Semester Reflection

Ethical Judgement:

  1. What is your new answer to this question?  

After taking social studies 9, my opinions have changed on the question “when our leaders make laws, their #1 priority should be __“

  1. What did you think before?  

My answer on the first day was that leaders should prioritize treating everyone equally. I chose this because I thought that some people being treated differently due to things like race, gender or sexuality is unfair.

  1. What specific ideas, skills, activities, or information can you take from this course and connect to this question? Give a precise example and explain.  

Things that I learnt from this course that connect to this question is learning about citizens in France who had been struggling to provide for their families, and make money. This connects to the question I chose because though the average citizen wasn’t being treated well, they were all being treated equally.

  1. How did this course change or add to your thinking about this question?  

My opinion on this question now is that leaders should prioritize keeping everyones freedom more than anything else. I believe they should prioritize freedom because citizens need to be treated well, and have the ability to do or believe in what they want.

Core Competency:

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions, as demonstrated in my ADL project since I had to argue with my partner hers and mine statement. I had to make researches on why agree with what I picked.

I can examine and evaluate to improve my own work; evidence of that is when I get feedbacks on what to change or improve on. I would work on in and fix what needs to be fixed to make it better.

An example of where I built on someone else idea is when I did my ADL project and included my partner’s research for our argument, for instance, I was building on other people’s ideas. I took advantage of her research and used her ideas and my own ideas to build my portion of the script.

Nutrition Reflection

1. a. What are two things that surprised you?

    There are two things that surprised me after filling out the Daily Lifestyle Tracker booklet for a week. I noticed that I don’t get enough physical activity and hydration. These are both very important parts needed in a daily life.

    b. What are your strengths?

    My strengths are being able to socialize and connect with people. The Daily Lifestyle Tracker tells me that on weekends I always have plans with people I enjoy talking and hanging out with. I love being around people because I don’t like being alone.

    c. What are areas that you can improve upon?

    Areas I definitely need to improve on is drinking water. I don’t like drinking water so I mostly won’t drink water unless I’m at a restaurant or sick. This isn’t good for my health, so I need to get into the habit of including water into my daily life. I also need to improve on getting more sleep. 8-9 hours is recommended for teenagers but I only get about 6-7 hours since I always sleep late.

    d. What did you notice when you compared your nutrition weekdays to weekends?

    I get more nutrients on weekends since I don’t have to rush out of the house for school. I have time to cook unless I have plans In the morning. On weekends, I wake up at a later time so I eat brunch instead of breakfast.

    e. How much sleep do you get? Please differentiate between school nights and weekends. Include any reason why you donโ€™t get much sleep. (ie โ€“ addicted to video games, last minute studying etc.)

    For school nights, I sleep mostly from 12am-1am and wake up at around 7:40. Whereas on Saturday, I slept at 3am-4am and woke up at 10am. I usually sleep the latest on Friday and Saturday’s since there’s no school the next day. I get about 6-7 hours of sleep on a daily basis. The main reason I stay up late is because I like to talk on the phone and text people.

    2. a. What are your takeaways from this unit? Was there anything you learned that surprised you?

    One of my biggest takeaways from this unit is how much nutrition impacts overall performance, energy, levels, and long-term health. I was especially surprised by the discussion on plant-based diets for athletes. Before watching Game Changers, I thought that high level athletes needed meat for protein. However, learning about plant-based sources of protein and their benefits, such as reducing muscle fatigue and improving stamina, made me realize that a well-planned plant-based diet can be just as effective as a meat-based one.

    Core Competency Reflection

    I can work well with others to achieve a goal. When working with others it’s about teamwork. Splitting the task into sections makes it easier to complete. Like how my group split the questions needed to answer for the diet research. We all researched different question and put all answers on a document in a efficient way.

    I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. Whenever someone’s talking, I always turn my full attention on them to make them feel heard and understood. I contribute to the conversation and give my opinions and to add on.

    I can tell the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are statements that are proven right. On the other hand, opinions are beliefs or judgements made. It’s a statement neither true or false but what you believe in. When researching about the diet, I found lots of facts to add on.

    This conversation presentation demonstrates communication skills. I participated in planning this out with my partner. I showed that “I can work with others to achieve goals”, by listening and understanding the other person before giving my thoughts and contributing. This teamwork helped us finish this script to complete this in time. I show others that I truly value their contributions by actively paying attention and asking for their thoughts and opinions. If there were any confusions, we made sure to talk it out to insure the correct form or word chosen.

    My Grade 9 Year

    Grade 9 was a big change and terrifying moment at the start of the year. There’s way more people around and new classes. High school is a lot more different. There’s different classes you need to get to for every subject unlike middle school where you mostly say in one class of the whole year. I had to meet new people and make new friends. But high school wasn’t all bad, because I had a bunch of new learning experiences through different teachers and people. I’ve met such nice friends during this time. So far, I have been enjoying high school very much, and am excited for the new year to come with new people and experiences.

    For my useful website, I chose Grammarly. For me, Grammarly has been a wonderful tool. It has saved me multiple times with correcting and checking over my writing. It truly saves a lot of time with my assignments, and is my go-to for grammar correction. Overall, this site is a life saver, and I hope to continually use it to the best of my abilities.

    I chose this for my educational video, because I think it brings a very interesting topic of cells into a fun, short, and easy to understand video for kids. It helped me understand the mitosis of cells a lot, and I referenced it very much during my time in science. It is a very helpful video that breaks down a complicated topic into a short animatic for very nice visuals. I very much enjoyed this video and it helped me get through my mitosis stage a lot.

    I chose this image because this image represents my progress in my microscope science project. If we look at the cell in the picture, we could see every little bit of it. I was amazed when I first saw this, as seeing an organism so clearly was fascinating. This assignment was very fun in general, as we saw multiple organisms in this lab. Seeing everything with my own two eyes was a very fun experience, and I hope to do one again.

    Plot, Character, Setting and Mood

    ยท How did you choose the plot points?

    I chose the plot points by taking the parts that I felt most feelings in the story. I put myself in the audiences perspective and see what would be the best point to put in.

    ยท Explain how you figured out the setting in your story. Why is the setting significant to the story?

    I found out the setting to be the palace because all the time and main points of the story happen there. The setting is significant to the story because it shows the great amount of wealth and status the royal family.

    ยท Explain what the word mood means and how/why you picked the song that you picked?

    The word “mood” means the atmosphere and feeling of the room. I picked that song because it best represented the soothing vibes of this novel that contains some romance.

    Competency Reflection

    This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences… by trying to think of what would best represent the emotions and impact of my pictures/words.

    When I need to boost my mood or re-focus… I look towards taking a small break. I think that being in a good mood while working is the best way to work efficiently.

    I appreciate feedback on… my writing skills and prefer it comes in the form… of examples of what to do.

    Core Competency: Communication Skills

    This semester in food studies, I’ve learnt a lot of recipes I never thought I’d make. I enjoyed lot of dishes I made. I used my communication skills to communicate with the groups I have sat with during this semester. Communication is important when it comes to cooking, you have to talk with your partner to decide your job for that lab. You also have to make sure with your group or partner, that no one has missed any steps. You can also ask other people for help if needed. Communicating can also help you meet new people and new friends. Introducing yourself and finding commons with others. This will make your time in the class way more fun and exciting. Its also important to be positive and to have a good attitude towards people for people to like you. I had a great time being in this class and would definitely pick this course again for 10th grade.

    This semester I had a hard time in math. For many years, math has been my worst subject. I had a hard time focusing and understanding the different things we had learnt. I am looking forward to studying and learning more for math 10, and improving and being the best I can in math. Something that has helped me throughout this course is reviewing my notes. Reviewing my notes has helped me memorize the things we have learnt in math.

    Core Competency: Creative Thinking

    In art 9 this semester, I did variety of different artwork like paintings, clay sculpture and cardboard sculpture. For my paintings, we had to do 10 paintings with different schemes which I spent lots of time trying to make it fit the criteria. Picking ideas off pinterest and google was really fun since I found lots of ideas I liked and went creative with. The clay sculpture took me a long time since it was harder to work with. I had to made all parts of a human. Attaching all body parts was really hard but after a while of sculpting it turned out pretty good.

    Snickerdoodle cookies

    Making and Sharing Reflection

    I had to identify and use an appropriate equipment that was right for this recipe. When making cookies, you would need to use an electric mixer, spatula for scraping the batter off the sides, custard cup to put all the small ingredients in and small measurements for equipment. The ingredients me and my partner would get and use to make the snickerdoodle cookies is butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. This also was a roll cookie method.

    When I make baked goods with my partners we would share the food depending on how many people there is. Like sometimes it would be 3 people cooking/baking together, so we would divide it in threes. Most of the time I would share it with my friend, since it’d be hard to bring home. But sometimes I would try to save it, give it to my mom to try. These are usually foods we bake. They usually really like it and would ask for more.

    Core Competency Reflection

    If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to discuss what we don’t agree on. Trying to brainstorm ideas of what could work. We could also explain the reasons on why we choose or thought of that idea because someone could change their opinion and start agreeing with someone.

    When I need to work collaboratively with people I donโ€™t know well, I would introduce myself first. Getting to know each other is also something what I would do with new people I meet. I would also listen to them talk respectfully.

    “While working in the kitchen, I help to build and extend understanding byโ€ฆ” I want to work on this goal to build my understanding on doing everything by myself. Being independent and using my knowledge to complete tasks.
