Core Competency Reflection

Some of the ways I work to build and maintain relationships are communicating with others, making sure others are aware that they are respected, valued and making it clear to other people that I am being an active listener either by asking questions or nodding.

I respectfully advocate for my needs by communicating in a respectful manner, such as allowing multiple options, making sure it works for everyone and communicating calmly to others. By communicating my needs to others it makes it easier for everyone, especially me.

My goal

I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by… I want to get better at asking for feedback or help when I am unsure or want to improve my work. Asking for a second opinion can help reduce errors and have a different perspective weighing in can help resolve problems.

Inductive/Deductive Reasoning in Popular Games

I chose BlockBlast. How to play BlockBlast, you are given randomised blocks in different shapes. The goal is to clear the grid of all blocks. You earn points by connecting blocks and finishing a line. if you cannot put a block on the board, because the block is too big for the leftover space, the game ends and you have to restart, and you loose all of your points.

Some strategies I use to play this game is to think of the possible blocks and plan on where I should/can put the blocks. sometimes it’s very obvious on where you can put the blocks but other times it’s not, so I like to look at all the spaces I can put the blocks and see if I can clear the grid faster, with one of them.

I think BlockBlast uses inductive reasoning because I can form a prediction of what block will come next and where I can place them. This way of thinking is very helpful because it helps the game go smoother, and helps me set up the game.

Core Competency Reflection

Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include asking and finding their strengths and weakness, especially when it comes to getting credible sources and relevant information, on the topic, as well as if they want to talk in front of the class, if that’s what is needed from us as a group.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in the shared documents between my partner and I, we worked together to find information to help form our introduction and main point. from there we went our separate ways for our information gathering of our rebuttals but we still continued to work together and we made sure to communicate with each other, updating one another on what we were doing and if we could add stuff to each others information.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see mutual respect for each other, which can either be through group communication, individual communication or taking on jobs they may not have taken on otherwise.

Monopoly Assignment Reflection

What core competencies did you demonstrate with the Monopoly Assignment?

Core Competency: I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.

I asked questions throughout the process of making my Monopoly board. I made sure I was doing the project right but also asking questions about the material. I showed not only to my teacher but also to myself that I am an active and supportive listener and learner.

Goals for 2024/2025

To get more ideas about something I read, watch or listen to music to get more information and form better ideas about the subject. This year I will do the same because it has been working well for me, but I want to read more about certain subjects to get more ideas.

I like to show my learning in these ways, I like to write down my ideas in a clear concise way which can help me show that I know the material. I also ask the teacher questions to show that i know the topic.  I intend on advocating for myself by using these in my classroom by writing down my ideas and asking the teacher questions.

CPR Reflection

My Learning of CPR

‘Cpr-Heart’. Emergency Medical Services, https://publicsafety.tufts.edu/ems/files/cpr-heart.png. Accessed 20 Dec. 2023.

CPR Reflection

I knew about CPR previously but I didn’t know what to do when someone was experiencing signs of a stroke. I know what to do when someone is experiencing a stroke and I feel more confident with my CPR skills.

The key takeaway I had was the difference between the practical and the theory. it is very different from hearing the steps rather than acting them out and replicating the real life scenario. It is easy to memorise the steps but it is harder to remember them when you’re under pressure.

it connects to the health unit we previously did because having a healthy diet and getting enough exercise can reduce the risk of heart problems.

Core Competency Reflection

I can describe how learning about CPR relates to my life…

When I was 7 my dad had a heart attack. luckily it wasn’t too bad and he was able to get to the hospital before he collapsed, but since I was so young I didn’t have the knowledge or training to help him. Now if anything happens I know I will be able to help him.

One area of CPR in which I’d like to spend more time learning is…

Practicing. I am confident in my knowledge of CPR but I am still weak in my skills. I want to get better at assessing the situation and asking for help.

One lesson that stimulated my thinking about the importance of CPR was…

When we did our practical assessment. It was easier to think about the importance of CPR when having to think it is a family member of yours. It puts it into perspective when practicing rather then just having the knowledge.

French 9 Reflection

My Progress

This year I have learned a lot in French. In Grade 7 all we did was go on duo lingo, after awhile I was able to recognise and spell words but I had no idea how to pronounce anything correctly. I would pronounce things the way I thought just by reading and looking at the words. Grade 8 was a little bit better, we did project but mostly it was people using google to translate sentences.

This year we went over things I had previously learned but I also learned a lot more. we talked in-depth about houses (ex. number of floors, rooms etc.), family, possessive adjectives relating to family and much more. I had some confidence coming into this course but not much, I have improved my skills throughout the semester and have learned a lot more.

I am proud of our French Skit.

My partner and I had to write an original restaurant skit, which includes verbs and adjectives we had previously learned. we were not aloud to have our script written out in French for our presentation. we were only aloud English cue cards, so we had to memorise all our lines. I used my class time well, we shared responsibilities equal between the two of us. I gave Ideas and my partner and I were able to translate them and add more details. we were able to get our script done within 2-3 days after getting the assignment.

Communication was a big part of creating our skit. we communicated our ideas with each other as well as telling each other when one of didn’t like something or wanted to change something. if I was going to make the skit again I would change anything, I like our script, I worked well with my partner and I had fun making and performing it.

English 9 Final Reflection

My Artifact

My Identity poem

Drip, drip, drip.

The faucet drips in the kitchen

It’s so quiet you could hear a pin drop

the racing thoughts stop

Drip, drip, drip.

The feeling of loneliness takes over

The world goes quiet, just for a moment

Overwhelming silence fills the room

The world goes back to the loud, busy city it once was

You can hear slight voices from the tv

And an angry person honking their horn

But what could have changed?

In that one moment of silence

Are you still the same person you once were?

Drip, drip, drip.

The faucet still drips

In one second your life can change

You might not feel it

Everything might look the same

But everything could be different

One minute you’re laughing with your friends

The next you’re shaking uncontrollably,

Hyperventilating but still

A tooth showing grin

Cemented on your face

Drip, drip, drip.

The sound of the dripping faucet

Engraved in my memory

Mocking me wherever I go

Curricular Competencies Reflection

During this task I learned I had to use figures of speech and sound devices to enhance my poem, and let the viewer visualise what was happening without describing it too much. Which was hard trying to tie in figures of speech and sound devices in a way that made sense to me and the reader, and trying to build your poem off of those devices.

Core Competencies Reflection

#ThinkingCC

Ways I formed some ideas for my poem was to read and think about the sound devices and figures of speech and build off of them. Talking to others about their poems and seeing what they wrote about helped me generate ideas about my poem and how I should formate my poem. Also talking daily experiences helped my write my poem. Because it’s an identity poem I focused in on certain memories/experiences which helped me form ideas.

Core Competency-Industrial Revolution & Today’s Sweat Shops & Protest Pamphlet

You have researched the treatment of children in the Industrial Revolution factories and in today’s similar situations called Sweat Shops. To do this, you examined various pictures of the treatment of and factory conditions for children working in factories in poorer countries. You also read about the treatment and conditions in the Gr. 9 Crossroads textbook. Then you read about the views of those treatments and conditions, both pro and con, by the people living in the areas where these treatments and conditions exist. Then you discussed those things and put the cons and your solutions to them. From there, you put three of your thoughts on those things into a protest pamphlet. Now, you are to examine the following core competencies and check off any three you think you have learned, used and accomplished. Put a check mark in the corresponding circle:

I did ask and respond to questions to be an active and supportive listener.

when we would share our ideas in a group I was able to ask and respond to questions a listen to people question and/or ideas.

I worked with others to achieve a goal.

I can build off of others ideas and help create a final idea.

I now understand that my safety in a textile workshop could be tied into how safety is maintained in that workshop environment.

Making sure that the safety measures they have are up to date and that they know how to work the safety equipment and that none is broken.

I now understand what is important to me in how I am treated and valued in a work environment and I can explain my values.

I understand how and why I should be treated in a work environment, I can explain why and how I should be treated and why being treated that way is important to me.

I now understand and can appreciate diverse perspectives on issues and can resolve problems and I can explain my values.

People can have differing views and opinions from myself, by talking and hearing why and how they believe or they think that way I can understand and explain my opinion and appreciate theirs. we can resolve problems you hearing both sides and taking both into consideration.

I did analyze evidence from the research I did and made judgements.

After seeing and hearing how some of the kids/workers were treated I formed opinions and judgments about their conditions.

I can now understand and tell, after examining the economic facts of factory production in poorer countries, the dangers to workers in unsafe conditions, the mistreatment of child workers in those factories and the values child workers have in those conditions and treatments, the difference between fact and opinion.

some people believed people’s opinions of how children and workers were being treated were facts and not just opinion. they thought is someone was saying it, maybe it was a close friend or trusted source, they believed what they were saying was true. some people were saying children weren’t being treated as badly as people believed and that the children were making stuff up. I can tell that children weren’t making anything up and that what they were saying was fact and what some people were saying was just opinion.
