Enzyme Toothpick Lab
Communication: In this Lab, I acted as the timer and my partner performed the experiment. My partner acted as the enzyme and performed the experiment by breaking the toothpicks. We made sure to time our countdown so that we had accurate results. We were able to share ideas with one another regarding strategies to break the toothpicks and the countdown by communicating with one another. The only misunderstanding that we had was that we didn’t know who would do each role. The only thing that I would have changed in this lab would be to make our roles clear from the beginning so that we don’t waste time.
- I can apply constructive strategies to navigate misunderstandings and conflicts
- I can work with others to achieve a goal
- I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share
Thinking: There were many strategies used to complete this lab. Some included picking up toothpicks a specific way and positioning the hand specifically. We were also able to see how other groups were carrying out their “concentration of enzymes”. By doing this, we decided to simulate their technique and I think we had a good outcome. When we started “slight denaturation”, we weren’t breaking any toothpicks, literally none. But, one of our peers ended up giving us some tips and we broke 5 in total at the end. It wasn’t a lot, but at least we were able to break some. Next time, I would try to ensure that we are using good technique, especially for “concentration of enzymes”.
- I can analyze evidence to make judgements.
- I can reflect on my thinking.
- I can give, receive and act on feedback to progress in my goals.
Personal/Social: During the lab, I was encouraging my partner to break more toothpicks and also helped him break some during the “concentration of enzymes” part. I participated in the activity and it had a positive impact on my class. This is because I partnered with one of my classmates, and helped with one of the roles. I demonstrated respectful/inclusive behavior in that I allowed my partner to perform the lab, and I listened to his opinions and thoughts throughout. This lab strengthened my relationship with my partner because we were able to communicate effectively and complete the lab within a reasonable amount of time.
- I can participate in activities that support my well-being and take responsibility for my well-being.
- I can persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning and behavior.
- I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself
