FMPC 10 Core Competency Self-Assessment

  1. A) Relations and Functions Assignment

This Assignment was enjoyable because I had to think creatively to use my data to make graphs and it related directly to real-life values because I graphed a set of data which is something that I can carry with me into the future for things such as money management, I can take the amount of money I spent each day in a month and graph it which would help me budget my monthly expenses and find more efficient ways of saving money, which would help me look at my personal responsibilities better and make me more aware of how I spend my money, I also learnt how to effectively communicate sets of data through various forms of graph.

R5 – Self Study

Reflection:

Pros: You can study at your own pace and the order that you want, (more freedom), you can learn a more casual way of speaking, (slang).

Cons: You might not know where to start, you might not figure out the formal way of speaking and might find it difficult because you don’t know how to get help.

I spent a lot of time learning the grammar and the different tenses and how they change sentences, I found it interesting how there were so many different ways to say the same word in Japanese and how different they were contextually when put in sentences, something that I would like to learn would be more kanji so that I can get a better understanding of Japanese texts and songs, the best way for me to do this would be to learn kanji and try to read more Japanese or visit Japan to further expand my knowledge on Japanese culture.

I will continue to improve my Japanese over the Summer break by talking to my Japanese friends and people in Japanese, and I will use Duolingo to retain my knowledge and expand it as well.

If I could go back in time my advice to myself would be to use Duolingo as it was really helpful I found that the order it thought things and how many times you could do the same exercise and have it be different thought me a lot of new words that we haven’t learnt in class and it also helped me remember the letters better.

Guitar Final Reflection

TK live

Performance/Activity

Something that I worked on during this course was the outsiders blue song, as we played it with two other people the reason I think this helped me the most was because it helped me with my timing as well as being able to help my partners understand the rhythm which helped me get a better understanding of music and how to combine instruments together.

A. Curricular and Core Competencies Reflections:

What are some guitar techniques and musical skills you have shown success with through this chosen experience?

I learned how to improvise better when we used scales in the songs to try and create something ourselves.

What are some skills and techniques you would like to improve on and how will you do that?

some skills that I would like to improve on would mostly be improvising over songs, as well as learning music theory so that I am able to learn other instruments as well, I would also like to learn how to make my picking more efficient so that I can play fast solos, I would also like to improve my playing speed.

What are your plans for continuing with playing guitar in the future?

I will continue to learn how to play guitar and pickup more instruments in the future such as violin and piano, my goal is to be able to make/create my own music incorporating different techniques from my favorite artists.

B.Thinking

Share the experience of critical/reflective thinking for your activity (Consider strategies you used to solve a problem, how you analyzed evidence to make decisions or draw conclusions, how you used feedback to improve, how you conducted investigations into topics, and what you would improve on for next time).

When we did the first group song, He’s a pirate, it went well but the one thing i did not focus on was getting their timing right, so when we did the outsiders blue I played the rhythm and corrected as many mistakes as I could and I tried a different approach where i made them practice the parts that they were good at and then made them switch their parts at the end so that they would have to play the harder bit, that way there fingers would get more used to playing the song, then I switched it back and had them play their original parts which made the song easier to play for us.

Minecraft Renewable Energy Project

Our Project and what it was

The type of renewable energy source we picked was wind energy, the source of power for our whole city was a windmill, the electricity generated from the windmill was taken and the voltage was increased through a series of step up transformers and then distributed to the homes in our city.

Communication

Our group did well even though we ran into multiple problems due to our schedules we were able to set a clear goal and split up the tasks well which led to our ability to finish the project to a good standard before the deadline, even when we ran into problems such as coming up with different forms of energy that we can use we were able to add new sources such as HVAC’s, etc. .

Thinking

Jeros’ ability for creative thinking really helped us solve some of the problems that we had such as figuring out a way to portray the inside workings of the windmill as he showed us a mod that we could use to help us which is why we were able to make a working windmill, as well as recording the video when we ran into a problem.

Personal + Social

I contributed quite a bit to the project as I had made the buildings on the map and the power grid, what I learned from this project was that I need to split the tasks after I figure out each members strengths and weaknesses as well as to look at problems from a different perspective, (i.e. thinking out of the box), as that gave us some good results that were somewhat unconventional.

R4 – School Life

How does school in Japan compare to Canada? Is there anything they do in Japan, that you wish we did at Centennial?

In Japan high school tends to have less clubs and subjects than most school’s in Canada, and schools in Canada have less rules, less strict, so there is more freedom with choice in Canada. Something that I would like to have in Centennial that Japanese high schools have are uniforms because I think its easier to just wear something premade rather than take time to select clothes.

Do you think that students should have more responsibilities at school like cleaning duty? Why?

I think its better because it will teach people about the importance of cleaning up and will impart good habits onto them when they leave high school and let them turn out as better people in society in the future.

How lucky are you in じゃんけん?Would you be able to snag leftovers?

I’m pretty lucky I think I would be able to snag leftovers.

R3 – Japanese Mascots

Do you like the idea of having a mascot for your city? Would it work here or is this something that can only exist in Japan?

Yes, I like the idea of having a mascot for the city so that it makes boring day-to-day activities fun, when you go to your local city office provincial/governmental offices, having a mascot there helps change the mood and helps people feel more relaxed they also work better with kids as they will be less afraid or nervous, they also help the businesses and people directly by allowing the residents of the city to use the mascot it increases the number of tourists that they get, I don’t think that this could only exist in Japan, my reason being that if they added a mascot here people would love it, and if I had the chance to add a mascot I would do it.

What is the most important factor of a mascot? Appearance, popularity, personality, activism, revenue??

The most important factor of a mascot is their Appearance, activism, and popularity. The mascot has to appear nice so that kids like it and they have to support a good cause because having a nice looking mascot that has no meaning wouldn’t make any sense because the mascot has no goal so people cant relate to it, and popularity is important as it shows whether or not people like it or relate with it, having a mascot with none of these means that the mascot isn’t well-liked/received by the people.

Do you have a favorite mascot? Why? (you can browse all mascots from the Mascots by Ranking link)

My favorite mascot is TKPG (Tk penguin), its the mascot of the Japanese band 凛として時雨 ( ling tosite sigure), the reason that I like this mascot is that I feel as though it is funny to have an animal that people see as calm representing the band and their playing.

Linear and Non-Linear Equations

Linear Equations:

2x-3y=12

The equation for this graph is 2x-3y=12, which means that this graph is linear because the equation for the graph follows Ax+Bx=C format, You can also tell that the graph is linear because it goes in a straight line.

y=1/3x-2

The equation for this graph is y=1/3x-2, which means that the graph is linear because the equation for the graph is in y=mx+c format, You can also tell that the graph is linear because it goes in a straight line.

Non-Linear Equations:

The equation for this graph is y=square root x, Which means that the graph is not linear because the equation has root (exponent) in it and does not follow, y=mx+c or Ax+Bx=C, You can also tell that the graph is not linear because it does not go in a straight line.

y=(x+1)(x+1)

The equation for this graph is y=(x+1)(x+1), which means that it is not linear as it ends up having exponents, and does not follow y=mx+c or Ax+Bx=C, You can also tell that this graph is non-linear because it does not go in a straight line.

How to make the Non-Linear equations Linear:

For the equation, y=square root x, you can make the equation linear by removing the exponent, (square root).

For the equation, y=(x+1)(x+1), you can make the equation linear by removing the brackets (x+1) and making it y=x+1

self-assessment:

I explored mathematical ideas using technology when I looked at the different ways the graphs turned out by changing the values in the equation.

I analyzed data and used criteria to draw conclusions when I was proving whether or not the equation was linear or non-linear I used the data given from the graph, and the equation to look and see if any of them followed the correct equation or went in a straight line.

I justified my conclusions with evidence once I figured out if the equations were linear or nonlinear, and I showed how you could reformat the non-linear equations and remove exponents, powers, and square roots to make the equation work as a linear equation.

R2 – Traditional clothes

When do you have to dress up for events in Canada? Did dressing up make the event more special? Why?

I only recently moved to Canada so I can only speak about what events I had in the UAE, yes we dressed up for certain events in the UAE especially for national day people would come to school or go to different places to celebrate the national day while wearing clothes that had the color of the flag, ie. black, red, green or white, or they would come to school wearing traditional clothes such as kandura and abaya, yes dressing up made the events more special because everyone regardless of their nationality celebrated national day there were alot of festivites, such as fireworks, laser shows, water fountain shows and many other traditional dances, clothes and various things displayed, I dressed up for my primary school graduation in graduation robes and we threw our caps in the air which was fun.

When you have to dress up for events, what do you usually wear?

I usually wore the colours on the flag, if it was for another event i would dress up according to what the event is, either formal or casual, sometimes if i was going to celebrate an event that required traditional clothing i would wear traditional clothes.

Search traditional Japanese clothes and pick your favourite. When would you wear this in Japan, what event would you wear this to in Canada?

I really like the look of Yukata, I would wear it for a summer festival in Japan, I would wear Yukata when it would be Canadian national day adorning the colors of the flag, because it would be celebrating the different cultures that came together to transition Canada into what it is today.

R1 – Independent Children

Ishen.D

How old were you when you started doing chores, do you do chores?

I started doing chores as I became older such as cleaning my room and making sure the curtains in the house were closed and doing my homework, my parents didn’t force me to do chores the only thing they asked of me was that I finish my homework and study, when I was younger maids took care of me and my sister so I didn’t have to do chores.

Do you think that children should grow up with Japanese ideals of independence?

I do believe that having Japanese values of independence is good, but I feel as though it depends on where you live maybe the area you live in isn’t that safe then you should teach your kid when you are with them, I do believe that the Japanese values for independence are good because it teaches kids that they can do things themselves and don’t have to rely on others to much.

When did you first use transit by yourself, go somewhere on your own, go to school by yourself?

I used to go to school on the school bus my parents drop me at school on their way to work or I commute by myself from home to school and back, I don’t have any problems with commuting myself.

Why Japanese?

Inspiration:

I like watching anime and listening to music, I was interested in the various meanings behind words and how they can change depending on the context, I was interested when a band I really liked had various meanings to their name depending on who you asked and I wanted to learn the language to be able to understand the various meanings of the words.

Goal:

I want to be able to understand the lyrics in Japanese music, watch tv shows/movies without subtitles, I want to be able to speak and read Japanese as I want to travel to japan in the near future, I also want to be able to help my friends who sign up for this course next year.

Motivation:

I’ve already signed up for the course i will never leave my brothers behind, i will stay till the end oorah, if I am struggling i will spend extra time asking the teacher or my peers for help and I will use tutorial time accordingly if i require help.
