Inquiry Reflection
For my inquiry I wrote 24 poems in a collection I titled ‘A poem for every hour I waste a day.’ It was an inquiry dedicated to developing my knowledge of poetry and my overall goal was to fight writers block by holding myself accountable and driven. My final product is something I am extremely proud of. It took a long time to complete, a lot of brain storming, tons of writing and rewriting, and a shocking amount of editing. I found that I have developed much more confidence in my own abilities and got my revised plan accomplished in a satisfying way. I really enjoyed the editing of my poems because it lacked the stress of having to write an entirely new poem but still held the creative aspect. This creative aspect was something I was glad to explore and I enjoyed diving deeper into my interest in the subject. I look forward to rereading my inquiry in a few years and analyzing how my subject matter, views, and poetic devices have changed or stayed the same. It was overall a great way to lay big emotions out to process and share.
Core Competency Reflection
Personal Identity & Communication in Poetry
Poetry is a deeply personal thing but I found that every single poem was also a lesson in communication. It was a fine line between tell vs imply and in my opinion I usually struck the balance in my poems. Some poems would’ve made no sense to a reader because they were deeply personal and vague but others balanced out by being more understandable and simple. Poetry allowed my to look at myself because of the emotions my poems drew from. It was an amazing way to vent some of my issues while practicing my communication of those issues. I needed to read every poem carefully and imagine how the words on the page may be received by someone without my personal experiences. If it seemed confusing without my own context I would edit, unless I wanted the poem to be purposefully extremely confusing, which I did do a few times to stay true to the goal of writing personal poems that meant something to myself. The project was an outlet that allowed me practice in communicating myself to others.
