In film I was required to communicate a lot. Through editing we had to communicate stories. I also had to communicate with other people a large amount of the time. I had to plan projects with partners and communicate ideas and visions for the final project. There was a lot of group work throughout the course and communication was definitely a large part of it.
I believe that the greatest strength of this paragraph is using evidence to effectively prove my point and answer the question. I think that I did a very good job of drawing my explanations back to my main point by using reoccurring words. Another thing I think I did well was using good transition words to help the whole paragraph flow smoothly. By using these transition words properly I can let readers digest the ideas presented in the paragraph without being bothered by jumpy reading or startling sentence breaks. I also worked hard to properly and fully explain the points I put foreword.
Core Competency Self-Assessment
Think about and describe how your experience writing Literary paragraph 1 was different or similar to writing this paragraph. Was one easier? More difficult? Can you explain why?
The “Fido” paragraph was definitely much easier to write. I wrote literary paragraphs last year, but I was rusty so the practice was very valuable for paragraph #2. I also think that #2 was much easier because I understood the point I was trying to put foreword much better. I knew what I was writing in the first paragraph but I more clearly could put together my thoughts into explainable ideas the second time. The feedback given after writing the first literary paragraph was also very helpful when trying to improve upon the first and put together my ideas in the second one. I could more easily understand where to add transition words and a few other points that had to be improved upon.
For future plans I don’t have a specific idea of what job I want but I do think I want a job that deals with biology, chemistry or math. Last year in science I did enjoy learning about those two areas of science and I generally like learning about the world around me and who things work because sometimes science can be mind boggling and I think a job where I am always learning is a good path for me.
I also like theatre a lot, I included it in both my passion and future plans because in my future I want to be able to buy myself tickets to theatre and go see plays and musicals because I really enjoy seeing live performances
VALUES
In the values section I decided to include school. I really meant education. I don’t think school is the only place where education is important and, despite sounding pretentious, I do think people are right when they say you never stop learning.
I included honesty and kindness as well because I think they are both important. I did include “given and received” because I think it is important that honesty and trust goes both ways between two people.
PASSIONS
I put reading as a passion because in recent months I have started reading a lot after not reading very much for years. I read before I go to bed and I think it’s a healthy habit I’ve picked up.
I have softball because I’ve done the sport for a very long time and the team environment has always been super nice. In passions I also included dancing and music because music is a very frequent part of my life. I listen to it in my free time, I use it to boost my mood or to take my mind off stressful things I think that it is just an important part of my life.
Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include…
When considering what responsibilities to give to others in any group project I usually consider how hard they work. Usually I can tell how well people are going to be able to complete tasks in a timely manner. I also consider how much I can afford to do while still having time for other classes and free time. I generally tend to divide tasks between people fairly and equally but I do often end up giving myself at least a bit more work to make sure it gets done and some people get less work to make sure they can complete it. Sometimes people are better at one thing than another so I try to give people tasks they will hopefully thrive with.
One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is…/When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…
I used two prompts for this answer because my answer applies to both. To stimulate my imagination and/or boost my mood to refocus I listen to music. Specifically to boost my mood I make sure the music is upbeat. It makes me feel better and puts me in the mood to get stuff done. I’m even listening to music while writing this. It can occasionally be distracting but it helps to make the work at least a bit enjoyable when doing something tough. Being in a good mood also makes it easier for me to think and use my imagination for more creative work.
What are you strengths and stretches?
In terms of communication one of my main strengths is that I am not usually scared to speak in front of others. This allows me to feel good about sharing my ideas. I am good at listening but I will admit one of my weaknesses can be appreciating ideas. Though I listen and do appreciate when others have ideas to share I am not always as open as I should be to using an idea that I do not think is the correct option even if others think it is.
During the project I faced some challenges making the foreground loop. I eventually overcame them and am very proud of the finished project. I think my favorite part of the finished piece is the clouds in the back. Although they are stationary I am very proud of their cartoonish look and think they add to the overall effect of the animation. I added them very close to the eventual rendering and think they make a good addition. I also like the trees in the background. I gave them all a gradient and think it gives some needed dimension to such a fun and cartoony piece. I think I did a very good job of making the animation clean and interesting to watch because of the subtleties that many would miss upon first inspection.
Some short/ long term goals with my digital spaces include… [spending less time online and spend the time I am online in a more productive manner], and my plan to achieve them is… [find things I enjoy to do instead.] (include where you might seek help from others)
Some short/ long term goals with my digital spaces include spending less time online and spend the time I am online in a more productive manner, and my plan to achieve them is find things I enjoy to do instead. I have a bullet journal and I would love to spend more time working on it instead of scrolling mindlessly. I could go on bike rides, or walks. Something outside to get some fresh air.
My values around [my personal privacy] inform my decisions about… [what I share online.]
My values around my personal privacy inform my decisions about what I share online. Based on this project and others like it I have learned that personal privacy is very important. I myself am not very open on line generally but after learning about the stuff that stays around I am definitely more careful than before about what I share, even to people I know.
By doing… [being respectful online], I make a positive difference to my peers.
By being respectful online, I make a positive difference to my peers. I don’t screenshot people’s Instagram stories or their snaps etc. to make sure that I am making at least a small difference in their privacy and security online.
Many parallels can be drawn between the book ‘In the Heat of the Night’ and Racism in Canada. One obvious parallel is the belief that people who are part of visible minorities are “below” Caucasian people. I, as a white person, have had the privilege of not being treated like Virgil and believed to be stupid or below anyone in this way. I can however connect it to my experience of being a girl. As a girl I have been treated as weaker than the boys or less “sporty.” Though racism is much worse than a problem like that and people of minorities can sometimes be paid less because people feel their work is of less value. Additionally, people in minorities are mistreated, and called slurs in their daily life. I personally can only imagine what it would be like to be bothered, going about my day by someone who just didn’t like the way I looked. Friends of mine though, have been bullied for these exact reasons. They have been called names by people they went to school with. To add to such a touchy topic, people who are part of minorities are often assumed to have done something wrong or falsely accused of crimes. This is clearly a parallel to how Virgil is treated at the beginning of the book. He is assumed to have committed the murder and, adding to the last point, called names. The only reason Sam has for his behavior is because Virgil is black. This behavior happens in real life and although it has never happened to me all you have to do is turn on the news and find a perfect example. ‘In the Heat of the Night’ and its parallels to Racism around me has made me more aware of small things in life I otherwise would have not fully noticed.
I have a lot of strengths relating to drama. I have been in school productions since I was in grade 2 so I really love performing. I also like writing so I am very happy that I got a chance to write a script with my friend. This also allowed me to collaborate and work together on a very fun project. I was able to work with my personal strengths and got a chance to attempt to learn an accent which was a very interesting and new experience for me.
In this story it was very important to look back throughout the chapters we’ve read to check for information. Often you had to make an educated guess on pieces of information about your character. In his project I learned how knowing or figuring out the setting of a story can be very important in your understanding of the material and themes presented. The mood is also affected by the setting of the book. Mood is a word to describe the tone and emotional impact the story is evoking. My group personally decided our movie should have a more dramatic tone because of the subject matter and the internal battle within our character, Sam. Overall, looking back on information presented throughout the book allowed us to make educated guesses to better our understanding of the mood and themes in the story.
Core Competency Reflection
Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include… I often decide if I think they will be able to actually finish their portion. If not I would divide work to give them a smaller part or an easier task to complete. I also consider people’s skills such as writing or drawing. I will even try to adjust our project so a skill could be used instead of giving that person a job they will struggle completing.
I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by… My techniques in helping my group write the timeline of our PowerPoint/movie on ‘In the Heat of the Night’. I suggested we write out all the important points for our character then choose points to remove, keep, or elaborate on. We did this and ended up with a concise, reasonable length story.
An example of an idea I developed that was new to my peers is… An idea I came up with in Drama class. We were tasked with mashing two fairy-tale stories together into a small skit to perform the same day. My group first got together and were unsure at first about which two fairy-tales to use. I put forward an idea and although we did not end up using it, the rest of my group felt more confident about putting forward ideas or tweaking mine to create more ideas and we put together a great skit.
When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I… I often take a few deep breaths. Depending on the situation I will maybe take a quick break or take a sip of water which is often a good way to calm myself down and focus on any tasks that require completion or just give myself an emotional boost.
A family of 4 needs a meal plan that works with their weekly activities. They want everyone to cook at least once every week. They want everything to be accounted for including the cook, what they are eating, the portion of the recipe, and what time they will eat.

New Recipe – Chicken Satay Noodles
This recipe is somewhat healthy, and not too high in calories.
Each serving provides 747 kcal, 46g protein, 84g carbohydrates (of which 14g sugars), 23g fat (of which 9g saturates), 10g fiber and 2.7g salt.
Justification
Monday
Parent A gets home at 4:30 meaning they have some time before cooking at 4:40.
Beef and Spinach Lasagna is one of the longer recipes, but it can be completed with more than enough time to spare, giving parent B enough time to eat and go the Fitness Class at 7:00.
Beef and Spinach Lasagna makes 12 servings with the normal recipe. To make a proper number of servings so no food goes to waste, Parent A needs to make one third of the recipe.
Tuesday
Teen 1 gets home at 3:30 with Teen 2. Teen 2 has to get ready for soccer so Teen 1 will cook.
They will start cooking at 6:00 so that both parents can make sure nothing goes wrong.
If Teen 1 starts cooking at 6:00 they will be done at 6:15 giving the family time to eat and get ready for Teen 2’s soccer.
Wednesday
On Wednesday the family has no activities in the afternoon. So, Teen 2 can start cooking at 4:50.
Parent A will be home to make sure Teen 2 doesn’t burn or hurt themselves.
Dinner will be served at 5:30 right when Parent B gets home.
Chicken Satay Noodles makes 4 servings so there is no need to change the recipe.
Thursday
Teen 2 will be cooking because Teen 1 will be tired from Basketball.
They will start cooking at 5:35 so that food will be ready right Parent A gets home.
This means the food can’t get cold.
Friday
Parent A comes home at 4:30, Parent B comes home at 5:30, and Teen 2 comes home at 3:30. Teen 1 doesn’t come home until 9:30 because of school and work.
Parent B comes home and takes 10 minutes to get ready to cook, takes 35 minutes to cook, and 5 minutes to prepare. Teen 1 can’t come home, so the other 3 people eat around.
Vegetable Pad Thai makes 6 serving, Parent B has to make 1/3 of the original recipe. Teen 1 can reheat the food later and eat when they get home from work.
Describe all the ways your group communicated and shared information with each other.
For this project my group had a shared word document. This allowed all the people in our group to share our justifications and solutions for each day. We also communicated in person to ask questions about other group members opinions.
Use of Technology
Describe all the ways your group used technology. Were you familiar with these digital tools before this assignment or was this your first time using any of them?
All the members in my group used laptops to access our shared word document. We all have used Microsoft Word before and I have experience with sharing documents so more than one person has access to them.
We also used Edublog. All our group members have used this in the school year. Our group did have to experiment with how we could represent our solution in each of our blog posts.
Distribution of Tasks
Describe how tasks were distributed in your group.
Our group decided that it would be best if we split the work by days. One person did Monday and Wednesday and another member did Tuesday and Thursday. The third member of our group did Friday but they also found a new recipe for our group to use in the solution. We did our best to make everything equal.
My Work and Contribution
What tasks did you complete? When I look at your group’s solution, where can I see evidence of your contribution?
I completed the final solution and justified Monday and Wednesday. In the final solution I also completed the solution and justified Thursday because one of my group members did not complete his part of the project. I also rewrote the problem for my group.
