Core Competency Reflection: Social Awareness and Responsibility

Socials 10 Mid-Term Reflection

Cause and consequence

One of the curricular competencies I’ve been developing is understanding case and consequence in historical events. I’ve become stronger at identifying what led to certain historical events and explaining how they created long term r short term impacts. for example, when learning about WW1, I was able to explain how militarism, alliances and nationalism played a role in starting the war, and how those causes impacted on the war. I’m able to break down complex events into smaller events or sections, to understand how each actions create a chained effect and led to the war breakout. However, an area I’m still focusing on is using inquiry to explore deeper consequences. I sometimes just accept the first explanation i find on the internet when I search the topic up without even asking more questions or thinking about other perspectives. To improve, I want to ask more thoughtful questions that challenges myself and to build the habit of wanting to know more and be able to answer with more than just surface-level answers. By strengthening my inquiry skills, I can develop a more complete understanding of the topic and be more familiar with the impacts on those historical events.

Core Competency

Communication is a core competency I’ve worked on throughout the second semester in this class. I think one of my strengths is being able to express my ideas somewhat clearly in writing. I’ve imrpoved at organizing my thoughts, using evidence to support my points and to make my writing more engaging for the readers. In writing assignments, i try my best to address my ideas clearly while providing an in deth explanation to support my ideas. However, one area i want to grow in is my communication during group works or presentations. Sometimes i find it challenging to speak up or clearly share my ieeas when working with a group, especially presentations in front of the class. I also tend to hold back when I disagree in a large group project even when i have a different opinion. To improve, I want to work on being mroe confident in group discussions and avtively contribute ideas and asking quesitons that helps the group moving fowar. I also want to build onto the leader role by practicing my listening skills as to make sure everyone in the group feels heard and collaborate better as a team.

Textiles Core Competency Self-Assessment

Creative thinking & Critical/Reflective thinking

My artifact: tracksuit set

For my textiles project, I designed and created my own sweats tracksuit, consisting of a cropped fitted hoodie and baggy pants. During the creative process, I explored different fits and fabric choices, ultimately deciding on an oversized while fitted look for comfort and style. I built upon existing streetwear trends while incorporating my own touch. In terms of sewing skills, I demonstrated pattern drafting, cutting, pinning, stitching (both straight and zigzag), serging, and adding cuffs and waistbands. One challenge I faced was achieving clean seams, but I refined my technique through practice and adjustments. Next time, I would experiment more with fabric textures such as double lining the fabrics and finishing details such as clean seams and smooth edges to enhance the overall quality.

My Artifact: Sweatpants & reworking Jorts

At the start of the course, I wanted to make some sweatpants, but I had no experience in sewing, so I decided to start by reworking a pair of jorts and hemming them. I started with easy straight seams and then moved on to rotating once I felt confident with it. I went back to my notes and asked my peers for help. Reworking jorts often involves solving challenges like uneven fraying, adjusting length, and stitching in new fabrics. Critical thinking helped me approach these obstacles by trying various solutions, like using different stitching techniques for different areas on the jean shorts. I took my time with the sweatpants such as choosing a fabric that I liked and making sure it turned out exactly how I wanted it to be. When creating sweatpants from scratch, critical thinking becomes even more crucial due to the added complexity of building an entire garment from raw materials. Critical thinking took a huge role such as planning overhead and using different clips for stretchy materials. From design to execution, I ensured that the sweatpants are well-made and comfortable, as close to what i had imagined. I also learnt a lot of new skills and things to avoid on my next similar projects. Overall, i had an awesome experience with this project.
