Vocal Jazz Reflection

During intense vocal jazz rehearsals and high-pressure performances, I am confident in my ability to advocate for myself, as demonstrated when I have been jumpscared by the possibility of having learned my part wrong, but after enough practice I know that what I am singing is correct. I am able to advocate for myself when I feel that a part is out of my range and asked if I can sing an alternative harmony or sing an octave up to ensure that the performance is not at the expense of my vocal health.

Within the vocal jazz community, I recognize my potential as a jazz vocal leader, and this became evident when I have led every sectional that I’ve attended, given constructive criticism and corrected wrong parts while singing. I always check up on the others in my section and ask if they are comfortable with the current part before we move on, as well as play any part on the piano if we are confused. I also try to keep myself and the others in my section accountable for making sure that we practice and remember our part.

I actively identify opportunities to lead within the vocal jazz ensemble and make a positive impact, as seen when I have created individual focus tracks for many of our songs, such as Like What You Got, Glow, Hold Me, and the tenor track for Like Someone in Love. Although creating these tracks is a long and tedious process, it really helped the ensemble as a whole to learn our parts faster and sped up the process. We still could have finished all of these songs with a similar quality without the tracks, but I believe that if we didn’t have them, the process would have been a lot slower.

Choir Reflection

Personal/Social Reflection

In my journey as a choir member, I have found that reflecting on my personal experiences, such as past performances, enhances my well-being, particularly when I look at older performances and compare them to our most recent ones, as I become proud when I see how much we’ve grown as an ensemble and a family. I also like looking back at our older performances to see what mistakes were made so that I am aware of what I can improve on for future performances.

When facing challenging pieces or demanding rehearsals, I often look back on my personal journey in choir as a source of inspiration and resilience, especially when we learned more difficult pieces such as Sparrow’s Jig or Your One and Only Life. These songs were a lot harder than our other songs and I found it a bit more difficult to memorize them. However, I would listen to the tracks in my spare time and also practice as much as I could because I enjoyed both songs and wanted to perform to the best of my ability.

I prioritize my vocal well-being by consistently sustaining a healthy and balanced vocal lifestyle, which includes not death-metal screaming, but also making sure that I always drink room temperature water and avoiding foods that could irritate my throat when a performance is fast approaching. I also try not to raise my voice as much as possible, but when I do, I make sure to rest my voice afterwards.

Personal/Social Competency Reflection

In my journey as a choir member, I have found that reflecting on my personal experiences, such as past performances, enhances my well-being, particularly when I am stressed about our upcoming performances. I find myself getting extremely nervous and worrying about not being perfect on stage, but I combat this by looking back at my past performances. Instead of only worrying about being perfect for the audience, I look at each performance as a showcase of my growth as a vocalist and performer. I can be proud of how far I’ve come in the past few years and the fact that I will continue to improve as time goes on. So rather than wanting to be perfect, I focus on doing the best that I can do in the moment.

I prioritize my vocal well-being by consistently sustaining a healthy and balanced vocal lifestyle, which includes not raising my voice excessively. I am already not great at yelling, but I don’t make it a habit to raise my voice too much as I know this can damage my voice. I also constantly hydrate myself with room temperature water, and close to a concert, I try to avoid foods that could potentially affect my ability to sing, such as sugary or greasy foods, and dairy. When my voice isn’t at its best, I always make sure to take it easy as to not strain my voice.

Within the choir community, I recognize my potential as a leader, and this became evident through the various times I’ve given advice to my peers. Before our performances for the last two concerts, I always give a pep talk to the choir to calm any nerves, as well as express my gratitude for the synergy of our group, even if I’m also nervous. I can recognize and attempt to mend potentially harmful thought processes and behaviours amongst the group. This was evident after I suggested a mindset shift within the choir when we were faced with situations that weren’t completely present. I believe that it’s important to recognize one’s privilege and approach situations with a “I get to do this task that some people don’t have the opportunity to participate in”. I hope to continue being a positive role model for my peers and learn alongside them.
