EFP 11 Reflection

An Athabasca Story by Warren Cariou

Curricular Competencies: Comprehend and Connect

From this in-class assignment, I had a growth in my reading, listening, and viewing skills. I learned ‘absorb’ the text, to understand what the big idea was and what the overall message was. Additionally, during this assignment, I saw what other groups thought, enhancing my viewing skills. As for listening, I had to collaborate with my group to answer the questions collectively. From what I learned, I will use my listening, viewing, and reading skills towards reconciliation. To achieve reconciliation, I need to have listening, viewing, and reading skills to understand what the Indigenous communities need from me.

Core Competencies: Communication

During this class assignment, I had to communicate with my group members in order to achieve an overall agreement towards answering the given questions. I communicated what I perceived the answers were and listened to my group members opinions. We came to a collective agreement, found a big idea connected to the text, as well as the overarching message to the story. Using these skills can aid towards reconciliation. From using the skills I used during this assignment, I can listen to Indigenous communities more effectively, come to a collective agreement, and learn different perspectives.

Communication

In this lab, I communicated with my partner constantly. We made sure the procedure wasn’t carried out incorrectly and there were no safety rules being broken. If either one of us were confused throughout the lab we explained any misunderstandings. Additionally, in the lab I gained more communication skills with other people in the class whenever I needed help my partner could not provide.

Social Justice Core Competency

Personal Awareness & Responsibility

In Social Justice 12, it is important to have personal awareness. For instance, a part of maturing and taking in heavy topics is due to personal awareness; understanding that you have more privilege lives than others due to your personal identity. Additionally, personal awareness and responsibility carries weight on how you respond to stories and whether you are respectful towards others. Furthermore, in many of my assignments I needed personal awareness and responsibility. One of them is the sixties scoop focus project. In this project I talked about the loss of language and culture. Throughout the project, I became more aware as the project progressed. I was aware of the horrible acts done to the survivors of the scoop and became responsible for how I interpret those events. In this project, I had the responsibility of sharing the survivor’s stories, making sure their voices are heard and not disregarded, like in the past. My awareness during this project increased and had growth for future projects and discussions.

Collaborating

Button Dichotomous Key

My partner and I both came into this project late, as I was away for vacation, and she was sick. Both her and I lead each other throughout the project. Before starting the project, Sariya and I had responsibilities of finishing missing work. Fortunately, both of us finished the due worksheets and started the project. Every time there was a complication or misunderstanding, I would ask Sariya questions and vice versa. Both of us shared our ideas with one another and communicated whenever there was a clash of ideas. Unfortunately, our time to complete the project was running low, so I took the responsibility of taking it home to finish. I came up with strategies of how we could make the key better, as it was messy and unorganized. Every change I made, I communicated with Sariya first, to see if she would agree, if not we made compromises of going another direction. Overall, the experience was great on developing my communication skills. Of course, there is always room for improvement. One thing I would improve is time management. When working on the project, there was a lack of time management, resulting in me having to take home the project.
