Why Japanese

Inspiration:

My background as a Japanese person influenced my decision to take Japanese as an elective this year. I can communicate with others in Japanese and have a basic understanding of the language, but I frequently forget specific words. I am aware that there is always room for improvement, and I will take advantage of any opportunity to expand my knowledge. I like Japan as a country as well. The food and culture are both unique and intriguing. Hopefully, this class will help me learn more about Japanese culture.

Goal:

My goal in Japanese is simply to get better. One of my long-term goals, for example, is to expand my vocabulary and learn the various kanji. Short-term goals include improving reading and writing skills. I am aware of my own strengths and weaknesses, which will aid in my development. Although communication is my strongest skill, I still feel awkward when speaking Japanese. (This is especially true for native Japanese people.) If I’m not thinking too hard, I’ll mix English words into my sentences while speaking Japanese. As a result, I will work to correct this bad habit of mine.

I can apply my newly acquired language skills in real-life situations. I visit Japan frequently to see my grandparents who live there, so the more I can learn, the better. Overall, learning a language other than English can benefit your future.

Motivation:

For me, discipline, not motivation, is the key. Motivation is short-lived and will fade with time. Discipline, on the other hand, breeds perseverance. When I set my mind to something, I will do everything in my power to carry it out. What makes me the happiest is the feeling of accomplishment that comes with achieving a goal. While I will still require a healthy balance of the two, Motivation starts the journey, and discipline brings it to a close. I am committed to achieving success in this class. If I find myself struggling, I will not be hesitant to seek assistance.

How will I get better?

I believe that taking small steps at a time will help me achieve my goal of speaking, writing, and reading more fluently. For example, simply listening to/watching Japanese television and anime will help improve vocabulary and listening skills. I’ll also set small weekly/daily goals for myself to work toward. For example, in my spare time, I will try to learn 10-15 new kanjis every couple of weeks, read a book, and complete some online worksheets.
