Curricular Competencies Reflection

I feel like I grew in my story telling skills during this course. The artifact that I chose is the last leaf assignment which we had to write a backstory about a character of our choosing. I think that over the course my writing skills have improved. I was a lot of fun being able to write story. One of the best assignments that we got to do was write our own skit and then perform it. It was a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity to be creative.

Core Competencies Reflection

For my Core Competencies Reflection I chose the thinking competency. I think that I showed thinking by coming up with a solid backstory that made sense to the character I chose. I also showed thinking by helping to write the skit we created and making sure that it made sense. Next time I want to improve on getting it done faster. It took long time to finish both of the assignments and next time I want to finish them faster.

This is a picture of the mash-up lyrics we performed. It was my favorite song that we performed all year.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

I think that a musical skill I have shown with success was creating harmony and blending. During the concert the person next to me and I blended very well and created a pretty harmony. Some skills/techniques that I would like to improve on is increasing my range. I want to be able to hit the higher and lower notes. My plans to continue with music in the future is not really clear right now. I think it will be just playing around in my basement on my keyboard and guitar. Maybe a little bit of karaoke.

Core Competencies Reflection

For my Core Competency Reflection I chose to do the Communication one. Somewhere that I have used communication was when we were practicing for the performance we were all able to communicate what we liked and didn’t like about what we were performing. Something else that we were really good at communicating was the order of the songs we were going to perform. We were clear in the way we wanted to order them and then we did it and it went really well.

This assignment impacted how I have an unconscious bias to things that I don’t even realize. I hadn’t really realized how much my decisions and thoughts are unconsciously biased. For example, I have a peanut allergy so through this assignment I really recognized how much thought goes into the news I try and if I can have them or if I will react to them. This assignment has also revealed to me how many little things my family and I have in common. Sports are a big part of life on one side of my family, and I never really realized how much we have in common when it comes to things sports related. On the other side of my family food and gardening are a big part of life and I never noticed how much we have in common when it comes to that. So really this assignment opened my eyes to the unconscious biases I have and the things that I have in common with my family members. 

Core Competency Reflection

I think my experiences such as playing games with my cousin influenced my choice of sports because he helped me be competitive and want to win. Yes, I would be competitive without him but I get more competitive when we try to one-up each other with our accomplishments.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the paragraph because I communicated pretty clearly how the assignment made me notice thigs about myself that I would not have likely noticed without it.

Although I am challenged by a lot of little things, I can get through these challenges by tapping in to my perseverance and slowly but surely make it through all the little things that I find challenging.

I appreciate feedback on everything I ask about and prefer it comes in the form of honest but still kind words. Brutal honesty is sometimes wanted but if its not needed then I don’t really want it.

My Goal

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I listen to music. My goal is to stop relying on music to help me refocus and try to be able to focus without it because I will not always have access to music.

Public Speaking

I think that being a good public speaker is knowing your audience. If people say something that the audience doesn’t like it’s most likely not going to be a good speech. To be a good audience I think the number one thing is listening. If you don’t listen it’s the extremely disrespectful. The other thing with being a good audience member is having good body language. If the audience is acting like they don’t want to be there then the speaker is not going to try as hard as they can.

Collaborating Core Competency Reflection

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to talk and give each person in the group a chance to agree or disagree with what we’re doing.

I know the group is working well together when I hear us all agreeing on something and sharing different ideas.

I show that I value feedback from others in my group by listening to it and in some cases using it in projects.

If there is a disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to talk about something else and then go back to what we were disagreeing about and then try to deal with it again.

My goal is to be more clear about who is doing what within the group. I’m doing this by whenever I start a group project going over what needs to be done and then splitting the work.

Curricular Competency & Content Reflection

I think that I used analyzing and applying content by first coming up with our original list for Earth 2 and then after finding out the main points of the Industrial Revolution, changing what I think needed to be changed or go into more detail about what need to be in more detail. I learned that there is a lot more that goes into creating nations and cities than I thought. For past connections I realized that a lot of things would be different if the Industrial Revolution never happened. Kids would start working at a younger age and many things would still be done by hand. I think that in the future things are going to made by hand less and less due to the advances in technology made everyday.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is when I have a topic to just say whatever I think would make sense in that situation and don’t have a specific thing to talk about just an area of ideas

I know the group is working well together when I see and hear that we have brainstormed ideas and have written a good amount down on paper.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I take a second to stop what I was doing and just do something else for a minute or listen to music to just let my thoughts calm down and then I go back to my original task and have a better focus.

One of the ways I ensure that my group is clear on the common purpose is by going around and making sure that everyone is ok with the ideas that have been shared. If they say something else they have this opportunity to say something

My goal is to be more focused on using other peoples feedback in my work. I am working on this when I have an assignment to hand in and I get feedback from a peer. I try to change what I think needs to be changed based on their feedback.

My Advertisement

Persuasion and Advertisement Techniques

My ad is an Under Armour water bottle. It’s meant to be used by the people of Panem to either give it to their favorite tribute in the games or to keep it for themselves and not have to get up and get a refill. I used Logical and Emotional persuasion techniques. Logical because I have facts like ‘Holds 20% more water’ and emotional because you can send it to your favorite tribute and not have to stop watching to game to get a refill. For advertisement techniques I used are card stacking, eye-appeal, and special offer. Card stacking because it have little bits of information scatter around the ad, eye-appeal because my ad has a colorful background, and special offer because it put the word only in front of the price. Overall, I think my ad will catch the attention of the people of Panem and I will make life for them easier.

An example of where I took a significant risk in my thinking or the expected process was when I decided to do two side by side images in my ad. I didn’t know how it would look after I finished it but in my opinion it looks pretty good.

I appreciate feedback on my ideas and prefer it comes in the form of honest but still kind words. If it’s kind but not true or honest by not in a nice way it doesn’t work so well for me.

This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences: I try and think about the audience that will be viewing my ad and choose what images and words would work best with what I think they would like.
