Transforming Parabolas

Significance of a, h and k

𝒶’s significance in my parabola: My 𝒶 (3) made it so my parabola opened upwards and was more compressed than the parent function.

𝒽’s significance in my parabola: My 𝒽 (4) made the vertex of my parabola horizontally shift 4 units to the left from the parent function.

𝓀’s significance in my parabola: My 𝓀 (5) made the vertex of my parabola vertically shift up 5 units from the parent function

Conclusion: My parabola y=3(x+4)²+5 opened upwards, was more compressed than the parent function and it shifted left 4 units and up 5 units. Parent function: y=a(x+h)²+k

Self-Assessment

I used my understanding of the different values and their functions to find out their places on the graph. Such as the 𝒶 value, I know that since 𝒶 > 0 its going to be compressed, and since its a positive I know it’s going to open up. And from the values of 𝒽 and 𝓀, I can determine how the parabola is going to shifted within the graph.

I used math vocabulary like vertical shift and horizontal shift to explain the placement of my parabola on the graph.

I sectioned each value and it’s function to give a clearer definition for each, rather than putting it all in one big paragraph.

Facing a Challenge

The first time I tried this problem I made the mistake of not FOIL-ing the negative symbol into the binomial on the right, and that gave me a completely wrong answer. At first I didn’t know what I did wrong, but after talking to a friend about the problem and comparing his work to time, I saw where I made my simple mistake not FOIL-ing the symbol. And I made this mistake because I rush my work, so going forward I’m going to take my time and double check everything.
