Career Life Project Presentation

Curricular Reflection

Careers was a pretty entertaining course. We learned how to plan out our future, what jobs we want, future education plans, how to finance and budget your income, how to dress for and do an interview and more. Presentations about subjects like the 20-30-50 rule, the need for tradespeople in B.C., workplace safety and the protection of young workers really stuck with me and changed the way I saw my future career. I now have a lot more different goals and priorities now that I have learned from this class. I’ve started looking at apprenticeships now instead of university, and looked at companies and positions related to trades I want to do.

Core Competency Reflection

I can develop a body of creative work over time in an area of interest or passion.

The presentation I made is probably one of my favourite pieces of work I got to do, purely out of passion and interest. I love cars so I talked about mechanics, which is also why I talked about our school’s auto shop, which I’m currently taking classes in and possibly an apprenticeship at the school as well.

I can examine evidence from various perspectives to analyze and make well-supported judgments about and interpretations of complex issues.

In the presentation, I had an interview with Nathan Korstanje, a service planner for Coast Mountain Bus Company. The in-person interview and then observations made after demonstrated a clear view and analyzation of Nathan’s perspective on his current and former job. I feel I used these observations in a good manner with the rest of my presentation as well.

In familiar situations, I cooperate with others for specific purposes.

Getting the interview with Nathan was a good effort of collaboration too. It took around a week and a half from the first email I sent him, but eventually it happened. I even went to his house in Vancouver by Kitsilano, but he wasn’t there. I had to leave, and so I got audio files from him answering my questions, but in the end I went to his office and got an interview with him in person. It’s also nice to add this attacks my ability to persevere.

I can explore.

When looking at a future career, it is important to explore the options. Which is why I did around 15 occupation quizzes on MyBlueprint. Even then, one of the two that I covered in the main presentation, I had determined not the greatest match for me after looking at some of the factors put into it. Not everything always just works perfectly the first time.
