Accouting 11 Core Competency Reflection

Artifact:

Reflection:

For my I was able to succeed in accounting this year by using my creative and critical thinking. That is by far the most important part about this year of accounting as it all comes down to remembering the steps you take to balance out your sheets and make sure that you don’t make a silly number error or something like that along the way. The best example of this is a 10 colum worksheet which is basically the most complicated thing of accounting as you have to combine EVERYTHING you learn’t since day one into a single sheet which requires you to think very hard and know how to adjust your numbers accordingly because one wrong step could take you ages to find which would be very annoying. Also communication is very important as well because some of our tests/finals are done in partners so you need to communicate well with them which I feel I do well and they do the same so that plays a big part into it as well.

Spanish 11 Core Competency Self-Assessment

  1. My Artifact (My Spanish presentation about albondigas)

2. For this presentation I used my critical/reflective thinking as my core competency. For this assignment I really had to research this dish as I never even knew what it was before presenting about it or the culture it’s from at all. So I spend a good amount of time doing that and making sure the information I got on this dish was correct. Then after doing so I had to use my skills I learnt in Spanish to make this presentation which had to be all in Spanish. The most critical part I thought about on this assignment was the instructions, different flavors/ways to make the dish and the technique used to make it. So after figuring out the most common and best way to make the dish I then created the list step by step in Spanish on how to create it. That is how I used my critical thinking to do this assignment.

The Clothoid Loop – Physics 12

Explanation: Why aren’t roller roaster Loops circular?

The clothoid loop has a radius that’s way bigger at the bottom than it is at the top. That is the key to the clothoid loop being a success rather than the roller coaster failing and not going across the whole loop. The amount of curvature at the bottom of the loop is also less than at the top of the loop. These are the two main reasons behind the physics of a clothoid loop but another very important aspect of it is the velocity needing to be high enough to go across the loop as well.

Reflection:

I learnt a lot about how clothoid loops work and the science between them being able to stay in the air. I find it very interesting how roller coasters work and would like to learn more about other rides.

Life Saving Measures

I learnt a lot about the body and health this unit and here are the main takeaways I got. The first one and most important possibly taught to me was always call the police if you see someone passed out that is not responding to anything you do, regardless of if you think you’ll get in trouble they will not care about you as they want to save the life of whoever it was that is dying not the guy at the party. I also learnt about a ton of side effects of alcohol consumption, vaping and drugs that can affect you very badly. Also, it’s very important to have a naloxone kit with yourself incase you or someone you know is having a drug overdose as that can save your life possibly and the best part about it is that you can get it for free at any pharmacy so there’s really no reason to not get one. Those are some of the big takeaways I got from this unit.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

After this unit I can definitely make judgements based on what I see happen around me. I won’t panic or anything now that I learnt many of the dangers that can happen to someone I know around me and I can act fast to end up saving a life possibly too.

Bedford’s Law Graph:

Comparison Graph:

Comparison to Benford’s Law + Reflection:

As you can see above Benford’s law in simple terms means the frequency of a number to appear more commonly in the leading digit. Number 1 being the most common at 30.1% of the time while the lowest one would be 9 with a 4.6% of the time. If you compare this chart above to the data I collected you will notice that the amount of 1’s I came across were way more than any other number which matches with the chart above as Benfords had #1 as the highest frequency. As the chart goes down so does my data. The one weird thing that occurred when collecting my data was that the frequency of #8 was higher than all of the ones around it which caught me a bit off guard but besides that the data I collected seemed to match up with Benford’s Law for the most part.

I decided to collect my data from Instagram reels mainly because I check Instagram daily and it’s something that I know well so collecting data from it was very easy. The only reason that I can think of as why the number 8 occurred more is probably based on the content I watch more of on Instagram as depending on what I watch (For example hockey stuff has less likes than other stuff on Instagram because it’s not as popular on reels which could cause spread out numbers). You can use Benford’s law in multiple fields by applying it anywhere whether it comes to statistics of a country, stock markets, economy it can be applied in lots of ways across the world to be useful.

Chemistry 12 Core Competency Reflection

My Artifact

I can work with others to achieve a goal.

Explanation

Through this chemistry lab to ensure a successful result I had to work well with my partner to make sure I don’t make any critical mistakes and to help us manage our time better to complete this lab. An example of this was at the start we split the workload into 2 as I managed pouring the acids and solvents into the test tubes while my partner set up all the stuff around me like the hotplate, beakers and test tube racks. We also had to have one of us observe the reaction as we poured a solvent into a solvent to see if a ppt would form and take observations based on it so we had to be working together to make sure we didn’t miss if something forms. Another thing that might seem minimal but is quite important for labs is the cleanup process as we make sure we don’t accidently pour harmful chemicals down the drain as there is a specific chemical waste bin under the fume hood to ensure we don’t harm the wildlife and stuff so if we have doubts on whether we think it can be drained or not we can ask eachother so we do the cleanup successfully.

Reporting Reflection

My Reflection

The Writing Process

Creating my story on the cafeteria prices was quite the experience for me I learnt many things and techniques while making this story and I believe I did a pretty good job. The biggest difficulty I had to go through when making this was finding good news worthy quotes from the people that I interviewed but eventually I did get some good news worthy quotes. I overcame this by asking the students more detailed questions to get better answers that are less detailed then a “yes” or “no”. I really enjoyed using all the information and quotes I gathered and creating it into a news story I felt that it was enjoyable to make a story that felt completed and just a really good job by myself.

Core Competency Reflection

I show others that I truly value their contributions by making sure to listen when they talk and respond to the questions I ask to make them feel heard and understood.

As an active listener, I notice that I make sure to nod while people talk to me to make sure they know I value their words and opinions. This helps them give me more details to use in my stories and is overall the right thing to do in general.

I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when I can’t conduct an interview with someone or they don’t show up I got to find a way to pivot my story in another direction which can be challenging but I feel that I manage to do well sometimes.

One goal I have for myself going forward is to ask better questions and figure out how I can make my stories more interesting and eye catching so students can enjoy and read my stories more.

Chemistry 11 Titration Reflection

Before:

After:

Explanation:

Through this titration lab the goal was to mix an acid (HCl) with a base (NaOH) to create a very pale pink liquid and I was successful at meeting this goal.

Core Competencies:

  • From this lab I was most successful with using my communicating core competency skills. I was asking many questions and learning many things from this lab by talking with my partners throughout the lab. This communication helped ensuring that the lab went to plan and turned out how it should have turned out.
  • I also think I was great at using my collaborating competency. I was always doing my job on the lab while my other partners did their job and we made sure that we all did it right and didn’t make any critical mistakes doing so. If someone noticed that there was a mistake we made sure to point out on it for example if you added too many drops of acid into the base it would turn too pink and I made sure to not let that happen and we successfully added the right amount.

Self Reflection:

Overall I believe I did a good job using many core competencies to successfully complete the lab with minimal amounts of errors. There are some things I still believe I could work on but overall I am proud with how I did and how my partners did.

Math Self Assessment

What is your strength in group work?

For me my biggest strength in group work was the fact I was communicating with my group members to make sure they understood what was happening and I had to ask questions often when I was confused so I didn’t fall behind and not understand a concept.

How do you prepare for a test?

I prepare for a test by reading over all the work I’ve done from the unit I had been working on and going over and over and over again until I have mastered the formulas/concepts and that way I can expect anything on the test and know how to solve it. It worked well for me I would say there were some questions that I didn’t prepare for enough (word problems) but I think I was pretty good for the most part with my studying. The only change I would probably make is that I don’t study enough so I would probably just go over it more than I did this semester.

My Spanish Conversation

Core Competency Reflection

I can ask open ended questions to gather information because during this 1 on 1 conversation we had to talk to each other asking multiple questions about when we would go to the movies for example. To carry on this conversation you need to keep on asking questions and answering them so it all makes sense and works out.

I can reflect on my own thinking by using what I learnt in Spanish in the correct way so I know that I’m not making mistakes in my writing/pronunciation throughout the conversation.

I can develop a body of creative work overtime because for this assignment we had to be creative with how we met the criteria through this conversation and we were able to do so by extending our conversation by making it take place in different times and places.

I persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas. I do this by thinking over how I write the words in Spanish and the correct order of it because that’s the most important part about Spanish how you write the words and how you pronounce them.

One goal for myself in the future is giving, receiving and acting on feedback to progress. I can do this by taking the feedback I get from people and incorporating it into my work more often.
