Fetal Pig Dissection – This is our Fetal Pig from the dissection lab. We were to get familiar with it on the first day, to make the labelling and dissection part easier.
Communication:
I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. This statement represents that I was able to take what I learned in any demonstrations shown by the teacher and apply that learning on the Fetal Pig. I had the ability to gain information and share it with my partner, so that we could collaborate and share ideas, for the best possible outcome. The topic that interest me, was the labelling of all the parts of the Pig, as shown in demonstration I was able to look back and take in more information every time to show my learning when labelling the body parts.
The communication aspect also allowed me to organize my ideas in a more clear way, as I could brainstorm off my partners idea as well. This communication allowed me to gain more knowledge of the topic. I can now use more communication aspects moving forward through other labs or projects to gain a deeper understanding.
Critical and Reflective Thinking
I can reflect on my thinking. I am able to make judgments and use my critical thinking skills when it comes to the dissection task at hand. For example, me and my partner needed to work together to maneuver through the fetal pig, this applies to critical thinking as we needed to find creative ways we could work together, like if one of us held the pig down, while the other observed.
When doing the labelling portion I began to reflect on our progress and realized how our creative and critical thinking skills helped us get that far. We we almost able to label all the parts of the pigs body. The critical thinking skills helped us all along the lab.
To gain a deeper understanding of the characters in The Crucible, one must apply Kohlberg’s moral perceptions to the text, which can provide insights into the motivations and influences behind certain characters and their actions. This essay will use Kohlberg’s moral precepts as an explanation and analysis. Kohlberg uses three levels of moral development that can determine people’s behaviors, these include: pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional. All levels represent a progression that typically unfolds over time, within an individual’s life. In many instances, a character’s actions may reflect more than one of these stages in the matter of certain actions.
To further reflect on the introduction to The Crucible and Kohlberg’s perceptions, there are many examples within The Crucible that illustrate pre-conventional characters are involved. Pre-conventional characters are displayed when they act out of self-interest, to avoid punishment and focus on the reward. John Proctor portrays himself as a pre-conventional character. He demonstrates this when he is in a conversation with Elizabeth. He displays his pre-conventional ideology by saying that “[he’ll] think on it”. After Elizabeth urges John to go into the city of Salem and expose Abigail’s lies about witchcraft, Proctor hesitates and thinks whether or not he should involve himself. Although John could confess, it would cost his marriage, and he would commit the sin of lechery. It reflects his internal struggles. Another character that displays themselves seeking reward and avoiding punishment is Abigail. She portrays her pre-convention when she says to the other girls, “[she] will come to [them] in the black of some terrible night, and [she] will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder [them]”. It shows her threatening the other girls from the woods to stay silent about the activities that occurred concerning witchcraft. She was focused on self-preservation. She uses the threat to ensure that she keeps her reputation and avoids any punishment for herself. Finally, the last example is Reverand Parris. Expressing his pre-convention, he says, “you cannot hang this sort, there is danger for me”. He is worried people are going to be after him. When Parris says this, he starts to realize that he has a concern for his own reputation, safety, and well-being, so he shows more focus towards that. This shows Parris is concerned with the fact that if members of the well-respected community were executed, he may be at risk. In conclusion, The Crucible contains many characters that act in a pre-conventional manner.
The shift from pre-conventional to conventional morality, in The Crucible shows the beginning of when characters emerge where they start to prioritize their reputation over personal beliefs. Further to this, there are many characters that are conventional throughout The Crucible. These characters align in a way to fit in with the beliefs, expectations, or behaviors of a larger group. They find ways to maintain acceptance and keep within their associated group. Betty is conventional. She demonstrates her convention when she “[sees] George Jacobs with the devil!” When Betty says this, she represents the societal norms of Salem. This is represented as she fits in with the others by yelling out and speaking on her own terms. She gains acceptance even if that means that she compromises the truth. Another demonstration of fitting into a group is when Ann Putnam says; “I take it on my soul, but who else may surely tell us what person murdered my babies”. She said witches have killed her babies so that she may not look weird in front of everyone, including the Christians, she puts the blame of her baby’s death on ‘The witches”, this makes her look like a good Christian person. Finally, Judge Danforth displays his convention when he states, “A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road in between”. Judge Danforth addresses this statement to the people of Salem. He reflects a strict and rule-oriented system that is commonly associated with a judge of the court. He ensures his position and fits into it by stating his claim. Questioning authority was known as disloyalty. He takes it as offence and demonstrates why he fits the role of a judge. To conclude, there are many statements within The Crucible that display conventional characteristics.
As the Crucible progresses, there are post-conventional characters found in the Crucible. Post-conventional characters display how they have a keen sense of values and beliefs towards themselves. They are not influenced by any punishment, reward, or group acceptance. John Proctor is post-conventional. He shows this when he says, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life”. Proctor says this quote in expression of commitment to protect his name and not reveal the truth. He says this quote in a heated argument with Judge Danforth as he has a confession in his hands although he doesn’t want his name to spill. A boundless anger rises on him while the questioning goes on interfering with Proctors personal integrity. Hale illustrates he isn’t influenced by any means after saying, “Man you will hang! You cannot!”. This quote by Hale represents the challenge towards the court’s authority and the way the system is run. The character presents what he believes is a correct way of justice instead of what’s legally enforced. Finally, the last character that portrays a sense of post-convention is Elizabeth, after she says that “he gave his goodness now. God, forbid I take it from him”. When John makes the decision to die on his own, Elizabeth shows integrity while still feeling a bit of guilt. She honors the decision made by John, and instead of trying to hold him back and fight him for it, she shows her own beliefs that represent how she can support Johns decision by prioritizing personal integrity over survival. It is John’s decision, not Elizabeth’s, that is why she represents her own beliefs by making her own decision, not having a thought what other people think, because it will be better for her.
In conclusion to the essay, Arthur Miller demonstrates he can show the complexities of different human beings and characters through the stages of Kohlberg’s moral perceptions. These perceptions include pre-conventional, where you act out to gain reward and avoid punishment, conventional, when you act in a way to fit into a group, and post-conventional, when you have your own beliefs with no regard for others’ opinions. Each character’s actions can reveal motivations and influences shaped around scenarios. Arthur Miller is able to highlight the consequences within certain choices, which emphasizes the integrity of characters and their well-being.
This is a picture of a squid from our Squid dissection lab in class. We did the dissection in the super lab, I was able to learn lots more about squids. During the lab we took it apart to look at various body parts within the squid. This lab was good because it engaged me into the concept of dissection.
I can relate this lab towards the Communication core competency because during the lab there was many collaborations going on. Even though the lab was done independently, peers were still there to share ideas and communicate about thoughts on their own part. While I was dissecting the squid, I needed help a couple of times, so I would ask members of my table group to assist me with the work. Some other ways we collaborated was that we talked to each other the whole time, trying to figure out things on our own, to show responsibility. My role was to be as independent as possible and listen to directions as I would dissect the squid. I used different strategies throughout the dissection to help myself, such as: Using different tools where needed, wearing gloves, cleaning up my station, etc… For next time, I would work on focusing on directions more, so that I can be independent.
I can analyze evidence to make judgements. During the lab I was able to analyze my squid and ask questions when necessary. I was also able to determine different parts of the squid by communicating with my peers. This then allowed me to identify what tools or things I may need for the process of the dissection. I took what I learned in the lab, and applied it on paper (written portion). Observing the squid up close gave me ideas and insights about the recognition of body parts on the squid.
I can show a sense of accomplishment in my work. During the squid dissection lab I felt accomplished in myself as I was working mostly independently, this gave me a sense of accomplishment in my work. When we finished with the lab, I helped clean my groups table: Sterilization of the tabletop, putting tools away, throwing gloves out, etc…
We played Monopoly in Accounting 11 as a assessment for our knowledge. It was a project we did for the Mid-Term and it showed that we are demonstrating learning of material we learned in class. We worked in groups and collaboratively and collectively worked together to get the assignment done.
Create and communicate: I learned about multiple indigenous themes or traditions during this assignment because it required us to go through, and read an indigenous themed book, called ‘The Mountain Legend’, it helped bring a perspective in my mind towards indigenous thoughts and actions. I learned that they refer to some people as ‘warriors’, and also that it is normal for any indigenous person to wear a ponytail, or braids. The reason I chose this assignment was because I think I did a good job with the entire assignment and the finished project.
I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others.
During this assignment I was able to build ideas in my head as I was reading on how I could accomplish this assignment well. I was also able to ask peers of mine if I needed extra ideas or support. I was able to form new ideas that helped me create and construct the outline of the infographic.
Working collaboratively with others – I liked working in groups before we started the assignment each day because it gave me an opportunity to learn and reflect with peers and classmates on my own work and others. It also allowed me to understand the material better as I was able to communicate with my group members and understand each equation, word problem, or other questions to the best of my abilities. Group worked helped me collaborate and elaborate with classmates as we shared ideas and our opinions on certain questions, which then led to me understanding the material better. After completing each question during group work it almost felt rewarding because it helped us understand our mistakes and how we were able to fix them, then it would all lead into the assignment for the day.
Treating myself and others with respect – I would treat myself and my peers with respect because I understand that some math material can be challenging sometimes and takes others more time to understand. I will always treat myself with respect and try not to get frustrated when I don’t understand certain questions. When I don’t understand the material I will usually ask questions and be polite about it.
One piece of key advice I would suggest for future students in this course is to take time to study and prepare for tests. Studying and preparing for tests will help you execute the material on tests way better and will also help you get better grades on the test, which will then help with your grade in the class. Preparing for test is very important because it will also help with the length of your test and how long you will be taking the test.
Another piece of advice that is really important is to ask questions and make sure you understand the material to the best of your abilities before going into a test. Using flex and Cent time is essential to go to if you have extra homework you need to finish up or a test coming up.
Domain is all of the possible x values of a function. The domain shows that all the possible values are any real numbers because the Parabola keeps going on the graph meaning it will never end.
Range is all the possible y values of a function. The graph shows that the range can only be -2 or any larger number because the Parabola never dips lower than -2.
This Parabola is a function, Although, it is not a one-to-one function. I can tell that this Parabola is a function because by doing the vertical line test, I was able to determine that the line never had two points of contact while testing the Domain (x) proving that it can be all real numbers. Although, while I tested the Range (y) it had two points of contact the entire time, showing that it can’t be a one-to-one function because if written out there will be repeated numbers. In conclusion, this Parabola is a Function.
This is my ‘Car on Fire’ short story. I did this assignment near the beginning of the year and I saw much improvement from then till now. This assignment we had to talk about a time where there was a moment in your life that hit you deep inside. I decided to choose this one because when I was little this moment struck me and stunned me, I was very little and I saw my neighbors car on fire in the middle of the night. I am proud of this work, I am proud because I was able to share an important time in my life.
I make ethical choices such as… sharing a moment in my life in order to… get the best grade possible.
Some of the ways I work to build and maintain relationships are… Sharing my ideas to my peers to see if they have insight, maybe they will give me suggestions on how I can make my piece better. I talk to my peers to maintain a good relationship.
Although I am challenged by… finding time to work and keeping a good mindset and not procrastinating. I can get through these challenges by tapping in to… my own mind and motivating myself to get this done as quick as possible so I don’t have to worry about it.
My artifact is my ‘Mi Familia’ project. This project was a Spanish PowerPoint we needed to make about our family. My goal for this project was to tell a little bit about each person in my family and give a short description of their likes and interest or even their hobbies. This project helped me because I needed to use my creative thinking skills to come up with 5 sentences per slide because that was how much we needed to have.
I can develop a body of creative work over time… I was able to create a great work piece over a week that we worked on this project. I was focused and over time I created an amazing piece of work for my Spanish class.
I can advocate for myself… I am able to support myself and give myself motivation to complete a project. After the project was handed in I felt like a champion and felt so proud of myself for handing it in on time and feeling like I did a great job.
I can reflect on my thinking… I can reflect on my thinking by looking back after I handed my project in, I was able to see my mark and I felt proud of myself when I saw that I got a good mark. I also got feedback so that I could look back and see what I could do better or see if I could be more creative with my thoughts/thinking.
