Vocal Jazz Reflection

During intense vocal jazz rehearsals and high-pressure performances, I am confident in my ability to advocate for myself, as demonstrated when I have been jumpscared by the possibility of having learned my part wrong, but after enough practice I know that what I am singing is correct. I am able to advocate for myself when I feel that a part is out of my range and asked if I can sing an alternative harmony or sing an octave up to ensure that the performance is not at the expense of my vocal health.

Within the vocal jazz community, I recognize my potential as a jazz vocal leader, and this became evident when I have led every sectional that I’ve attended, given constructive criticism and corrected wrong parts while singing. I always check up on the others in my section and ask if they are comfortable with the current part before we move on, as well as play any part on the piano if we are confused. I also try to keep myself and the others in my section accountable for making sure that we practice and remember our part.

I actively identify opportunities to lead within the vocal jazz ensemble and make a positive impact, as seen when I have created individual focus tracks for many of our songs, such as Like What You Got, Glow, Hold Me, and the tenor track for Like Someone in Love. Although creating these tracks is a long and tedious process, it really helped the ensemble as a whole to learn our parts faster and sped up the process. We still could have finished all of these songs with a similar quality without the tracks, but I believe that if we didn’t have them, the process would have been a lot slower.

Choir Reflection

Personal/Social Reflection

In my journey as a choir member, I have found that reflecting on my personal experiences, such as past performances, enhances my well-being, particularly when I look at older performances and compare them to our most recent ones, as I become proud when I see how much we’ve grown as an ensemble and a family. I also like looking back at our older performances to see what mistakes were made so that I am aware of what I can improve on for future performances.

When facing challenging pieces or demanding rehearsals, I often look back on my personal journey in choir as a source of inspiration and resilience, especially when we learned more difficult pieces such as Sparrow’s Jig or Your One and Only Life. These songs were a lot harder than our other songs and I found it a bit more difficult to memorize them. However, I would listen to the tracks in my spare time and also practice as much as I could because I enjoyed both songs and wanted to perform to the best of my ability.

I prioritize my vocal well-being by consistently sustaining a healthy and balanced vocal lifestyle, which includes not death-metal screaming, but also making sure that I always drink room temperature water and avoiding foods that could irritate my throat when a performance is fast approaching. I also try not to raise my voice as much as possible, but when I do, I make sure to rest my voice afterwards.

Personal/Social Competency Reflection

In my journey as a vocal jazz ensemble member, I have found that reflecting on my personal experiences, such as past jazz performances, enhances my well-being, particularly when I review past concert videos. I listen over these videos multiple times to catch any moments that I thought could be improved. I also listen to the overall sound of the group to see how well we blend. I know that the sound can differ based on where an audience member is sitting, but this helps me know whether I’m being too loud or quiet.

As a vocal jazz ensemble member, I consistently take ownership of my vocal goals, improvisational learning, and behavior, as seen in my dedication to joining Jazz Club, where I am given the opportunity to practice my improvisational skills with others who are just as interested in jazz. I enjoy working in an group as I get to see others show off their skills and also learn extra jazz theory from the leaders of the club. During our practices, I also get the opportunity to practice soloing over the band, which has greatly helped me develop my improvisational skills.

Within the vocal jazz community, I recognize my potential as a jazz vocal leader, and this became evident when I began making practice tracks for Vocal Jazz. To maximize our efficiency, we use practice tracks to individually learn our parts, but sometimes individual practice tracks aren’t available, so I manually copy our sheet music into MuseScore and then export the audios individually for each vocal part. These tracks often take multiple hours to create an export, but I enjoy doing them as they help the overall group. I want to continue making tracks and finding ways to be helpful and a leader within my community.

Personal/Social Competency Reflection

In my journey as a choir member, I have found that reflecting on my personal experiences, such as past performances, enhances my well-being, particularly when I am stressed about our upcoming performances. I find myself getting extremely nervous and worrying about not being perfect on stage, but I combat this by looking back at my past performances. Instead of only worrying about being perfect for the audience, I look at each performance as a showcase of my growth as a vocalist and performer. I can be proud of how far I’ve come in the past few years and the fact that I will continue to improve as time goes on. So rather than wanting to be perfect, I focus on doing the best that I can do in the moment.

I prioritize my vocal well-being by consistently sustaining a healthy and balanced vocal lifestyle, which includes not raising my voice excessively. I am already not great at yelling, but I don’t make it a habit to raise my voice too much as I know this can damage my voice. I also constantly hydrate myself with room temperature water, and close to a concert, I try to avoid foods that could potentially affect my ability to sing, such as sugary or greasy foods, and dairy. When my voice isn’t at its best, I always make sure to take it easy as to not strain my voice.

Within the choir community, I recognize my potential as a leader, and this became evident through the various times I’ve given advice to my peers. Before our performances for the last two concerts, I always give a pep talk to the choir to calm any nerves, as well as express my gratitude for the synergy of our group, even if I’m also nervous. I can recognize and attempt to mend potentially harmful thought processes and behaviours amongst the group. This was evident after I suggested a mindset shift within the choir when we were faced with situations that weren’t completely present. I believe that it’s important to recognize one’s privilege and approach situations with a “I get to do this task that some people don’t have the opportunity to participate in”. I hope to continue being a positive role model for my peers and learn alongside them.

My 2022/2023 Year

Something that went well this year was my first time starting the Cent Show. Although we had a rough start, we improved throughout the year and took all the criticism we gave so that we could make a good news show.

This year, the music ensembles were also able to perform at Lafarge Lake. The performance was a success as both groups did very well and we got a warm reception from the audience, as well as an article published about us in the Tricity News.

I also took part in this year’s musical Rock of Ages. Our shows went really well and we sold a lot of tickets, even selling out our closing night. It was a really fun experience and I was happy to work with so many amazing people.

Areas to Improve

GoalsAction Plans
I want to continue to run the Cent Show next year
and keep on improving my camera presence.
I’ll continue to cohost the Cent Show next year
so that I can get the practice and improve,
listening to any feedback and constructive
criticism.
I want to maintain my current 4.0 GPA. I commit appropriate amounts of time to each
class I take so that my grades don’t fall. I am going
to continue to use various study techniques and
methods so that my marks remain where they are,
and always strive to be better.

Minecraft – Energy Transfer & Transformation

Communication:

When my group was deciding how we wanted to model energy transfer and transformation, I was able to communicate my ideas to my groupmates and give suggestions to improve the ideas that we created. I gave my own ideas, such as creating a rollercoaster, and communicated how a rollercoaster would be a good model for gravitational potential energy and mechanical kinetic energy. I also communicated with my groupmates when I was confused about certain topics or was stuck on ideas for what to build, and they were more than helpful in communicating their own ideas and giving suggestions so that we were all on the same page.

Thinking:

Our group had to do a lot of thinking before we figured out what we wanted to do for our Minecraft project. When we began the project, we were completely stuck on how to model our chosen renewable energy source, geothermal energy. However, once we got over this initial hurdle, other things began to come easier to us and it became much easier to figure out what we wanted to do. I used my critical and creative thinking skills when figuring out how to model the transformation of electrical potential energy to radiant energy through lamps and wires in a house.

Personal & Social Responsibility:

I demonstrated personal and social responsibility when discussing with my groupmates about the timeline to complete our project. We designated times outside of class to meet and work on our projects, and I kept up my own part in the group by ensuring that I was on time to these meetings with the right materials and a positive mindset so that our project wouldn’t suffer due to an inability to work together. I also made sure to take extra time to work on things that I promised I would do, such as writing a script based off of the notes that we created together that we would say during our video.

Core Competency Self Assessment

Social Awareness and Responsibility- Musical Theatre

Which aspects of creating the show did you enjoy the most? Why?

The aspect that I enjoyed the most was surprisingly dancing. I’ve done a little bit of dancing in the past but had next to no experience, so being able to be around people of different skill levels in dancing really helped when I was feeling worried about my own dancing, as everyone was improving together. The satisfaction of finishing a number after days of practice was also a very gratifying feeling.

Which aspects of creating the show did you not enjoy? Why?

The aspect that I enjoyed the least was learning vocals, especially at the beginning of the school year, as I found it very difficult to follow along at times which caused a lot of frustration.

What new skills did you learn during the production?

The biggest skill that I learned during the production was how to act, as I had never done any type of serious acting before being in The Play. It was amazing seeing others transform into completely different people for the show and I learned a lot about how everybody on stage contributed to the scene, not just those at the forefront of the action.

If you had the chance to do it over again, is there anything you would do differently?

If I had the chance, I wouldn’t want to change anything. Despite all the stress that the show caused all of us, I gained many new skills and became friends with people who I probably wouldn’t have ever talked to if it weren’t for theatre. Things that could have gone better just became learning experiences for what to improve in the future and fun memories.
