Social Justice Core Competency Self Assessment

Thinking CC

My artifact is a letter to the Premier of Alberta that goes in depth about the negatives of bill 9 and the impact it could have on the mental health of LGBTQ+ but particularly trans youth.

While I was writing my letter, I experienced growth and progression in both thinking cc and communication cc. I demonstrated in depth research while learning about bill 9 and I had to go though articles with an unbiased opinion and ensure that the information I was collecting was correct and respectful. I feel that the biggest lesson I learned throughout this allyship project was how through opposing laws that you find unjust and challenging the legal system as a young person, you are learning how to fight injustice in a peaceful and educational way that presents concise facts and statistics that override someone’s opinion on a situation.

I showed my learning by being able to analyze my thinking and make judgements, throughout this project I was able to examine the statistics on trans youth mental health in Canada and make the judgment that bill 9 would result in a further increase of suicide rates based on the restrictions on expression. I was able to expand my learning by taking information given to me and make my own opinions as well as contrast the thinking of the Alberta Government and provide a different perspective on this pressing issue. Overall, I would enjoy going more in depth in terms of all social justice issues because when young people take legal action it leaves a massive impact.

Transforming Parabolas

Equations

  1. f(x)=x2

2. y=2x2 + 4

3. y=1(x-15)2 -5

4. y=1(x+6)2-3

5. y=1(x-6)2-3

6. y=10(x-12)2-11

7. y=7/8(x+12)2-10

Describing My Equations

  1. Blue parent function

f(x)=x2

the equation f(x)=x2 displays a basic parabola where a=1, h=0, k=0, this mean that vertex would remain (0,0) because there are no vertical or horizontal shifts

2. Purple vertical shift up

y=2x2 + 4

In the equation y=2x2 + 4, the parabola is shifted upwards by 4 due to the fact that k=4 which is positive implying the parabola is shifted up. in this equation h=0 and a=2 so our vertex is (0,4).

3. Orange vertical shift down

y=1(x-15)2 -5

In the equation y=1(x-15)2 -5 , the parabola is shifted downwards due to the fact that k=-5 which is a a negative value. In this equation, a=1 and h=-15 meaning the vertex is (15,-5)

4. Red horizontal left shift

y=1(x+6)2-3

In the equation y=1(x+6)2-3, the parabola is shifted horizontally to the left because H=-6 which is a negative value therefore shifting it to the left. the a value is a=1 and the k value is k=-3, our vertex would be (-6,-3).

5. Green horizontal right shift

y=1(x-6)2-3

In the equation y=1(x-6)2-3, the parabola is shifted horizontally to the right because H=6 which is a positive value therefore shifting it to the right. the a value is a=1 and the k value is k=-3, our vertex would be (6,-3).

6. Red dotted line vertical stretch

y=10(x-12)2-11

In the equation y=10(x-12)2-11, the parabola is vertically stretched by 10 because a=10 which is a>0 therefore it is vertically stretched. Also we can see that the parabola is shifted horizontally to the right because H=12 which is a positive value therefore shifting it to the right. The k value is k=-11, which makes our vertex (12,-11).

7. Black line vertical compression

y=7/8(x+12)2-10

In the equation y=7/8(x+12)2-10, the parabola is vertically compressed by 7/8 because a=7/8 which is 0<a<1 therefore it is vertically compressed. Also we can see that the parabola is shifted horizontally to the left because H=-12 which is a negative value therefore shifting it to the left. The k value is k=-10 which makes our vertex (-12,-10).

Communication Core Competency Reflection

I can understand and share information in a clear, organized way. throughout this assignment, I was able to display my thinking both on the graph and in my descriptions of the equation in a way that made it easy to decipher my main points and was well thought out. I was able to show my learning in a way that is clear while also being detailed and demonstrated the ability to process information in an efficient way.

I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it to. During this assignment especially in my explanation of my equations, I used academic wording that conveyed my information in a professional and clear way. I wrote this assignment in a way that made sense considering it was for academic purposes as well as to be written with academic language.

Life Saving Measures

a. List and briefly explain 3 takeaways from the CPR, Naloxone and Substances presentations.

Three main take aways I took from listening to the three presentations were that helping someone and attempting to save their lives is better then standing to the side scared, that if you are going to drink alcohol its important to have a system in place and people you trust around you and that naloxone is accessible and easy to use. In our CPR training, we went over how the good Samaritan act protects you from being charged with anything while you are safely attempting to save someone’s life and this means that hopefully more people will step in and help during an emergency. During Nurse Marias presentation, she outlined the importance of staying with those you trust as you never know what might happen and it is crucial to have those around you who know and care for you so they are able to assist in the case of emergency. Lastly, during the naloxone presentation we were informed how naloxone is mostly free and it is in discreet packaging so it is simple to use and carry. I took away the fact that carrying this life saving medicine could be the difference between life and death.

b. Reflect on the impact these sessions/topics may have on your life.

As a high level athlete, frequent traveler and a citizen of Canada during an overdose crisis, the topics of drinking, vaping, overdosing and unsafe practices are often present in most spaces. even though I may not personally engage in most of these activities its still important to stay informed because you never know when an emergency may occur where you may have to step in. For example, I now feel ready and educated about how to assist someone in danger. Along with this I now know how to go to a party safely because of these presentations and I am able to recognize the signs that someone may be overdosing or at risk of an overdose which are very real situations that I could encounter at any given time. Our current world has many scenarios where you may be the only one available to help and its curtail to understand how you can save someone’s life.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

I am able to analyze the facts presented to me during these presentations and make the judgement that it is very important for youth in Canada to be aware of how to act around substances and those who may have taken them. During these three presentations, we were giving a lot of information on how to care for those who may be in need and also how to take care of ourselves around substances, I was able to learn how I can make the judgement that someone may be at risk and how to take the proper steps to ensure that that person gets the help they need and in the meantime how I can help them stay alive.
