Personal/Social Competency Reflection
I think my experiences such as programs in school and extracurriculars influenced my choice of courses because I have used these opportunities to learn what I enjoy doing and what I’m good at. I think it’s important for me to try new things in school and other places so that I can learn about other things I enjoy doing. I should also try to be objective about my options, and try to avoid bias caused by past experiences, positive or negative. I think I might have been biased towards a couple of “institutions” I’ve been to before for different things (e.g. BCIT, SFU). At the same time, I should try to pursue the interests that I do develop from these experiences.
I am curious as to whether I will continue to intend to become a computer programmer in the future and about what might shift my perceptions over time. I can try to learn more about what this job is like to determine if I want to continue on this path. In addition to research, I can also try to get experience working in this field, through volunteering, “hobby” projects, or other means. If I choose to become a computer programmer, I should also decide what type of programming I should do.
Some short/long term goals for myself include getting post-secondary education and getting a job that is in a field that I enjoy (e.g. computer programming). My plan to achieve those plans is to get good grades in high school while still focusing more on what I’m interested in. I should also make sure that I’m taking the courses and extracurriculars that will be helpful in achieving my goals, as some requirements aren’t as obvious as others. I should also consider increasing my experience through different projects, and trying volunteering when I find opportunities to do so.
