I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others. An example of where I built upon someone else ideas is… The over arching idea for the script came from one of my partners before all three of us fleshed it out together. One specific idea I remember being mine is the Cook being interrupted in the middle of his spiel about how to cook the steak and fries.
I can work with others to achieve a goal. I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by… This script. Rather than all of us simply writing our parts and having done with it, we worked together brainstorming, writing, working on grammar, to produce the final product. The script was partially written by all of us, but even the parts we didn’t write personally we were still involved in and collaborating on.
I can describe how the concept of defamiliarization relates to the experience I had where I broke my finger in my work above. The shock and adrenaline that happened during this event made it seem very similar to what Mr. Wallace described as an example of defamiliarization. Nothing in that moment seemed real.
I appreciate feedback on the structure of my writing and prefer it comes in the form of either a face to face conversation or a detailed paragraph of what I did wrong and how to fix it for my next piece. Mr. Wallace’s feedback on my defamiliarization piece was only partially helpful because I didn’t understand parts of the feedback and how to apply it to my Parallel Universion writing.
I solved problems by talking to people who might be able to help me and by trying to imagine how the instructions would work out in my head. Being able to construct things in 3D in your brain is a very helpful skill. If I did it again I would make sure to not rush with the hems. I did rush a little bit and they didn’t come out as well as they could have.
This year I realized I learn best with a specific set of instructions for projects. I learned that rough “Do something about this, it can be whatever” instructions do absolutely nothing for me. I’m unlikely to end up producing a project up to the standards set if there isn’t a guideline for me to follow. I enjoyed science the most this year and am looking forward to the end of year frog dissection. I’m most proud of the ADL English assignment I completed which is below.
Definitely not my favourite website but it is one of the few I can remember using this year. Its also one of the only ones I still have easy access to so it makes sense for me to choose it.
My Favourite Video
This is the video I made for the English ADL project. It didn’t really help with my learning this year nor is it my favourite video but it was a part of it, I guess. I am sort of proud of managing to make it despite the fact that it was taught to me by a step by step process.
My Favourite Image
I used this picture in the English ADL project and I really like it. Since I’m not sure what constitutes as a picture I connected with I chose this one.
My Favourite Quote
All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances. – William Shakespeare
It might be overused but I still like it. It certainly feels appropriate for reflecting on school. I feel it represents my life right now.
Shakespeare, William, and William Shakespeare. As You like It. Edited by Alan Brissenden, Reissued as an Oxford world’s classics paperback, Oxford Univ. Press, 1998.
Year 3 – (56,975 + 10,000) x 1.075 = 71,998.13 + 10,000 = 81,998.13
Total = 45,254.64 + 81,998.13 = 127,252.77
OR
Stock Market
Year 3 – (56,975 + 10,000) x 0.913 = 61,148.18 + 10,000 = 71,148.18
Total = 45,254.64 + 71,148.18 = 116,402.82
If the stock market had three good years. This solution will produce more than enough money for the down payment. However if it goes bad even once the money will end up at least 4,000 short. My risk tolerance is mostly medium so this might not actually be the best option for me but I think that the amount missing isn’t very differential so I’d risk it. There might be better options but this one works because there’s a buffer if all goes well and it isn’t a disaster if it doesn’t.
The group work was fine. I believe it went well and my contributions to the group were a few different plan options and writing everything down. The rest of the group also contributed other options and did most of the math for me. We ended up going with the original idea our group had and didn’t do the math for any of the other ones. I would say our group work was a 3.
Core Competency Reflection
I can work with others to achieve a goal.
Our group work went smoothly. There was no discord between the members. All of us contributed, there was no one person doing all the work. As such no one was left out either.
I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I can do my share.
I contributed to our group work. I was a part of the discussion happening among my teammates. This is actually somewhat rare, I don’t like talking to people.
I can reflect on my thinking.
I recognize what was probably going through my head at the time. However right now I’m also aware that this solution is not the best, both in general terms and in the terms of my own risk tolerance. Finding a way to ensure the correct amount of money was there no matter what would have been best for me.
I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself.
May not entirely be relevant, but I am proud of myself for finally getting this project done. I’m proud I’ve managed to get it complete and no longer have to worry about it anymore. Even if it was very, very late.
I learned how to use all the machines correctly and safely. I learned how to turn a block on the lathes and what some of the lathe tools are used for. I learned how to breakout a piece of wood. I learned how to not get my fingers cut off and, strangely enough, how to ask for help.
Turning blocks on the lathe was a challenge for me as I found it a bit hard to to get the wood down to a consistent size. I eventually got better at making it even all across but it was a struggle for quite a while. Another challenge was using the band-saw. It was hard for me to control were I wanted the to wood to go and that lead to a few wobbly and uneven cuts.
Even though I had a lot of trouble on the lathe with the salt and pepper shakers I had a lot of success, and fun, with the spinning tops. That was also my favourite project. My top spun evenly for about 20 seconds when I tried it. Plus, I think it looks good.
Meeting Expectations/Assessment
I did meet my expectations. I might have even surpassed them as I really wasn’t confident about wood when I started it this year. No injuries were sustained, I believe my projects look good and are three of them are completed with the fourth not far behind. I used my time efficiently for the most part and stayed out of other peoples way.
I believe I also met Mr. Pope’s expectations especially if I finish my salt and pepper shakers in the rest of this class.
In Metal
In metal I will do my best to not waste anymore of my time. There were several instances during wood shop were I could have been doing something but wasn’t. I think if I had used that time on my projects I could have been finished all of them already instead of having to cut it down to the wire on time so I will do my best to rectify that in the metal shop.
I manage stress by ignoring it in favour of reading for as long as possible. I also use baking, cooking and sewing as distractions from it but the end result is the same. This does actually serve a purpose though as I use that time to relax and step away from whatever was stressing me out. Technology is both a cause and a coping mechanism. TV shows and movies help me relax just as much as books do, plus I can read on my phone. I do, however, play some video games and that can cause me stress at times. This year though technology has been more of a help than a hindrance since I’ve been using it to unwind after school. I no longer play games so that stress factor has been eliminated.
Core Competency
I find it easy to be part of a group.
I’m not as good at open communication as I’d like which can lead to additional stress when working with a group. I am trying to find more ways to communicate well with others outside of my close friend group. I am fine talking with my friends though.
I am kind to others, and support others when they need it.
Despite not being as comfortable with others as I might like I always try my best to be polite to them. I also will always offer my help or even advice if asked. But if they expect me to take the initiative in that regard they are out of luck.
I can explain when something is unfair and advocate for others.
On of my favourite things to do is argue and I’m more than willing to do it for others as well myself. Although arguing and advocating are not quite the same thing I find them similar enough as not to be ans issue. I sometimes don’t do as much as I feel I should but I’m working on it.
I figured out how my character looked by reading over the descriptions of her on pages 54 , 80 and 81. I combined the three descriptions to figure roughly what my character looked like. “Her outward appearance was sun-bronzed skin.” on pg. 81 and “But Nausicaa was blond and sun-tanned gold.” of pg. 54. I choose the plot points based on how much the characters learned. There were a few fights I left completely out of the story because they were just fights, not anything with any important information about the plot. To figure out the setting I looked at the landmarks they mention as there are a few times when they teleport and its not explicitly clear were they end up. I also looked at the technology and references they made to figure out the year it was set in as that was not clearly stated either. “She nursed her brightly coloured drink and passed the time on her massive teal smartphone.” pg. 301. The word “mood” in literature refers to the general theme of the story. Meaning whether its a dark and depressing story or a light hearted one that would be considered the mood. I choose the song for my story because the overall events seemed quite somber and dark even if the characters don’t act like it.
Core Competency Reflection
I use evidence to make judgments or decisions as demonstrated in this…
This is demonstrated in my building of the characters avatar. I had descriptions of one person from 3 others. Two in the beginning and another in the middle of the book. With three different people describing one, all from different perspectives it was necessary to choose what was common in all three and build my character from that.
I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by…
Almost the same thing as the first reflection but not limited to character descriptions. As a book with five different perspectives I needed to decide which one held the most relevant information in the situation. I couldn’t include all but each one had something a little different about it. I also needed to decide which of the characters to introduce in my movie. I ended up choosing the two in Toronto as they had most of the relevant information between them.
When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…
If I got stuck in the middle of the movie I would try reading a few pages ahead in my book. If I was tired of my book as well than I would switch to reading a different one on my phone to re-focus after 5 min. I would be able to focus much better.
Internet safety is important to protect your information. You don’t want anything personal online as it can be found and used for a multitude of things. Any data you share can be tracked by law enforcement, marketers and others who may not have your best interests at heart. Some things not to do are to share your location with online sites. Make sure not to share personal information on public Wi-Fi. This includes guest Wi-Fi at restaurants and stores. While this doesn’t have a huge affect on privacy a good thing to note is to not post while you’re angry. There is a good chance you’ll regret it later and you might not be able to take back what you said. Remember, your digital footprint is how others online will view you will view you. Make sure to check your privacy settings when on social media. You can also use incognito mode when browsing to ensure your browser history is not recorded. Try searching for yourself every now and then to ensure that you know what’s being said about you online. If you really want to get committed to this, you can buy a VPN to ensure your data stays safe.

Personal/Social Reflection
One of the biggest ways I contribute to the online community is by doing nothing. I have no social media accounts and don’t plan to until I’ve settled at school. Since I’m not online I can judge a person by who they are in person and there is no risk of hurtful comments. By putting nothing online, be it about myself or others, I am hurting no one and may even be helping myself in the future. Including the fact that without the distractions of social media I am usually able to focus on my work much more since there is no temptation of scrolling. I do want to get on their eventually so I can maintain closer contact with some of my friends. I also know I have been influenced by things online and on social media despite trying to stay away from it.
