Dress codes and uniforms have been researched for years and it’s quite a contentious issue. Opinions and thoughts are always going to be different depending on who you ask, regardless of gender, and this argument will long continue to be discussed, researched, and wrote about.
As we’re in school right now, I’m going to start with saying
School dress codes are not just a list of things that you can or cannot wear, they go way beyond that. It teaches people that their bodies have to be hidden.
It mainly targets girls/ women discreetly because although people may say “you can wear what you like” but at the same time they’re thinking “you should also know the line and not cross it”
People use clothing as a self-expression of themselves. People have unique styles, and they should be free to dress how comfortable they feel. Research shows when a person dresses how they like, they are a version of their best self, as it’s something they don’t have to think about and follow what everyone thinks they should be like.
One of the main problems is that schools have strict dress codes that irritate students and mainly discriminate against girls”
One rule that comes to mind is the fingertip rule (that’s when your shorts can’t be shorter, your fingertips against your legs)
It’s not girls’ fault if someone else sees them and has negative or inappropriate thoughts about them. They may just feel comfortable wearing a skirt at that length and it’s up to them.
I know of 2 cases where a friend of mine was sent home to change because they were wearing something deemed inappropriate. What about their learning in class? They had to miss lessons and catch up later just because of this school dress code rule.
I’ve noticed since coming to this school, students in all grades both male and female wear ripped jeans. Me personally, think there cool but I know of other people that talk and think they look cheap and inappropriate, especially for girls. but why? It’s just showing a little bit of skin. What about when boys wear shorts? They reveal a lot more.
Farther, talking about jeans, I read an article on blue jeans. I bet we all own a pair, but did you know, there is also another point of contention in dress code gender bias.
Male workers were able to wear jeans from as far back as 1873, but it wasn’t until 1934 – 61 years later – that a pair of jeans designed for women was even released.” So unfair.
To conclude I would like to say, in my opinion I think school dress codes are unfair. They generally tend to target female students and there is so much more pressure on them. Being a student in high school can already be quite a difficult period of life and having added pressure about how to look and dress adds more to the daily stresses of life. People should be allowed to wear what they’re comfortable in and not worry about what others are thinking.

Curricular Competencies Reflection
I am most proud of my pervasive speech since it was the first actual speech I had ever prepared and delivered. I learnt a lot while working on this assignment, including how to create a speech that flows and has crucial facts that persuade listeners. I really enjoyed creating speeches because we were allowed to write whatever we wanted, which made the project easy. I anticipate giving more talks in the future, therefore I want to improve and become a more confident reader.
Core Competencies Reflection
I believe I applied a lot of critical and reflective thinking on this task. Finding a topic to write about during the beginig it was difficult for me, but once I thought of dress regulations, the thoughts just kept flooding. It was a little easier for me to put the speech together because I had a strong enthusiasm for it.
From reading this book I feel I have understood more about characters, settings and plots. The author was very descriptive when describing characters which helped me imaged how a character would look, behave and carry themselves in their life. Despite the author not always using physical descriptions of characters, such as facial features and clothes, from the words used and the journey they took you on when reading, it helped me create an image of the main character. Sometimes when reading other books I don’t always grasp or understand the main points. While this book however, for me, it flowed, was simple and the points were clear and stood out for me. Because of this, I feel I was able follow and understand the main points which helped me summarize the whole thing. The Stargirl book mainly discusses 3-4 different settings and the story settings revolve around these areas. These were the High school hallways, the Football field and the school cafeteria. In books and literature the word mood depicts and describes how a character looks and feels. It takes a reader on a journey and brings out different emotions through different times and settings. In movies and film, mood is also very similar but can be communicated further through sound and visuals. If the plot or theme of a book or movie is sad and characters are of low mood then it can be quite sad and depressing but if its funny and characters are upbeat then it could be a comedy. I feel the mood Stargirl is Romantic, inspirational with suspense. I choose a song with Ukuleles. This is significant as Stargirl used her own Ukulele the play songs and sing Happy Birthday to everyone on their special day. From completing this project, I feel I have learnt more about plots, settings, descriptions to enhance a readers journey into a book and understanding character development. The more an author can take the reader on a journey will help them get more engrossed into detail and feelings of the story, character and get a message across.
Core Competency Reflection
I use evidence to make judgements ordecisions as demonstrated in this power point. While making this power point I went back into the book that I was reading to help find evidence, that helped finish key points and find quote that fit into the right slides. Even when I finding the right setting for the power point I went back into the novel to find some evidence of where the setting was at that time.
When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I take a 5 minute break, Put my phone away and try to complete the task. After a long period of work I often get distracted and cant re- focus again. when that happens what I think really helps me is to take a 5 minute break, put my phone out of sight after that and re-gain focus again.
I respectfully advocate for my needs by asking a question. During this project I needed a little help during time to time. So, when I did need some help, I asked my friends in class or even emailed the teacher, both answered my question which helped me complete this project.
A goal I want to focus on as I go forward
In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extendunderstanding by asking questions. When I get stuck in a group discussion or don’t fully understand what to do, I often feel to shy to ask for help. I want to work on asking questions when needed so I understand and can participate more in the discussion.
My strengths and abilities while writing and preforming my script where being able to work efficiently with my partner. We had fun as well and got everything done. I pitched in a lot of ideas about planning the skit out and our accent was slightly difficult to learn but I was willing to have fun with it.
What would you improve next time?
During the play I missed 2 lines. my partner improvised and made the play flow. I would make sure I have fully memorized the lines.
Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced online presence include turning off social media when tired or stressed. When feeling like that, scrolling on social media is not the best thing to do so having boundaries or acknowledging when to turn it off are important. Another strategy that helps me is that I like to live in the moment. When I go out and go somewhere pretty and scenic, I like to tag the location of my picture. But instead, I can admire the view without taking a photo and just take it all in.
Some of the ways I work to build and maintain online relationships are I try to stay connected regularly. I have family in England, and I can message them more often to keep in touch and check on each other. Also, I can be more understanding that people reply at various times and may have other things going on. By do not that it can help me stay more connected and pick off where we left for the next time we meet.
My online support network is helpful to me because they do so many things for me/to me, from making me happy and laugh to listening and offering advice. My friends and family are my main network and I know I can trust them and rely on them. They could be close by digitally or in a different country, but I know they will support me, help me, cheer me up if I am feeling down and guide me if I need it.
I Demonstrated this Core Competency by working in a group to brainstorm and write this paragraph. Our group collectively brainstormed the answers to the comprehension. I think we all worked well together. It was the first time I really conversed with those class friends and I enjoyed working with them. We all participated and stayed on task which helped me write the paragraph after. One thing a had a hard time with was how to get my paragraph started, however, once I stated to write, it started to flow together. I would like to get better on witting more paragraphs. I enjoy writing but I don’t always know how to get it started.
