I demonstrated communication competency by explaining my topic and getting audience engagement, demonstrated by the numerous questions asked. I did this by prepping properly and being confident in myself to create an interesting presentation.
I demonstrated critical thinking by processing, understanding and reflecting on the 3 movies that made up the majority of my presentation. This was demonstrated when I explained in depth how I felt about them and how they lack passion, making them less like true art and more like slop.
The artifact I chose is my Comida project where I learned and explained Jugo de Naranjilla, or Naranjilla juice.
I demonstrated Communication by creating a visually appealing presentation to explain what my food item was, and by presenting this project I demonstrated my ability to explain ideas to others in Spanish. Ms. Alvarez allowed me to present to her alone due to my anxiety which really helped, but because I was still nervous I spoke very fast, which created some errors as I was not used to pronouncing words at that speed.
I demonstrated Critical-Thinking in this project by researching about my food and understanding its significance for the cultures that use it. I also asked for help when I needed it and used all the resources that I had access to. During this project I learned a lot about my food and learned about Spanish sentence structure more than I already have.
The artifact I chose is the Fetal Pig Dissection Lab because despite missing multiple days due to illness my partner and I were able to complete most of the labelling.
Communication: This lab I demonstrated the communication core competency by working with my partner and sharing our ideas together. I showed communication and collaboration with this artifact by working with my partner to simultaneously label parts of the pig to work faster than we could alone. I was able to share my ideas successfully during this lab when I used my knowledge to explain where the various parts of the umbilical chord and vein so that my partner understood the differences. By ignoring our differences during the lab and focusing on the work we were able to collaborate successfully and complete as much of the lab as possible with our lost time. I will continue developing this skill in the future by working to not only ignore our differences, but try to connect in other ways when I have disagreements with group members.
Critical Thinking: This lab I used critical thinking to understand and locate organs in the pig by using my logic and understanding of the human body. This was best shown when looking for the kidneys, as I used my previous knowledge and critical thinking to recognize what they looked like (little beans) and to locate them (pretty low down in the torso). I used feedback to improve my dissection when, at the start I did a very shallow cut into the pigs head, but after advice from another student and Ms. Chew I made a much deeper incision to properly separate the jaw. I did not use much creative thinking during this lab due to its nature.
This lab I demonstrated my communication core competency by working well with my partner and asking others for and giving others help when needed. By doing this I completed the lab in a reasonable amount of time with no human errors.
This paragraph write shows that I can analyze evidence to make judgments because I had to understand the ads that were given to us so that I could write a detailed paragraph. I have worked on this competency throughout the term so far and I believe my skill in this area has improved greatly. The second core competency this paragraph shows is looking at what different groups of people have in common and don’t have in common. This text shows that I have competency in this area because I am looking at how different people are affected by similar things (MJ’s kids and how they individually are affected by what happened to them) as well as looking at this from the perspective of those who are doing the separation (AIM and adoptive parents.
When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I take an extended break from my work, but my goal is to better limit the time I spend on breaks when I have important things to get done. I will do this by setting alarms for myself instead of thinking I will know when I should stop.
This project showed my critical thinking skills by my planning of my living arrangements as well as my meals and my car expenses. I was able to afford to fully furnish my apartment with enough furniture and all the necessary parts of a first apartment. With tight budgeting, I was able to afford to finance a car with a solid down payment, and still put $10,000 into a savings account.
This picture shows my dissection of a squid in the Animals Unit.
Core Competency Reflection
Communication:
I used communication in this lab by following the instructions given for the order of cutting, as well as helping others who may have missed the instructions. I was able to help others by explaining clearly what was required, as well as pointing to the specific organs and lines that we were supposed to cut. At the end of the lab when we were preparing the squid to be calamari I helped others understand what was expected to be eaten and what was to be discarded.
Thinking:
I used critical thinking during this lab by properly cutting up the squid, and properly identifying the sex of my squid without being told. I was also able to demonstrate my critical thinking skills by showing my competency when it comes to dissections, as well as the anatomy of mollusc’s. During the lab I used my thinking skills to discern the different organs of my own squid, as well as helping others discern what they were looking at.
Personal Social:
I have a sense of personal and social competency from this lab as I was able to help others, but also ask for help when I needed it, which is has been a weakness of mine in the past, and it seems to be fading as time passes. The fact that others asked me for help also shows that others consider me trustworthy and they feel comfortable asking for my help, which can be scary. I am proud of my dissection because I put effort into it, and the results show that as I got 100% on the lab.
I used communication when creating this artifact when I planned out the script with my partner. We shared our ideas, and by listening to each others ideas we were able to finish the script in one class. This project was presented to the class, and during this I demonstrated communication by speaking clearly and with proper pronunciation. The presentation was in Spanish, but because we have done so many of these at this point, I am generally confidant on my speaking, the part that stresses me is the presentation of my work, because I have a crippling fear of public speaking.
I can statements
I can work with others to achieve a common goal by expressing my ideas as well as listening to my partners.
If there is disagreement in a group I find it helpful to listen to all perspectives, if there is an odd number vote, if there is even I try to do what will make us do the least amount of work.
I make an effort to include missing voices / perspectives by asking everyone what they think we should do, and continually making sure everyone is on the same page throughout the project.
I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this project when after researching multiple topics with little results, I decided to do a well documented thing to study as it would be easier to get the information needed. Surprisingly, finding accurate data’s for country populations is difficult because it has to little data recorded.
· I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by choosing the topic to study, as I had already started creating the presentation for the original topic, but after weighing my options I realized that it would make more sense to do a slightly easier topic and restart then waste time on a bad final product.
My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include finding reliable websites, for this topic there are many as i previously mentioned it is a well documented time period. My other strategy is called “spending hours researching and fact checking to make sure i use reliable data” and you will never guess what it entails. The day we decided on this topic I went home and worked on the research for about 3 hours just to make sure it was reliable.
As an active listener, I notice that I connect things that I hear to topics that I am interested in. An example of this is earlier in the semester when I asked about 3D graphing after discovering the new option in Desmos. In my Chemistry class I also ask many questions because the topics interest me.
A titration is a technique where a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. The concentration in this lab was using NaOH with a concentration of 0.1M to determine the concentration of HCl. The endpoint or equivalence point of a titration is the point that signifies the end due to a change in the colour of the solution. To know the endpoint of a titration wait for the colour to change and stay the same for at least 30 seconds. My results had an average volume of NaOH used as 14.07mL.
In this lab i demonstrated communication in many places, but the most important was asking for help when needed from my classmates and lab partner. this allowed the lab to run successfully for us as we had good communication which lead to proper planning and allowed us to get over roadblocks easier. I demonstrated thinking to problem solve when needed, and to fill in gaps of knowledge in case a piece of information was missed due to my hearing loss.
