Social Justice Core Competency Self Assessment

Thinking CC

My artifact is a letter to the Premier of Alberta that goes in depth about the negatives of bill 9 and the impact it could have on the mental health of LGBTQ+ but particularly trans youth.

While I was writing my letter, I experienced growth and progression in both thinking cc and communication cc. I demonstrated in depth research while learning about bill 9 and I had to go though articles with an unbiased opinion and ensure that the information I was collecting was correct and respectful. I feel that the biggest lesson I learned throughout this allyship project was how through opposing laws that you find unjust and challenging the legal system as a young person, you are learning how to fight injustice in a peaceful and educational way that presents concise facts and statistics that override someone’s opinion on a situation.

I showed my learning by being able to analyze my thinking and make judgements, throughout this project I was able to examine the statistics on trans youth mental health in Canada and make the judgment that bill 9 would result in a further increase of suicide rates based on the restrictions on expression. I was able to expand my learning by taking information given to me and make my own opinions as well as contrast the thinking of the Alberta Government and provide a different perspective on this pressing issue. Overall, I would enjoy going more in depth in terms of all social justice issues because when young people take legal action it leaves a massive impact.

Environmental Science 11/12 – Reflection

My Artifact

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the fact that I encouraged change in the design plan of our water filter when there were problems. I suggested that we add more mass into the filter so that water would be stuck in the filter for longer meaning more unnecessary debris were filtered out. I communicated this in a calm and respectful way that we should add more elements and I was able to improve the filter with this suggestion.

I show that I value feedback from others in my group by making the others feel heard and valued in the group. I listened to all ideas and ensured that nobody felt like their voice was going unheard or brushed off and took these ideas into account when creating the water filter. I added more sand when when of my group members suggested so and also removed marble at the request of a member to see what the effects would be.

By being kind and also on task in the classroom, I make a positive difference to my peers. I am a very nice person in the classroom and I am kind to everyone while also being on task and not distracting other from getting their work done. I am able to make connections with others and am always welcoming to questions that are asked by my peers and will answer them to the best of my abilities. I think this is very important in the classroom so we can learn and grow as a group.

A goal I have is to improve my willingness to collaborate with others instead of just working on my own. I have a tendency to zero in on my own work and not want to work with others. In the future I want to progress forward with my goal by putting myself into situations where I may be in a team environment instead of an individual one as I feel that I only gravitate to working on my own.

Spanish 11 Core Competency Reflection

Thinking Core Competency

This in class assignment where I had to use my critical thinking skills to demonstrate that I can form sentences in Spanish is a great example of how I can use my knowledge to put out work. During this assignment I took any challenges I had and developed a solution using my own resources. I ran into the issue of having to use the Por and para which is a topic I struggle with and in turn I used my own notes as well as the textbook to figure it out and develop my Spanish skills. In addition to these skills I used I was also able to use my past Spanish knowledge when it made sense to further elevate my paragraph. Overall I used my critical thinking skills in my in class write during many different occasions and further expanded my knowledge.

Transforming Parabolas

Equations

  1. f(x)=x2

2. y=2x2 + 4

3. y=1(x-15)2 -5

4. y=1(x+6)2-3

5. y=1(x-6)2-3

6. y=10(x-12)2-11

7. y=7/8(x+12)2-10

Describing My Equations

  1. Blue parent function

f(x)=x2

the equation f(x)=x2 displays a basic parabola where a=1, h=0, k=0, this mean that vertex would remain (0,0) because there are no vertical or horizontal shifts

2. Purple vertical shift up

y=2x2 + 4

In the equation y=2x2 + 4, the parabola is shifted upwards by 4 due to the fact that k=4 which is positive implying the parabola is shifted up. in this equation h=0 and a=2 so our vertex is (0,4).

3. Orange vertical shift down

y=1(x-15)2 -5

In the equation y=1(x-15)2 -5 , the parabola is shifted downwards due to the fact that k=-5 which is a a negative value. In this equation, a=1 and h=-15 meaning the vertex is (15,-5)

4. Red horizontal left shift

y=1(x+6)2-3

In the equation y=1(x+6)2-3, the parabola is shifted horizontally to the left because H=-6 which is a negative value therefore shifting it to the left. the a value is a=1 and the k value is k=-3, our vertex would be (-6,-3).

5. Green horizontal right shift

y=1(x-6)2-3

In the equation y=1(x-6)2-3, the parabola is shifted horizontally to the right because H=6 which is a positive value therefore shifting it to the right. the a value is a=1 and the k value is k=-3, our vertex would be (6,-3).

6. Red dotted line vertical stretch

y=10(x-12)2-11

In the equation y=10(x-12)2-11, the parabola is vertically stretched by 10 because a=10 which is a>0 therefore it is vertically stretched. Also we can see that the parabola is shifted horizontally to the right because H=12 which is a positive value therefore shifting it to the right. The k value is k=-11, which makes our vertex (12,-11).

7. Black line vertical compression

y=7/8(x+12)2-10

In the equation y=7/8(x+12)2-10, the parabola is vertically compressed by 7/8 because a=7/8 which is 0<a<1 therefore it is vertically compressed. Also we can see that the parabola is shifted horizontally to the left because H=-12 which is a negative value therefore shifting it to the left. The k value is k=-10 which makes our vertex (-12,-10).

Communication Core Competency Reflection

I can understand and share information in a clear, organized way. throughout this assignment, I was able to display my thinking both on the graph and in my descriptions of the equation in a way that made it easy to decipher my main points and was well thought out. I was able to show my learning in a way that is clear while also being detailed and demonstrated the ability to process information in an efficient way.

I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it to. During this assignment especially in my explanation of my equations, I used academic wording that conveyed my information in a professional and clear way. I wrote this assignment in a way that made sense considering it was for academic purposes as well as to be written with academic language.

Life Saving Measures

a. List and briefly explain 3 takeaways from the CPR, Naloxone and Substances presentations.

Three main take aways I took from listening to the three presentations were that helping someone and attempting to save their lives is better then standing to the side scared, that if you are going to drink alcohol its important to have a system in place and people you trust around you and that naloxone is accessible and easy to use. In our CPR training, we went over how the good Samaritan act protects you from being charged with anything while you are safely attempting to save someone’s life and this means that hopefully more people will step in and help during an emergency. During Nurse Marias presentation, she outlined the importance of staying with those you trust as you never know what might happen and it is crucial to have those around you who know and care for you so they are able to assist in the case of emergency. Lastly, during the naloxone presentation we were informed how naloxone is mostly free and it is in discreet packaging so it is simple to use and carry. I took away the fact that carrying this life saving medicine could be the difference between life and death.

b. Reflect on the impact these sessions/topics may have on your life.

As a high level athlete, frequent traveler and a citizen of Canada during an overdose crisis, the topics of drinking, vaping, overdosing and unsafe practices are often present in most spaces. even though I may not personally engage in most of these activities its still important to stay informed because you never know when an emergency may occur where you may have to step in. For example, I now feel ready and educated about how to assist someone in danger. Along with this I now know how to go to a party safely because of these presentations and I am able to recognize the signs that someone may be overdosing or at risk of an overdose which are very real situations that I could encounter at any given time. Our current world has many scenarios where you may be the only one available to help and its curtail to understand how you can save someone’s life.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

I am able to analyze the facts presented to me during these presentations and make the judgement that it is very important for youth in Canada to be aware of how to act around substances and those who may have taken them. During these three presentations, we were giving a lot of information on how to care for those who may be in need and also how to take care of ourselves around substances, I was able to learn how I can make the judgement that someone may be at risk and how to take the proper steps to ensure that that person gets the help they need and in the meantime how I can help them stay alive.

Unit Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication Core Competency

During this lab dissection, my partner and I had to figure out the most efficient way to work together and have an equal amount of work to do. We made decisions on where and how we would carefully take out the small parts of the earthworm like the aortic arches and made the decision that I would take out the seminal vesicles and then my partner would take out the hearts. We shared ideas while we did the partner test and agreed that we would help each other prepare for the assessment and we made sure that both of us knew where everything on the worm was and that one person was not carrying the weight of knowledge. We worked through issues like not being able to find more then four hears and agreed that we would show what we had rather then tear into the worm further and possibly destroying another internal structure. We made sure to have great communication and that none of us became confused, overall the only issues we faced were locating certain structures. In conclusion, my partner and I worked very well together and had an amazing sense of communication and I fell that I learned a lot from having to work together to achieve a goal.

English First Peoples 11 Identity Project: Self Reflection

Curricular Response

In this project, I displayed many strengths and weaknesses along the way. I thought that the way I was able to touch on important Indigenous issues and show how colonialism has effected the Metis people and the community as a whole. I displayed a great understanding of how we can move further along in the path of reconciliation and the pain that constant racism has caused. A weakness I displayed was in my explanation, in the future I would create a more in depth and detailed explanation of my poem and be sure to add more information on the points I made through the artistic style of poetry. I also touched on major issues regarding identity as many years of suppression of self and telling Indigenous peoples how to be and how to act have very serious and longlisting consequences.

Core Competency Reflection

Completing assignments in EFP11 is usually an enjoyable process as I prefer written based classes over arithmetic. I don’t find the assignments to be very challenging however they are stimulating and require much thought and I think that is important. I believe that the instructions that are given are clear and easy to follow and this makes doing assignments much less stressful. My favorite type of assignment to complete in EFP11 are creative based assignments where we have to learn about the subject then make a Canva poster talking about facts we have learned while also adding pictures that support what we are saying and making connection to Indigenous peoples and all the work they put in to their crafts and healing their community. Outside of EFP11, What helps me succeed in English is staying educated and informed on issues happening around Canada and in the world and making sure to always be sensitive and open to hearing things that Indigenous people and other minority groups have to say.

The Provincial Court

Reflect and share your personal experience of observing a provincial court case, highlighting what you learned and how it impacted your understanding of the judicial system.

How did the reality of the courtroom compare to your expectations?

The courtroom was similar to my expectations. My parents are lawyers so I grew up around the idea of what a courtroom actually looked like and I expected something similar to what I saw. I expected a room on the smaller side with the crown and defense on either side and the judge perched at the top and this is similar to what I ended up seeing. I expected the conversation in the court room to be professional and to the point and I found that this is what I mostly saw other then a few disagreements between the crown and defense. Overall I saw what I expected to see in the Surry Criminal Court and enjoyed my experience and learned valuable information.

What did you find most surprising or interesting?

I found the way lawyers conversed with one another to be a main point of interest. While conversing the Lawyers called one another “friend” as a way to keep things civil if disagreement came up and I enjoyed seeing how they question the person giving their testimony or each other. I also found it interesting when the judge came in and everyone bowed as a sign of respect showing the formality of court.

How did this experience change your understanding of the judicial process?

This experience changed the way I view the judicial process by showing in detail how cases are delt with in real time and how the timeline of events that are important to the case is so picked apart and questioned by the crown and the defense. My view on the way the judicial system treats those who testify was changed completely, the ones testifying are asked many questions and are pressed for answers with more force then I expected. Overall this experience helped me to better understand how the judicial system works and how the innerworkings function.

I can gather and combine new evidence with what I already know to develop reasoned conclusions, judgments, or plans. (based on your previous knowledge of the legal system and your newfound knowledge after attending multiple court cases)

I am able to discover new information as I actively learn more about the justice system and I have a great understanding of how the legal system works. I can combine the information that I already know with the things that I learn and form opinions about the things I am learning and create a judgement on the legal systems inner workings and how we view certain offences.

Core Competency Self Assesment

critical thinking and responsibility

This image shows the science lab that we completed involving acids and Bases

I demonstrated my critical thinking skills during this science lab. I used problem solving to help me get through the issues I encountered and I showed understanding of the material I was given. During the Lab I made sure to ask questions if I was confused and following along with that statement I also made a point to help others around me if they had questions that I was able to assist them with. Along with showing critical thinking skills I also demonstrated my ability to work with other to achieve a goal. I was able to work extremely well with my lab partner to use communication skills to complete the lab to the best of our abilities. Overall I showed both critical thinking and social responsibility during this science lab because of my ability to connect and ask questions as well as connect with others and work in a group.
