participated in 4 math competitions, which is more than I had done in any other year.

My Favourite Website

https://phet.colorado.edu

I chose this website because I have found its simulations to be a good replacement to “actual” labs, since there is practically no risk of danger, and less limits, compared to a real lab. It teaches us the point, with activities, but makes it easier. Although nothing quite matches the real thing, I think these are a great replacement.

Favourite Video

I chose to share this video because it was a project that had our ideas put together, rather than separate and “one by one” in the presentation. I liked that this was more “group” work rather than “individual” work put together. In this project, we used a website to create pictures of a few characters from the book our video was about.

My Favourite Image

I chose this image because I made it as part of my first assignment for ADL. I think that I put it together in a way that wasn’t overly cluttered, but still got the point across. Out of the 3 “posters” I made, I like this one best because it stands out with the black and yellow stripes in the background.

My Favourite Quote

“You can’t erase your digital footprint, but you can take steps to safeguard it.”

I chose this quote because I think that some people believe that they can be completely invisible online. This is not the case, but making sure that you are “fine” with the information that is released, and who it is released to, is possible and is something that you should do.
