Core Competency Reflection

Evidence that I can acquire information about complex and specialized topics from various sources, synthesize it, and present it with thoughtful analysis can be found in… the way I collected 8 weeks of data and presented it in a way that was able to follow along. Not just what I came up with, but when I was looking for more information and research, I tied that all into my project in a thoughtful analysis.

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in… the actually presenting of my project. I thought we were going to have to present in front of the class so when we did it in small groups, I was much more relaxed, and it went a lot smoother. I was not scared to go at all, so I went second. Because I was not nervous and I knew what I was going to say, and my power point was easy to follow there was no stuttering or thinking or making anything up on the spot. I was actually excited to share about my project because it was quite unique, and I liked the way I transitioned my research information into each week.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…

If I were to do this again, I would record more numerical data because the weeks where there were no geese were very dry, and I didn’t have much to do, and it made me feel hopeless. This is when I decided to add more information so I could at least work on that, but I still wish I had more statistics to add to my research I just don’t know what, but I would like to make a chart. In terms of goals for the class, with the longer projects I would start going cross eyed with all the questions and answers so just complaining about it was enough motivation to bring me back and then I would go back and complete it. so, my goal is to try and not complain but rather take a minute in a different form like talking about another topic then go back.

Foundations of Inquiry Reflection

Presentation.pptx

  1. What is your Inquiry Question?

Why is dance not considered an applicable sport for high school credits and how can I get involved with that?

  1. Did the focus of your inquiry shift or change since you wrote your Personal Learning Plan? Explain.

My initial project was completely different before I realized I could do a project that I could make a difference in. Throughout my project I was worried I wouldn’t finish but I was reminded that I didn’t need to worry about finishing anything as this can be an ongoing thing. At one point, I considered minimizing the project to a smaller goal and impact just as something that I thought was going to be more reasonable however, I just kept going with what I had hoping I could get some answers.

  1. How was your time management? How many hours total do you think you worked on this project?

This semester I was pretty consistent with coming to class and working the full block and on the days, I had to miss, I would book in for a flex or cent time to make up. Most of this project was not waiting on me but rather the people I contacted to see what they were going to say as that is what would guide my next decisions.

  1. What resources (people, websites, apps, videos, etc.) have been most helpful?

Miss. Claldwell has been very helpful to me throughout this project. She was very supportive when I thought my project wouldn’t go any further. She ensured me that this is something that doesn’t have to be completed and what else I could do. She helped me understand and get in touch with new people that could help my inquiry move along.

  1. What challenges did you face with your Inquiry? What challenges have you overcome?

The hardest part was not knowing if the people I was actually emailing were going to respond. So far, I messaged 4 outside sources and 3 of them have been a help. However, although the third person I emailed is higher up and busier, I have yet to receive a response. The last time I messaged someone I got a response that I thought would have to shift my inquiry goal and I started to research more into that. I also kept going with my original goal to see how far I could actually get but I overcame my challenges by having a backup project that follows the same initial goals but is a smaller idea.

  1. Describe your growth of a Core Competency (Communication, Critical/Creative Thinking, Personal/Social awareness & responsibility) through this inquiry process.

I demonstrated the use of the communication core competency through the way I reached out to multiple professional outside sources. When I say professional, I mean respected people that I couldn’t email like I was texting my friend or emailing my teacher about an absence. I double checked my emails with an experienced writer to make sure it was clear what I was asking and wrote in my most professional tone with the selected vocabulary I used.

  1. How did you share what you have been learning, creating or planning in this Inquiry

I shared my project by creating a PowerPoint which I explained each step I took throughout this journey as well as some background information of me and my dance.

  1. Will you continue working on this Inquiry, or parts of it, for your next year? (Advanced Inquiry or Capstone or your own personal passion project?)

I plan to stay consistent with this project throughout the summer because if it is something I don’t have to wait until the school year to complete I am hoping to do it. I do plan to stay within the dance theme for next year though!

Spanish 10 Core Competency Reflection

Mexico Introduction Presentation in Green and Red Informative Style (1).pdf

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.

I used the communication core competency and this “I can” statement as I was able to share about this Spanish food I chose in a clear, organized and easy to follow power point. I also chose this statement because it included being able to understand the information I was sharing, and I was able to do when making my presentation in Spanish. I also used communication in this project when I had to present it. I was not in class when we did the presentations, so I came in on another day to do the presentation Infront of the teacher. This made my presentation skills hard as it was just me and her in the room so in order to get eye-contact points, I had to look directly at her who was sitting front row.

The Marrow Thieves: Novel Presentation

My Movie

Curricular Competency Reflection

How did reading a First Peoples text help you understand Canada’s past, present, and future?

By reading the First Peoples Text, I now understand what they valued and currently value and what they bring from these values into their lives and futures. Before, I knew what they stood for ideas like stories and traditions but now, I was able to learn why these things are so important to them.

b. What did you learn about the culture in the novel? You can think about history, traditions, geography, or society.

There were many specific things I learned through my novel. One major theme in my book included the idea of traveling north. I wondered why until one of the characters in the book explained that north was the direction of where the strong, fearless and knowledgeable lived. Because of this, they decided north was the direction to finding safety.

c. Why does it matter that Indigenous authors tell their own stories? Why is it important to read books from different cultures?

It matters that Indigenous authors tell their own stories because it provides another point of view from their culture. It also provides yet another resource for keeping the culture alive. It is important to read books from not just indigenous cultures others too because they can provide insight into how other cultures live. Because of this, we can be influenced and inspired. By learning from other’s stories, we can learn the history of the culture.

d. Who would enjoy or benefit from reading this novel? Why?

I believe students like me would both enjoy and benefit from reading this novel. This is because they benefit by learning about the culture, but they would enjoy this book because it teaches these deep topics with interesting themes like the ability to dream found within their bone marrow as a reason to take the indigenous people, but this is also demonstrating what used to happen. Another crowd that I believe would enjoy this novel is those who are being introduced to the history of the indigenous cultures. For the same reason as before, it introduces serious topics but, in a story-telling way.

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in… the multiple group circles with the graphic organizers that we did. During these circles, I got the opportunity to share with my classmates my connections with different articles and share how my personal novel that I read connects. Each of my points were well thought-out and planned and when I spoke, I tried to make it sound like I was sure of myself by thoroughly pronunciating my words and talking at an understandable pace. I also reviewed my sheet so I could add on to myself in the moment as well as my classmates’ ideas.

I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is… by not falling under in quality and quantity from the last journal for each journal assignment and apply each feedback from the previous one. I was also sure to check each rubric for each assignment and make sure I checked all the boxes to the best of my understanding.

IDS: Inquiry Journey

My Inquiry

 Curricular Reflection

Write about your Personal Learning Plan and what you have achieved so far.

I was able to create this scrapbook that highlights some of the most endangered species that there are. Using my personal learning plan, I was able to stay on track as well as have a clear goal of what it’s supposed to look like and the questions I was asking. A challenge that occurred during this project was originally coming up with the idea of how I wanted to present my information. I decided on a way where I could incorporate my love for crafts and showcase all the information I learned. I did not know what to expect when I started to craft the book but once I finished the first page, I knew I wanted to have the same theme for each page therefore, my Inquiry did not really “shift”. In terms of the information, I knew I wanted to include as many points of views as possible so to achieve this, I sued a “Who, Where, What, Why, How + a fun fact” format. Moving forward, I would like to have a clearer idea on how I want to present my learning rather than leaving it until it is time to physically make it.

Core Competency Reflection

I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself.

Coming into this project, I had no idea that my final presentation would look like this. When I saw the scrapbook option it gave me a better idea but I still didn’t know if I was going to be able to portray it in a successful way. Because of this, I am proud of what the final product ended up being; specifically, my drawings because I am NOT an artistic/drawing person.

I can ask open-ended questions to gather information

I chose this “I can” statement because this is what the project was about, an open-ended question where I then explored on and gathered information.

Core Competency Self-Assessment for Introductory Spanish 11

I am so curious about the Spanish language that I am excited to learn more about how I could know more of/about it to make it even better.

I chose this prompt because it relates to my future plans. I plan to take Spanish 11 next semester even if it may not be necessary. I decided to do this because knowing a second language can be beneficial in many ways. for example, Spanish is very similar to other languages so it opens those opportunities. Secondly, If I ever travel to any of the 21 Spanish speaking countries, I will be able to navigate around more than not knowing (ill also know the capitals). Thirdly, Spanish is one of the most spoken languages. Finally, when you know how to learn a language you can apply that to any other language know that you know how to learn a language.

I chose to submit my calendar because it includes various things we have learned like numbers, months, seasons and days of the week.

Law Debates

I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by the way we were able to incorporate both. For example, for the research portion, we could both work on separate things like what happens in group work. But, we collaborated during the speaking of the points and rebuttal.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is when we were forming the rebuttal. We used our opponents points and expanded on them by countering them. We listened to the original recording and thought of ways that we could expand on their points to reach a message that would benefit our side.

Although I am challenged by the arguing environment, I can get through these challenges by tapping in to the reminder that it is part of the assignment and I knew I had good points to share. Often, I would feel bad sharing my points because i didn’t want the other side to feel bad or get angry but i knew i had to do it because in the end, I was able to share very valuable points.

Reflection on my learning in Marketing and Promotion 11 course

Curricular Competency Reflection

I decided on using the BCSPCA for my company because I saw multiple ways I could incorporate animals into my ad in many ways. My next step was choosing which marketing strategies I wanted to use (Humour and Celebrity endorsement) then thought of how I could use famous well-known people/things/songs into my ad. To get my information, I looked at some examples of celebrity endorsement and saw how people used celebrities name in the ads, and I knew from there how I could do that. For Humour, when looking at the examples I saw ones suing song lyrics and thought how smart that was to use famous song lyrics into a different meaning. To create my posters, I used the website, “ Abode Spark” where I was able to customize and upload photos to my canvas. I decided to stick to the BCSPCA colour theme of blue so that is what colour I made the background. I added information like the phone number and location to make the ad more realistic as well as the logo. I then added my text; the text is the most important part of my posters because they clarify my theme and what the poster is about. Without them, you would still get what the company is sharing however, it would be a little strange because the pictures would be more random than they would have been with the text. Finally, I strategically chose these pictures because they best represent the marketing strategies I used. Some other technologies and materials I used were, Remove.bg (to remove the background of my uploaded photos), Google (to choose which photos I was going to use), and the BCSPCA website (to find other information about the company that I could include). I decided an appropriate genre and age of who to share my posters to would be all ages because it can relate to everyone in a different way. For example, young kids may see that a dog is up for adoption and ask their parents even though they may not get the references being made but they get the energetic energy they give off; secondly, if a parent is looking to get a dog for their kid, they can go through the BCSPCA where they would be saving the life of a dog and, this age would get the references made the most. Finally, although an older audience also may not understand both references (they are more likely than the little kids though) the message would still get across and I personally think if an older person wanted to adopt a dog, an older dog would be a great option for them and that is one thing that the BCSPCA offers. HOW: I would share my posters around the town especially in popular areas that have many kids of people like bus benches, malls and some billboards. I critically reflected my design to include humour in a recognizable way as well as celebrity endorsement that included why that celebrity would make sense for that position. I also critically reflected my design process to have an eye-catching design like using celebrity endorsement and a bright blue colour. The blue colour was not just to catch people’s attention but it was resonated with the colour theme of the company I chose. Some marketing goals I tried to identify was the want to participate. These ads will hopefully make people want to participate and adopt an animal from the BCSPCA because after seeing these ads they learned that it the BCSPCA is a caring, kind, friendly and positive company.

Reflect on Core Competencies

I show others that I truly value their contributions by…

I show others that I truly value their contributions by accepting and applying their feedback. Although this was not a group project, I asked my friends for their feedback and if there was anything I could make better. This was important to me because I was so used to seeing my design that I didn’t know what is looked like from an outside point of view. If I asked for feedback from someone and was defensive about it, there would be no progress made.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is…

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is getting to create my own form of advertisements from a blank canvas. Not only do I get to design what it looks like and what I can portray but I got to pick the company I used. This was beneficial to me because I learned so much in the process of deciding what I wanted to do. Because of this, I chose marketing strategies that I felt could be harder to relate to the company I chose so then I could challenge myself and learn more.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I would simply look to my friends sitting beside me and see their designs and progress and that would transfer to me making me feel inspired and motivated to work. Also, the fear of falling behind sat with me so I knew I would get a feeling of accomplishment if I finished the assignment on time. For some reason I get really hungry during this class so often to boost my mood, I grab out a small snack and by the time I get it out, it would have been enough of a brain break that I can get back to work and be even more focused with having enough class time to continue to work and finish my assignment.

Transforming Parabolas

y=4(x-5)2

y=-4(x-5)2+0

y=50(x+5)2+0

y=0.4(x+5)2-5

The black parabola is the parent function with an equation of, “y=x2“. This is the parent function because it is the standard equation of parabolas with a vertex of (0,0). Having a (0,0) vertex means that the equation does not look like, “y=a(x-h)2+k” because the “h” and “k” (vertex) are 0 so we know that when an equation does not have a number in place for h and k then it is 0. The axis of symmetry is 0 because if you were to fold the parabola in half then it would cross the x-axis at 0.

The red parabola, “y=4(x-5)2” demonstrates a transformation of a parabola that opens up rather than the orange parabola, “y=-4(x-5)2+0” which is the red one but it the reflection on the x-axis so it opens down. This is because, the absolute value or the “a” in an equation determines the shape of a parabola and in this case, it is positive so the red parabola opens up and the orange with a negative “a” value opens down. The “h” value is 5 so they are shifted to the right because the h determines where along the x (left and right) the parabola will be. For example, if the “h” value was negative, the parabola vertex (opening point) would be shifted to the left side of the graph (where the negative values are). The “k” value is 0 so they stay along the x-axis rather than above or below because the “k” value is similar to the “h” value in the sense that it determines the vertex of the parabola however, the “k” represents where the parabola is along the y (up and down) so if it was a negative number, the vertex would be below the x-axis. The axis of symmetry is 5 because if you were to fold the parabola in half then it would cross the x-axis at 5.

To describe the other two parabolas, “y=50(x+5)2+0” and “y=0.4(x+5)2-5“, one demonstrates a transformation of a parabola being skinnier and the other a wider one. This is because the “a” value like the previous equations, determines the shape of a parabola. In this case, I chose to portray how a parabola can be skinny or wide as I have one “a” value set to 50 because if a number is a>1 it will result in a skinnier parabola and I have the second set to 0.4 because a number 0<a<1 will result in a wider parabola. This is because the closer a number is to 0, the wider the parabola becomes. Another noticeable difference in the characteristics/transformations of these two parabolas is their vertex. The parabolas that I have explained all have a vertex (opening point) along the x-axis except for the blue one. This is possible because the “y” value/”k” in the equation is set at a negative number (below the x-axis) whereas the others are 0 so they do not go above or below the x-axis (but would if they were positive or negative). The axis of symmetry is -5 because if you were to fold the parabola in half then it would cross the x-axis at -5.

Self-Assessment:

1.

I was able to represent the same mathematical idea in multiple ways throughout this assignment by creating parabolas that had a connection whether that was through the same or opposite “x”, “y” or “a” value so that I could compare them and share why they were opposites or similar.

2.

Some mathematical vocabulary I used in this assignment included words like absolute value, vertex and transformation of a parabola. Although I was able to explain this throughout my assignment, the absolute value refers to the shape of a parabola and is demonstrated with the letter “a” in the equation, “y=a(x-h)2+k”. The “a” value will decide if the parabola opens up(+) or down(-) as well as if it is wide (0<a<1) or if it’s skinny (a>1). Secondly, I used the term vertex. The vertex is the opening point of a parabola. This does not determine if it opens up or down but it does decide where the starting point will be as the vertex are the “h” (x- left and right) and “k” (y- up and down) values in the equation. Finally, I wrote “transformation of a parabola” a few times. The transformations of a parabola are essentially the characteristics of a parabola. This includes where the vertex will be (where it will open), if it opens up or down and how skinny it is all compared to the standard parabola which is the parent function (how it has transformed into a different parabola(equation) from this). I found the definitions of these from not only learning them in class but as I played around with the numbers when I created my own, I was truly able to understand what affects/does what.

3.

I chose to present my parabolas in a way that was strategically chosen during the parabola-making stage where I made the format of them demonstrate how the opposite of a value/parabola would look. So I then could explain why. For example, I have parabolas that are reflecting each other on an axis as well as skinny and thick ones and in different locations on the graph so then in the reflection, I explained why they were opposites or had each characteristic.

Knife Skills Assessment.

Throughout this assignment, I was able to demonstrate different knife cuts, cutting organization skills and safety that I have learned. Moving forward, my main goal is to be able to remember all of the needed steps to have a clean and SAFE cutting environment each time. Some of these steps include having a damp paper towel under the board to prevent the board from moving too much, putting any excess waste into the bin so the cutting area does not get too crowded and having the proper grip on the object being cut as well as the knife.
