An Athabasca Story by Warren Cariou
Curricular Competencies: Comprehend and Connect
From this in-class assignment, I had a growth in my reading, listening, and viewing skills. I learned ‘absorb’ the text, to understand what the big idea was and what the overall message was. Additionally, during this assignment, I saw what other groups thought, enhancing my viewing skills. As for listening, I had to collaborate with my group to answer the questions collectively. From what I learned, I will use my listening, viewing, and reading skills towards reconciliation. To achieve reconciliation, I need to have listening, viewing, and reading skills to understand what the Indigenous communities need from me.

Core Competencies: Communication
During this class assignment, I had to communicate with my group members in order to achieve an overall agreement towards answering the given questions. I communicated what I perceived the answers were and listened to my group members opinions. We came to a collective agreement, found a big idea connected to the text, as well as the overarching message to the story. Using these skills can aid towards reconciliation. From using the skills I used during this assignment, I can listen to Indigenous communities more effectively, come to a collective agreement, and learn different perspectives.
