Social Justice 12 Core Competency Self-Assessment
Part 1- Article
Causes and consequences
Based on the article, there are several factors that attribute towards the causes of the gender pay gap in British Columbia. Among some of the main ones are occupational segregation, whereby women are more likely to work in lower positions or -paying industries compared to men. Discrimination and bias in hiring, salary negotiations and promotion also contribute to this gap. Therefore more then average of caregiving responsibilities, such as child care and eldercare, generally fall on woman, leading to careen interruptions and deduce earing potential. In BC the consequences of the gender pay gap are very noticeable and significant. Women earning 83 cents for every dollar earned by men means they have less financial stability, struggle to afford basic necessities, and are more likely to experience poverty and economic insecurity. Addressing these issues requires systemic changes in policies, workplace practices, and societal attitudes towards gender equality and fair compensation.Part 2- Refection
Throughout this course I demonstrated the core competences of communication as well as creative/ critical thinking. Starting with communication, I feel as though through the class discussions we often partook in, they were a helpful way for me to learn and understand concepts. When we had group discussions at our table, I felt these really helped. I often contributed, and had lots of opportunity to learn. If I did not understand something or felt I was finding something difficult, I would discuss with my group and get different ideas to help me.
When it comes to creative and critical thinking, one assignment that stands out for me is the “I had a dream” poster. I felt like I did a good job in that assignment because I found a way to turn my quote into an art piece that resembles the meaning without words. Throughout the term, I consistently applied critical thinking skills, whether it was in reflections, project work, or assignments. Overall, I feel as though I learned so much new information in this class and I tried my best throughout the semester.
