Chain Reaction Challenge: Maximizing Kinetic Energy

Creative Thinking

In the chain reaction lab, I used creative thinking to come up with ideas on how to make things move and connect. We didn’t have a set plan, so I had to try different ways to make the energy transfer work using Hot Wheels, dominoes, and other objects. When something didn’t work, I thought of new ways to fix it. It took a lot of trying, changing, and testing, But in the end, it helped me build a working design although it didn’t really came out to what I expected.

Design

I think the overall design worked fine. However, this is not my proudest assignment since the design didn’t turn out to be what I expected it to be because of different reasons such as teamwork and distractions. However, despite the negative energy flowing among my group, i tried my best to stay calm and lead my group. I also made sure to assign everyone with some sort of task so that it kept everyone busy for at least a little while. We listened to each other’s ideas as a group, which helped to create our final design overall.

Initial end result

Yea the initial end-result did turn out to be the same for my machine. I’ve made changes through the first and second energy transfer, but I’ve kept the result the same since the start and it was to drop a ball into a cup which triggers the launcher and shoots the car into the pins. I liked this idea since it was always consistent, and I thought that the ball that lands in the cup and which transfer energy to trigger the launcher was an interesting and unique idea.

What would I do differently

If I were to do this again, i would definitely work by myself or with a new group. Although it could be great working in groups and getting ideas from your peers, it’s hard to be the leader of the group when some of us don’t really participate or want to contribute. I think that if I were to work on this myself, my final design would turn out to be somewhat close to my original design and with each design it would be an improvement but not a simpler design.

CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

CPR Reflection

I didn’t know that hands-only CPR can be just as effective as traditional CPR i learnt from my first aid course. I had always been taught that 2 rescue breaths were necessary, but learning that chest compressions alone can keep oxygen circulating made me realize how accessible CPR can be for bystanders.

A key takeaway is the importance of acting quickly—starting CPR within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest can double or even triple a person’s chances of survival. This taught me how crucial confidence and readiness are in emergency situations.

This unit connects to the nutrition unit because good nutrition and heart health are closely related. A poor diet can lead to conditions like heart disease or obesity, which increase the risk of cardiac arrest. Learning CPR prepares us to respond in emergencies, while understanding nutrition helps us prevent those emergencies from happening in the first place.

This CPR unit connects to the soccer unit because both involve physical activity and an understanding of the body under stress. In soccer, we learned how important it is to warm up, stay hydrated, and maintain heart health during exercise. The CPR unit showed us what to do if something goes wrong—like if someone collapses from a heart-related emergency during a game. Both units highlight the importance of safety, fitness, and being prepared to help others when needed.

Core Competency Reflection

During the CPR unit, I recognized that I was a bit nervous about performing chest compressions, but with practice, I gained confidence. I pushed myself to learn because I realized how valuable these skills could be in a real emergency.

I stayed focused and engaged during both the CPR and soccer units because I knew these lessons could help me stay safe and support others. I asked questions and practiced seriously to make sure I understood how to respond in different situations.

In the CPR unit, I worked with my classmates to practice compressions and give feedback. In the soccer unit, I encouraged my teammates and communicated during gameplay to help us stay organized and perform better as a team.

Transforming Parabolas

Red

The equation f(x) = x2 can be transformed into the general form of a quadratic function, which is: f(x) = a(x-h)2+k. In this equation, the vertex is (0,0) which means the axis of symmetry is right at point 0, with a minimum value of 0. Since both the h and k value are zero, the graph will neither have a vertical or a horizontal stretch.

Black

The equation f(x) = -1/2(x-2)2+3 can be transformed into the general form of a quadratic function, which is: f(x) = a(x-h)2+k. In this equation, the vertex is (2,3) which means the axis of symmetry is right at point 2. The h value of 2 shifts the graph 2 units to the right, and the k value of 3 shifts the graph 3 units up. The coefficient a is -1/2, which reflects the graph over the x-axis, causing it to open downwards, and compresses it vertically, making it wider. Together, these transformations result in a downward-opening, wider parabola with a maximum value of 3.

Green

The equation f(x) = -2(x-4)2 +3 can be written in the general form of a quadratic function, f(x) = a(x-h)2+k. In this case, the vertex is at (4,3), meaning the axis of symmetry is at x = 4. The h value of 4 shifts the graph 4 units to the right, and the k value of 3 shifts the graph 3 units up. The coefficient a is −2, which reflects the graph over the x-axis, making it open downwards, and stretches it vertically, making it steeper. These transformations result in a downward-opening, narrower-shaped parabola with a maximum value of 3.

Orange

The equation f(x) = 2(x+3)2+1 can be written in the general form of a quadratic function, f(x) = a(x-h)2+k. Here, the vertex is at (-3,1), meaning the axis of symmetry is at x = -3. The h value of -3 shifts the graph 3 units to the left, and the k value of 1 shifts the graph 1 unit up. The coefficient a is 2, which reflects the graph over the x-axis, making it open upwards, and stretches it vertically, making it steeper. These transformations result in an upwards-opening, narrower shaped parabola, with a minimum value of 1.

Purple

The equation f(x) = 1/4(x+1)2 can be written in the general form of a quadratic function, f(x) = a(x-h)2+k. In this case, the vertex is at (−1,0), meaning the axis of symmetry is at x=−1. The h value of −1 shifts the graph 1 unit to the left, and the k value of 0 means there is no vertical shift. The coefficient a is 1/4, which reflects the graph over the x-axis, making it open upwards, and compresses it vertically, making it wider. These transformations produce an upwards-opening, wider parabola, with a minimum value of 0.

Self-Assessment

1. How did you represent the same mathematical idea in multiple ways in this assignment?

I used Desmos to visually showcase my quadratic functions, giving readers a clear vision while reading my explanation for “a”, “h”, and “k” and how the transformations affected the graph.

2. State some of the relevant mathematical vocabulary words you used to demonstrate your understanding and their definitions. State where you found the definitions (your own memory, class notes, online?)

I used mathematical vocabulary such as “positive”, “negative”, “shift”, “horizontally”, “vertically”, “quadratic”, “function”, “vertex”, “axis of symmetry”, “minimum value” and “maximum value”. I got the definitions from class memories and online class notes.

3. How did you use formatting to share your information in a clear and organized way?

I used the same formatting to explain the transformations for all five quadratic equations so readers could get a better understanding.

core-competency goal setting promopts

I just joined football this year. Although I am challenged by the sport, I plan to get throguh these challenges by commuting to the sport and trying my best in practices. I’d also watch film at home to improve my football knowledge.

I recognize that listening contributes to my understanding in these ways. Listening is a really useful scale that helps me understand tasks and allows me to keep track of what I’m working on and stay focused until the task is done. I intend to use my listening skills during class when the teacher gives assignments and explains work or simply teaches in general. Listening skills are really important and will contribute to my success.

Some of the ways I plan to work to build a maintain relationships by being nice and kind to others, always welcoming others and try to make them feel comfortable around school. I also plan on focusing more on others, for example like asking if I could help with anything or just check up on my friends , when I noticed that something up.

Me card

core competency

this project demonstrated strong critical thinking. Throughout this project, I’ve reflected on and analyzed my future goals and passions. I’ve asked myself questions and started to plan for my future. this project helped me develop thinking skills by finding my passions and skills, and turning them into possible plans. this project got me started to prepare for my future life rather than later on in life. for example, I love swimming and could be a coach or go into the fitness and sports industry. after this project, I found that I wanted to experience more things which got me to start looking for part-time jobs and volunteering

Advertisement Persuation Project

My Advertisement

Persuation Advertisiment Techniques

we included ethical apeal by proving that our product is trusted by household moms, gaining trust from the customers. we also included some logical apeal, we compared with other brands and gave edvidence of why we say so. lastly, through the video ad, we included interviews and evidence to prove our product.

Persuation and Advertisement Unit Reflection

it’s always important to understand who turely benifits from the purchases we make. thorught the advertisement, the company spends loads of money to make it seems like you’re the one whos taking all the benifits, geting the laptop you never even thought of getting for half the price. but if you think deeper into this, at the end of the day, you’re paying the company still, puchasing something that you’d never turely needed. the company just gained a sale from someone who never even considered about the product. one type of persuasion companies commonly used is ethical apeal. bandwagon is a great technique for ethical apeal. this is super effective as everyone have someone they look up to or a famous star that they like. since we look up to them, we’d want to be like them and learn, listen from them. therefore, if a clothing company used Drake for an ad for example, as humans, our “follow the herd mentality” would activate which would lead to more drake fans consider making a purchase from the brand because they know that even Drake wear it, it must be good. a great influencer can make a huge impact their fans’ actions or thoughts. this is extremely effective nas most people want to be included and be the part of ” the crowd”.

Core competency Reflection

I showed others that I truly valued their contributions by listening to eveyone’s thoughts and ideas and do my best to include them into the project. instead of working on the whiole project by myslef, we separated the project to different parts so we each get value for the final project.

I knew my group is working well together when I saw the teamwork among us and the process through the project. we focused on our parts, and also helped each other out when needed and listened to other’s thoughts. instead of arguing, we sorted out the problem and firgued the best way to solve the problem. i was proud of the final project. looking back, we had a lot of fun making the project, we not only finished before the due date, we also included some extending work. therefore, i think as a goup, we worked really well together.

Reflection 4 – Supaidaman

Spiderman has always been one of my favourite movies, because it’s exciting and the stories are always cool to watch. Supaidaman is an old show with not much budget to make. they used the exact same scenes but different lighting. the background always looks so fake in supaidaman compared to the high quality realistic background. it made me laugh when supaidaman first put on his suit by pressing the wrist controller. he was acting like a little boy playing transformers which reminds me of when i was younger. i would definitely recommend this show to other people since i had a great time watching the show and it’s nice that the show gives off a different spiderman vibe. i think it would be kinda funny to watch and maybe they will again recreate spiderman.

Reflection questions

A) How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project?

AI was a really important source i used since it provides different sources and gathers ideas for me. I then used my own words and created my work.

B) How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than was a project that the AI?

i got the help of AI and the source it provides. i read over them and gathered theinformations. then i recreated my work in my own words.

C) Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

i agreed with the position that i had to agrue because i believe that violence can be justified in some situations and i also made my partner change his opinion slightly.

Competency Reflection

*** Chose your 2 of the prompts to write about***

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this, i research enough details to make prove my ponit of view.

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include searching in google, use the infomation we learn in socials class, and with the help of AI.

Reflection 3 – School Life

  • How does school in Japan compare to Canada? Is there anything they do in Japan, that you wish we did at Centennial?
  • Do you think that students should have more responsibilities at school like cleaning duty or for clubs/sports? Why?
  • How lucky are you in じゃんけん?Would you be able to snag leftovers?

japan’s schools are way different than canada’s. Japan’s schools have uniform and everyone wears the smae clothes to school. compare to here, we get our own choice of clothes. Japan’s schools usally have a swimming pool at school beacuse of the hot weather. i wish that centennial can have a pool or even just a swimming unit in PE. i think students should have some responsibility at school, for example make sure to clean up your space every time or stack up chairs at the end of the day. in sports teams, i think everyone should take turns cleaning up tools or places if needed. i am really bad in rock paper scissors. i never win in that game.
