ME-CARD Core Competency Reflection

Positive Personal and Cultural Identity Prompts

  • I do not have a very artistic or musical background as far as I know of, but I’m glad I’ve been able to pick up on these creative endeavours without it.
  • My values around self-improvement have informed my decisions around starting routines, waking up earlier than I need to, and being more productive.
  • Although I am challenged by constant distractions and incentive to look at my phone, I can get through these challenge by tapping into the activities I genuinely care about and enjoy (Piano/Guitar, Drawing, Listening to Music).

Personal Awareness and Responsibility Prompts

  • When I am sad, angry, or frustrated, music will either take my mind off of things and calm me down or fan the flames.
  • I have valuable ideas to share about why we need to make the most of our day to day lives and do so by talking about it with my friends who generally share a similar viewpoint.
  • I appreciate feedback on my drawings and art in the form of constructive criticism.
  • A daily routine helps me stay physically and mentally healthy.
  • Some short/long term goals for myself include picking up electric guitar, seeing more bands live, reading more, and getting rid of my acne.

Reflecting On My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

This year was an absolutely drastic change from Grade 8. Electives were the biggest difference in my learning experience here in Centennial. Many more opportunities had opened up, such as the option to choose the language we wanted to learn. I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish, and I jumped at the opportunity as soon as I saw the class on our sign-up sheet. ICT was a very interesting learning experience, and I’m very grateful we were given lessons on the basics of coding, how to use blender, and especially how to get around the photoshop app. Art was my favourite elective and favourite subject, I had so much fun exploring my creativity. There were many great techniques I picked up that I use in my art pieces today. I learned a lot in my non-electives too: English, Science, Math, Social Studies, and especially PE. I have a much better understanding of sports like volleyball and basketball as well as having more confidence kicking a ball.

My Favourite Website

https://youtube.com/
I use Youtube everyday longer than I’d like to admit and it is way more than a source of entertainment. I’ve used it to figure out math equations, chemical formulas, find information on a topic, and more. Without it my test, project, and homework marks would most definitely not be the same.

My Favourite Video

In English 9 we were assigned to create a voice-over on a powerpoint presentation about a book of our choice. The powerpoint and the video took a lot of time and effort but I was very satisfied with the end result.

My Favourite Image

I had a lot of fun using photoshop in ICT 9, and this image about environmental awareness was the culmination of everything I have learned. My favourite detail is the sunset sky blended with the forest fire, it conveys the message of the picture very well.

Honourable Mention:

My Favourite Quote

“Not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do is the secret to happiness.” – J.M. Barrie

Every time I found myself hating an activity or a chore, I referred back to this quote in my head. There are so many truths to this quote that I could not fit all of them on a regular piece of paper. If there was any quote I’d choose for people to live by, it’s this one.
