Curricular Competency Reflection
The project is on acid rain and lime statue because the acid rain melts down the limestone and a everything fact is that it is hard sometimes to make acid rain and other times is it easy for it to happen and it is bad for the environment. Acid rain is hard and bad on the environment because it eats trees and rocks. I have a responsibility to not contribute to the development of acid rain.
Core Competency Reflection
I gained new understanding of how acid rain occurs and the effects on the environment. Acid rain is pollutants in rain that changes the environment. Acid rain is from human pollution, natural processes, power plants, vehicles. I have chosen the thinking competency for science 10. Thinking required examining information, making judgements and drawing conclusions. The analysis of acid rain allowed me to understand the work and help find solutions to problems and issues. I learned about how when atoms are rearranged, there are chemical processes that can cause positive or negative effective on living things, create new thing or hurt the environment. Acid rain is a huge problem on earth and being aware of how to improve our planet to make a better world is important. Limestone is mostly calcium carbonate. Acid rain is a blend of sulfuric and nitric acids. Normal rain is slightly acidic at 5.6 or lower. Acid rain is below a 2.4 pH. These facts are important to understand the chemical changes that occur when pollutants react with rain and causes damage on earth.
Limestone accounts for 10% of the earth’s crust. It’s been used to make buildings. Acid rain dissolves limestone. There is chemical reaction in many things in life. Energy change is required as atoms are rearranged in a chemical process. Energy is conserved and it can transform things such as living things and the environment.
In this situation, the limestone dissolves and the reaction looks like a dissolution and formation of Gypsum. Factors that influence the reaction are acid concentration, temperature – warm weather increases reaction rates and presence of other minerals.
The environmental impact is huge. It changes, rock, transforms ecosystems and huma made structure. On nature, acid rain eats away limestone changes landscapes and riverbanks can crumble and wear away rock formations. With water, calcium is released into rivers and lakes, altering PH levels, which can react with fish.
Monuments can crumble at a rate of 0.05mm per year due to acid interactions, and leads to weakening structures, and leads to expensive maintenance costs. Statues may become faceless; tombstones will become unreadable. Metals are also vulnerable and may corrode such as bronze, copper, nickel zinc. Stainless steel and mild steel are the most vulnerable. Prevention or minimizing harm is key to prevention of erosion of limestone and the effects on the environments. Reducing emissions, using renewable energy sources such as wind or solar energy can decrease sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Driving electric cars helps the air stay cleaner. Building bigger green spaces help decrease carbon dioxide, improving air quality. Restoration of limestone and protective sealants can guard against acid rain.
Personal and Social Development (Core Competency)
In terms of personal growth, I am more aware that actions have consequences. and I need to try hard when things are difficult. Asking questions, I ask questions about what I’m working out with asking for help and I will ask for help if I need it. I need to work on not getting frustrated when I’m stuck on something. I recognize I need to be accountable for my work and put in effort to be successful. Science 10 is very hard but I can learn if I pay attention in class and do my homework.
In terms of responsibility, I understand the importance of meeting your deadlines i meet the deadlines and hand in my work on time and if I’m not going to I will ask for more time to work on it
Communicating (Core Competency)
I have learned about communication and how effective listening helps develop understanding and relationships. This will help me at home, in relationships and my community. I need to communicate to understand my world and my experiences. I can use multiple sources to communicate including texts, social medial and writing. I need to work on my spelling and reading skills.
