Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication CC

During the fetal pig dissection, I collaborated with my lab partner and peers to successfully identify all of the structures in the pig. During setup, I would get the pig and prep it for dissection, and my partner would get all the dissection materials we needed to get started as soon as we could. When it came to the dissection part, we would take turns with using the scalpel and make sure to remind each other to cut away from themselves. In this way, we both stayed safe and got a lot out of this learning experience. When identifying structures, we started with the more obvious anatomy, and then set out to find more difficult structures. With a combination of the fetal pig diagram and instruction sheet, we could find many of the structures ourselves. In some cases, we collaborated with different groups to understand other structures that we may not have found by ourselves. By bouncing ideas around, it made it easier to make more educated guesses and combine our background knowledges. When it came to cleanup on every lab day, my partner and I allocated roles to get the job done quicker. I was always in charge of wrapping the pig and wiping down the table, while my partner cleaned up the equipment with soapy water. By collaborating and sharing ideas, my group was able to identify all the structures on our list over those 4 days.

Thinking CC

I used my critical and reflective thinking to transform what I saw in the demo into my own specimen. Though each pig was different, I used the demonstration as a guideline and altered the procedure to my own pig, since it was smaller than the demo pig used. Using my knowledge of previous structures identified, I could use that knowledge to identify structures more complicated but related to the original structures I know about. Whenever I got labels wrong, I listened to the feedback and reflected on the problem. Then, I would rethink and adapt my thinking to draw new, more educated conclusions. Learning by my mistakes through trial and error, I was able to identify more structures and gain valuable knowledge from this experience. Now, when I learn more about the structures that I identified, I am able to have a visual image from what I learned and better understand its location in respect to other anatomy in the body.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility: How I Manage School Related Stress

^ Music helps me manage my stress- especially if the subject doesn’t involve too many words. Calculus homework is the best pair with music.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I take a short break and grab a snack or some ice water. It helps me calm down and wakes me up a little- I find myself working more efficiently after I take a break

I can prevent some school-related stress by organizing my schedule in my head and calendar so I don’t find myself cramming assignments the night before. I try to finish what I can ahead of time because I know that things might come up and I might not have time later.

When distractions are getting in the way of my work, I can put my phone away to charge and focus on the task ahead of me. I use music as a way to keep myself entertained and motivated.

When I am feeling anxious about a test, I can calm myself by realizing that one bad result won’t change the rest of my efforts. My life will keep going the same as it always was even if I get an unexpected result.

Favourite Recipe

Baked Feta + Tomato Pasta

Making and Sharing Reflection

Baked Feta and Tomato Pasta was my favourite recipe because I found it the most delicious. I always start with sweating the onions, since they need awhile to become transparent and cook properly. To be the most efficient, I preheat the cast iron while I’m cutting the onions, before any other vegetable. After I cut them, I put them in immediately and stir with the olive oil to coat. For this recipe, we used lots of feta cheese for a creamy, flavourful sauce. After adding the tomato and Feta, we baked it in the oven. My group worked together to divide the roles to ensure we had enough time to eat the meal after. We all tasted and seasoned to see if we needed more salt, pepper, or pasta water for the sauce.

Core Competency Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in…

When I communicate with my groupmates to allocate roles before we start cooking. We make sure that everyone has something to do and everyone knows their instructions.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by…

Thanking them when they help me or remind me to do something. It gets busy in the kitchen, but when someone goes out of their way to do extra work that helps the group, it’s good to appreciate their contribution.

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I…

Try to start conversation and get to know a little bit about them. It helps to know the person you’re working with for the best collaboration and understanding of each other.

As an active listener, I notice that I …

Write down notes as the teacher is talking. Since it’s impossible to keep everything in mind while in the kitchen, it helps to write notes down on the recipe so that if I’m unsure, I can refer to my notes,

My Goal: Some things I think about before dividing tasks among group members include…

Before we allocate roles, it’s important to see what people are most comfortable with or want to challenge themselves with. If they always do the mise en place for veggies, maybe they want to marinate the chicken next time. I want to ask them and see what they want to do.

My work: Green Grass, Running Water Presentation

Curricular Competency Reflection

Core Competency Reflection

Evidence that I can acquire information about complex and specialized topics from various sources, synthesize it, and present it with thoughtful analysis can be found in this presentation analysis of the book, Green Grass, Running Water by Thomas King. Through finding evidence in the book, and considering the thoughts of my group members, peers, and teacher, I created an analysis of Lionel supported by the evidence of direct quotes in the book. I discussed with my group members what we wanted to focus on in terms of Lionel’s storyline and how we were going to show that in our presentation. While I wasn’t too familiar with two of my group members, I got to try and communicate with them and divide our roles evenly. One of those group members was willing to reach out to me as well and we collaborated well on the project, exchanging contact information. While there were some miscommunications, we got the final project working, and I’m happy for that. We couldn’t get everyone in the group working, but I managed to take on the responsibility of their role. With my efforts and my other groupmates helping as well, we were able to give a fulfilling, final presentation.

Critical/Reflective Thinking

During lab 20G, I created a primary standard solution of oxalic acid that was 0.0500M with 250.0mL. Using this, I titrated this with NaOH of unknown concentration. Finding the amount of NaOH needed to make the phenolphthalein turn light pink in solution with the oxalic acid, we could calculate the concentration of the NaOH. Our first trial, we overshot the titration and the solution turned into a too dark pink, but from this trial we were able to learn about when we should expect colour change for our next trials. Using our newfound information, I was able to reflect on my thinking and be more careful for our next trial. This trial, we found that our solution turned pink too fast because the excess base that was on the edges of the erelynmeyer suddenly turned our solution too basic. I analyzed our problems, and for the next two trials, made sure to rinse the sides of the flask with water periodically. Using the insight we gained from our first few trials, we could change our thinking and managed to get two light pink titations that agreed within 0.1mL of each other.

Using methods shown in class, I was able to use my knowledge of exponential, parabolic, linear, and sine/cosine functions to create a self portrait in desmos using graphs alone. Through trial and error and changing a,b,c, and d values, I could transform the graphs to how I would like, using restrictions to further manipulate the function. Each feature of my self portrait was created though critical thinking, finding out new ways to manipulate graphs as well as challenging myself to use functions I wasn’t as comfortable with. Overall, being able to reflect and create a final project with my knowledge gathered in Pre-Calculus 12 was a learning experience, and I’m glad I got to show my learning through this project.

Physics 11 Critical Thinnking Reflection

During our circuits unit in Physics 11, we did a mid-unit quiz to test our understanding. While I missed a large portion of the unit, I got to learn a lot from correcting my mistakes on this quiz, writing explainations where I had concepts I missed and improved on them. One of them was that I0 was calculated using the total resistance rather than the R1, something that I did not learn before making the mistake. In part c, where after we found the V1, we could find V2 and V3 by subtracting V1 from the V0. According to kirkoffs law, the voltage should add up to the V0, so I knew the remaining was for the parallel part of the circuit. In parallel circuits, voltage is the same, so V2 and V3 were both 2.4V By reflecting on my mistakes, I can better understand where I’m lacking in understanding and should work to improve on.

Core Competencies – Marketing 11

Artifact

When I learned about the AIDA model in class, I was amazed by how many companies actually use it to market their new products. In this assignment, I chose to research Apple AirPods and their marketing campaign. Seeing companies I have always experienced promoting products using the AIDA model was interesting and shows the effectiveness of it. Through awareness, interest, desire, and action, Apple promotes their products effectively and harbour many customers because of it. Another example would be the Barbie movie promotion. When I was learning about the AIDA model, it was about the time the Barbie movie came out and was promoting. Being able to see their tactics in their marketing made me feel like I was learning something meaningful in marketing and promotion.

Leadership Core Competency Edublog Reflection

Qualities and Skills

One of the leadership qualities I believe I possess is mentorship. Mentorship is the act of helping and developing their team members skills, and I believe it’s an important part of what makes me a good leader. I am always glad to help when my team members come to me about it, and always aspire to be someone who is relliable and trustworthy to approach with problems. An example of this would be my peer tutoring that I have been commited to since grade 10. Encouraging and building confidence in my tutees skills in math is rewarding and I’m always happy to do whatever I can to help. A skill I also think I possess would be crisis management, the ability to stay calm under pressure. While I do admit that being under pressure is stressful, I like to calm myself down and stay calm so that the people around me will feel calm. An example of this would be in group projects where things don’t go as planned and we have limited time to rethink our project. Rather than panicking and wasting time, I like to talk things over and propose a new idea that would fit our timeline and project criteria. I also want to improve on things and one of the qualities I would like to do better in would be courage. While I can speak out on my views and opinions in settings where I feel comfortable, I would like to gain the courage to speak out even if I didn’t know everyone in the setting and feel a bit lost. A skill I’d like to work on would be motivational skills. This is an ongoing goal I’ve always been trying to do, since I know just a few words of encouragement can make a big difference in a team member’s attitude and productivity. Small things that make people feel like they’re contributing and important can make a big difference in team connection.

Ability to Work with Others

I think that I can work with others to complete a common goal and taking a leadership and member position in these situations. Proper work allocation can help keep everyone on track, and check-ins with progress helps us keep track of things happening in the project. Having these can help ensure proper time management as a team and setting due dates for our team means handing the final product in on time. If other members want to take a more active role in leading, I am happy to step back and let them do their thing, but I also do not mind taking charge when no one else wants to. I am happy to be flexible and change plans for the good of the team.
