Chemistry 12 Reflection

Communication (Collaborating)

I can take on one of my task of setting up each titration attempt efficiently and in an organized manner. After each taking the needed observations for each attempt I was quick to clean out the Erlenmeyer flask, and prepare the needed HCl in the pipette and adding more NaOH in the burette if needed. I was also effective in initially setting up for the lab and cleaning up afterwards. This allowed us to get in all the necessary attempts with time to spare in class.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical/Reflective thinking

When observing the starch and IKI solution in the dialysis tube, and the water in the beaker solution, I saw that some starch had left the tubing and leaked into the water. This should not have happened, I concluded that an error was made during the preparation process. For next time, proper precautions need to be taken to make sure the experiment goes accordingly.

Personal awareness/responsibility

The lab could have went better if I took the proper time before hand to prepare for it. I should have done more review on how molecules diffused, this would help create a better hypothesis because I felt mine was really weak. And I should have read the instructions more carefully, I did not properly dry the dialysis tube and that could have contributed to the reason why the starch leaked out of the tube.

Pre-Calculus 11 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Core Competency Reflection

For my first topic I chose committing to individual practice. I never really studied or practiced really hard when it came to studying. But I wanted to change when I moved schools, I thought this would be my fresh start. And I came in with an over confident attitude, thinking I would fly through my classes. I’m glad I was able to get hit with reality, and have a, for lack of a better term, unsatisfying grade on my first few tests and assignments. I say I was glad to have got a bad mark, because it made me realize how much I really needed to improve. And so I tried my best to do that, I spent class time efficiently, completing all of the work book questions, and participating in group work. I was able to boost my mark up a little bit, but definitely not as much as I wanted to. Despite that, I’m proud to say I have a better understanding of concepts learnt this year than last year. And the only thing left for me to do is put more effort into next year than I did this year.

My next topic is working collaboratively with others. I really liked the incorporation of group work in math, in past math classes at my old school, they would never do this. And working with others really helped me understand the concepts more deeply. Although, math is more than understanding concepts, but also a skill that needs to be learnt from repetitive practice. Having the group work at the beginning of class helped give the baseline of understanding, to help move on to the real practice within the workbooks or handouts. And when my friends or I ever struggled with questions, we would help each other figure it out.

Advice for Future Students

I hope everyone spends time practicing questions. I don’t think there’s such thing as too much practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll get, and please ask for help when you need it right away, you don’t want to be stuck on a problem longer than you need to be.

Marketing Edublog Post

Core Competency โ€œI canโ€ statement Artifact Reflection
Communication: collaborating I contribute during group activities with peers and share roles and responsibilities to achieve goals. The first group project with Aiden on improving the marketing mix. For the first group project, I separated the tasks accordingly and gave quality work in the task I was assigned. I shared my concerns with my partner and communicated accordingly to what needs had to be met. And for every project after that, I gave in to quality work to ensure that I was not the one holding the group back from a good mark.
Thinking: Critical and reflective thinking I can explore During the ethics project, I voiced with my partner whether we should use a company as an example of good or bad work ethics.  I can confidently voice my opinion with my peers during a group project about whether I like something or not. It is important for all parties to show their point of view in a group project. For everything to go smoothly, everyone needs to be within agreement. If we had someone present something that they did not agree with, then how could they ever give their max effort into something they do not fully support?
Personal & Social: Personal awareness and responsibility  I can ask questions and consider options. I can use my observations, experience, and imagination to draw conclusions and make judgment During the project on ethics, I shut down ideas from my partner, but also accepted other ideas from him. I like to believe I am an open-minded person; I often go back on opinions I strongly believed to be true. Not because I had no confidence in what I thought, but because I listen to when people are talking to me, and I take in their point of view, and if their arguments hold more merit than mine, I will recant my judgment. But if the opposite is what happens, and my opinion still has a base to stand on, I will stay true to my original thought.

french 11 movie poster

My partner and I worked on creating the movie poster, Whiplash, for our French class. We collaborated and created ideas for how we were going to create a high quality, creative poster. This was from how we were going to layout the text and images, the quality of the grammar and the texts themselves, and how we were going to present this project. At the end of it all, we felt confident, and satisfied with our project.

Transforming Parabolas

Significance of a, h and k

๐’ถ’s significance in my parabola: My ๐’ถ (3) made it so my parabola opened upwards and was more compressed than the parent function.

๐’ฝ’s significance in my parabola: My ๐’ฝ (4) made the vertex of my parabola horizontally shift 4 units to the left from the parent function.

๐“€’s significance in my parabola: My ๐“€ (5) made the vertex of my parabola vertically shift up 5 units from the parent function

Conclusion: My parabola y=3(x+4)ยฒ+5 opened upwards, was more compressed than the parent function and it shifted left 4 units and up 5 units. Parent function: y=a(x+h)ยฒ+k

Self-Assessment

I used my understanding of the different values and their functions to find out their places on the graph. Such as the ๐’ถ value, I know that since ๐’ถ > 0 its going to be compressed, and since its a positive I know it’s going to open up. And from the values of ๐’ฝ and ๐“€, I can determine how the parabola is going to shifted within the graph.

I used math vocabulary like vertical shift and horizontal shift to explain the placement of my parabola on the graph.

I sectioned each value and it’s function to give a clearer definition for each, rather than putting it all in one big paragraph.

Facing a Challenge

The first time I tried this problem I made the mistake of not FOIL-ing the negative symbol into the binomial on the right, and that gave me a completely wrong answer. At first I didn’t know what I did wrong, but after talking to a friend about the problem and comparing his work to time, I saw where I made my simple mistake not FOIL-ing the symbol. And I made this mistake because I rush my work, so going forward I’m going to take my time and double check everything.

Core Competencies – Yearbook

I took the responsibility of taking photos for the school since the course started. Within the yearbook photo team, we were all given designated subjects and types of sports we were assigned to take pictures of. However, I was given the task of also covering sports games where some of our team members were not able to cover. Un-willing and dreading the idea at first, I knew that there was no one else other than me and Nathan that could get coverage of this game. We took this responsibility and made it possible to get photos of this game.ย

Character of mooch Daylyn Nguyen

There are many examples to illustrate the character of Mooch. Mooch is a deeply traumatized, dysfunctional person, with a resilient spirit. His trauma and dysfunction first begin with his time at residential school. โ€œAnd there was this shadowโ€ Mooch is referring to his physical and mental abuse received from the administrators of the school. He was also there the night Anna killed herself by jumping off a bridge into the spot where the two rivers meet. โ€œI was there when she jumped.โ€ His trauma is only strengthened by this experience, as he had to watch one of his close friends die with helpless wistful emotions. But it is evident that Mooch is a strong, resilient character. Anyone who suffered as much as him would not be able to hang onto life, they would want to give up. โ€œI walk along this bridge every night.โ€ The bridge he refers to is the one that many people with trauma jump off, including Anna. Being able to walk along a bridge that carries that much pain and emotion is indicative of a resilient spirit. Even with all the suffering Mooch went through, he still pushes through it all and goes on with life.
