My First Year

My Grade 9 Year

During my first year at centennial I have done lot of exciting things this year. But the thing that has stood out for me this year would have to be science honors. During these two semester, I have done a lot of exciting lab work with friends and peers. Its been a challenging class but, It has been very rewarding. I’ve also had lots of fun during power tech problem solving during my projects and competing against friends to see who did better in the competition we had.

A Useful Educational Website

https://phet.colorado.edu/

I chose this educational website because it helped me understand the ideas and concepts of the three subjects in science, Physics, chemistry and biology. This has helped me better visualize the affects and changes that happens in interactions and reactions. It has made me look forward to learning using helpful fun science websites.

A Useful Educational Video

We used this educational video in the first semester when starting to learn about biology. I find this video to be a good introduction to mitosis, because it has a easy to follow visual and wording easy to follow for people just learning about mitosis.

A Useful Educational Image

This image helped me in socials when learning about the French Revolution. It helped me understand the estates and how the third estates held all the responsibilities of the two other estates. Like paying for taxes, doing all the farming and being treated poorly despite of what they were doing.

An Inspirational Quote

If you want something done right, do it yourself.

-Charles-Guillaume Étienne

I picked this quote because it stuck out to me and my values. I believe that if you want to do something your way, you have to do it. That is why I prefer to do single work rather than group work, because sometimes I disagree the way the person wants to do it and is very adamant about it.

ADL Social Studies-Ethical Judgement

Is violence justified during a revolution or protest?

How did the use of AI assist you in developing this project?

AI helped during the development of this project by helping me get ideas to add onto my argument and examples i could use that supports my argument. It also helped me get ideas for all my argument and starting them.

How did you ensure that the work you created was still your own, rather than just a product of the AI

I ensured that my work was still my own and not AI by implementing my ideas and the AI’s ideas. I also altered the AI’s ideas and worded how I would say it.

Did you agree with the position you had to argue? Why or why not?

I do agree with my position in the argument because i truly believe that there are better way to solve things rather than going straight to violence. As like i said in my rebuttal violence always only leads to more problems and getting yourself in more trouble.

 Core Competency Reflection

I am clear on the difference between simple “group work” and collaboration as evidenced by

My evidence on knowing the difference between group work and collaboration is my partner and I split the work evenly and helped each other with each others arguments and rebuttal. But we both knew that we had to do our work evenly so its not one sided, where someone wasn’t doing more than the other.

One of the ways I ensure my group is clear on the common purpose is to

One way I ensure my partner is clear on the goal is to communicate when the things need to be done and what they need to do to be successful in the partnership.

Plot Character, Setting and Mood

Figuring out what my protagonists looked like in the story was quite difficult because the descriptions were quite vague. But through various quotes in the book, I made an educated guess on what the protagonists looked like.

I chose my plot points by bookmarking any event in the book and comparing them when I finished the book. I reflected on how major the event was and how important it was to the story and made a organizing sheet for the ones I chose.

I chose the settings by seeing how much time they spent in that area and how much conflict went on in that setting, for me it was London 2026-27. The setting is significant because it helps the reader understand all of the futuristic aspects of that time and what can happen to the world in a couple of years.

· Explain what the word mood means and how/why you picked the song that you picked?

Mood – a temporary state of mind or feeling that a reading can feel while reading a book. The song I picked helps visual the intensity of the situations and conflicts in the story.

Core Competency Reflection

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I make sure to finish a certain amount of work or reading then rest to stay motivated and do more my next work session. I find if I don’t do this my work starts to lack quality and I procrastinate for longer periods of time.

This is how I select images and words to create impact for different audiences, I specifically chose my images to help my audience imagine the events more clears. I find that a good image helps me imagine the situation a lot better and most likely goes for others.

I appreciate feedback on… and prefer it comes in the form of…, For me, I like feedback in the form of constructive criticism as it helps me work on my weak points and helps me become a better writer

Self Assessment

Golf tower Ball Launcher

Curricular Response:

After each lab, my understanding of the scientific method has improved greatly because after my first experiment (golf tower), I learned two things through testing and seeing. The first being in the testing phase, always seek out the flaws. In the golf tower challenge my partner and I encountered our tower sections were uneven. which made it lean and the golf ball just falling through the tower. The second being never get lazy with your design. This is because we got lazy in some parts of our design which made our tower have0 flaws in the part we got lazy on.

With my second experiment (ball launcher) I applied these things I learned from my last experiment. Although it wasn’t perfect and still had flaws, my group and I fixed majority of the issues to where we had good results. Our main issues being not being able to aim where the ball went and the consistency of the distance it went.

Core Competency Self Assessment and Creative Thinking

Why is it Important to Celebrate our accomplishments:

I believe its important to celebrate our accomplishments because it build confidence in yourself and classmates and pushes you to reach for a bigger goal next time. The Lab I’m most proud of is the ball launcher because my teammates and I had a better understanding of what to look for and do, which made us confident in our design.

What Strategies did you use to Overcome those Challenges:

Some strategies I used to overcome those challenges were using inductive learning to seek out the flaws of our design. Then used deductive learning to see if our solutions to our flaws worked. Another strategy my group used is brainstorming new ideas if our original planned wouldn’t work.

Describe your experience with understanding of the Scientific Method doing the 2 labs?:

my experience with the scientific method through labs bettered my understanding, through talking with classmates and teammates about our designs and hypothesis. This has helped me a lot with remembering each step and my general understanding of the scientific method

Tell me how you did the following:

A) I demonstrated that I can create new things when I my teammates during both labs were stuck on a issue and brainstormed new ideas and combined our ideas with classmates designs. for example, on our ball launcher we were stuck on how to plant the launcher onto the cardboard, so we took a look around the class and inspired our tape design off another groups.

B) I demonstrated that I can build on the ideas of others when my friend and I were doing the golf tower challenge. We both had different ideas on how to make it as tall as possible. But with lots of brainstorming and final tweaks, we came up with our design.

C) When trying new things, I expect setbacks and failure and use them to develop my ideas. An example of this from the Scientific Method labs would be when we did our golf tower. We expected setbacks because of the inconsistency of the tubes building up and the base leaning one way a bit more. But we resolved this problem by leaning the tower the other way to act as a counter balance. For the inconsistent tubes we just rerolled them until it was stable enough to gold the golf ball.
