My identity project, Core Competency explanation

This project highlights my comprehending and connecting skills. For this slide in particular, I had to make connections based off the meaning of the poem and connect them to how Colonialism and Western ideologies affected First Nations and identities. I also connected this slide to our two-spirit section of out unit where we talked about societal power structure and how specifically Metis people try to make them selves appear “whiter” or paler by using makeup and wearing different clothing. The term blood quantum is a term used primarily towards Metis people, it discusses the amount of “Indigenous blood” or Indigenous heritage someone has, I connected this phrase back to how western colonialism affected how Indigenous people see themselves and others and how it affects their communities.

Core Competency reflection

I can demonstrate respectful, inclusive behaviour. When talking about Indigenous identities I make sure I am educated on the proper terminology when talking about their identities and their communities. I demonstrate this in all of my projects and in the classroom as well, I want to make sure I am educated and not offending anyone. If I am unsure about any terminology, I ask or research before using it. In my assignment above, my final identity project, I made sure I researched “blood quantum” before using it, not only to better make sure I understood it but also to see how I could use it effectively in my comprehension of the poem.

Positive Learner Identity

Reading for information. During EFP 11, we have read multiple short stories, plays and our own silent reading books. During the process of reading all of these, we were asked to reflect on what we learned and explain how each piece of text impacted or reflected our own lives without explaining the events of the given text. I have learned through ought school to read for information and process it efficiently for a detailed response. This skill helped me numerous times because it made processing the text easier and responding to the questions easier.

Core Competency Reflection

I can identify ways in which my strengths can help me meet challenges, and how my challenges can be opportunities for growth. Knowing that this skill is one of my strengths is incredibly important to me because I love reading and writing, and having this as a strength has made reading and writing so much easier for me. It has benefitted me with having better written responses and better reading comprehension, however there is a draw back, such as only reading for information and not taking in all that is required. This can be a problem when we are asked to not only explain important events but also to infer about what the text could mean, either literally or figuratively.

Core Competency Reflection

Some of the ways I work to build and maintain relationships are communicating with others, making sure others are aware that they are respected, valued and making it clear to other people that I am being an active listener either by asking questions or nodding.

I respectfully advocate for my needs by communicating in a respectful manner, such as allowing multiple options, making sure it works for everyone and communicating calmly to others. By communicating my needs to others it makes it easier for everyone, especially me.

My goal

I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by… I want to get better at asking for feedback or help when I am unsure or want to improve my work. Asking for a second opinion can help reduce errors and have a different perspective weighing in can help resolve problems.

Inductive/Deductive Reasoning in Popular Games

I chose BlockBlast. How to play BlockBlast, you are given randomised blocks in different shapes. The goal is to clear the grid of all blocks. You earn points by connecting blocks and finishing a line. if you cannot put a block on the board, because the block is too big for the leftover space, the game ends and you have to restart, and you loose all of your points.

Some strategies I use to play this game is to think of the possible blocks and plan on where I should/can put the blocks. sometimes it’s very obvious on where you can put the blocks but other times it’s not, so I like to look at all the spaces I can put the blocks and see if I can clear the grid faster, with one of them.

I think BlockBlast uses inductive reasoning because I can form a prediction of what block will come next and where I can place them. This way of thinking is very helpful because it helps the game go smoother, and helps me set up the game.

Communication

During our Squid lab my partner and I worked and communicated well with each other. We talked with each other about what each of us wanted or didn’t want to do. We were patient with each other and talked through any problems that came up. We asked each other questions and made sure we both understood what we were doing before we made any incisions. My partner and I have worked together on different labs, on each lab we have been successful because we communicate well with each other and understand that we both have different skill levels. During my lab my partner and I learned the vocabulary with each other, and were able to communicate with each other using the correct biological terminology with each other. Since learning the terminology I know the correct terms for labelling and talking about the squid, such as what we refer to as “tentacles” are actually arms and the long piece is actually the one and only tentacle a squid has.

what core competencies did you demonstrate with the Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Mind Map Assignment?

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. In my Mind Map I shared a song that I love and is meaningful to me. I express that the song is about someone who is reminiscing about the memories the singer and the other person shared together in Maine. Maine can either represent a physical place where they share their memories or a mental place where their memories live. I categorised the perspectives and what I found interesting about the song in a clear way.

I think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it to. I briefly explained what each psychological perspective is to make sure that whoever sees my mind map has an idea about what each perspective is and how it connects to the lyrics I chose for the perspectives.

Core Competency Reflection

Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include asking and finding their strengths and weakness, especially when it comes to getting credible sources and relevant information, on the topic, as well as if they want to talk in front of the class, if that’s what is needed from us as a group.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the shared documents between my partner and I, we worked together to find information to help form our introduction and main point. from there we went our separate ways for our information gathering of our rebuttals but we still continued to work together and we made sure to communicate with each other, updating one another on what we were doing and if we could add stuff to each others information.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see mutual respect for each other, which can either be through group communication, individual communication or taking on jobs they may not have taken on otherwise.

Monopoly Assignment Reflection

What core competencies did you demonstrate with the Monopoly Assignment?

Core Competency: I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.

I asked questions throughout the process of making my Monopoly board. I made sure I was doing the project right but also asking questions about the material. I showed not only to my teacher but also to myself that I am an active and supportive listener and learner.

Goals for 2024/2025

To get more ideas about something I read, watch or listen to music to get more information and form better ideas about the subject. This year I will do the same because it has been working well for me, but I want to read more about certain subjects to get more ideas. 

I like to show my learning in these ways, I like to write down my ideas in a clear concise way which can help me show that I know the material. I also ask the teacher questions to show that i know the topic.  I intend on advocating for myself by using these in my classroom by writing down my ideas and asking the teacher questions.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by… I took my teachers notes and used them to change aspects of my work. I also used notes and changes my friends gave me.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is… where we used the found poem and changed the format to give deeper meaning to it.
