Evidence
Yes. I do think that what the Canadian government did is genocide. They killed, mentally broke, inflicted pain, and intended to prevent birth to all these children, aswell as forcibly moved the children from their homes to go to these schools where their children sometimes never came home. They did all these by killing thousands, some being beat to death, thrown in fires, and some mentally broken so bad they would commit suicide. They were stripped of religion, weren’t treated for illness, sterilized meaning they cant get pregnant, and were separated by gender meaning they cant learn to talk to the opposite gender in their childhoods.
Ethical Judgement
I believe that everything about the Residential Schools system was unfair and not right to our Indigenous peoples. When they would take children away from their homes, it left a toll on their parents and ancestors that their own children may never return home, and if they do, they will feel like a complete stranger to their own family and miss their whole childhood of learning their Indigenous culture and traditions. It’s not like the Residential Schools were beautiful schools with amazing teachers and the best of the best food. These schools had limited ventilation, which meant disease comes very easily, also gross and disgusting food that was limited and usually the same. It was also not fair that these children died in these schools for being born in the ‘wrong’ culture according the the Canadian government, and that they tried to cover most of these deaths up is the most disgusting part of all.
